Course Update
Progress continues behind the scenes on the next phase of Course improvement works, with plans for the remedial mounding on the 16th hole now well advanced. Subject to final Board approval, work is expected to commence in the coming weeks, to align with the final works required for completing the Boardwalk project at the 17th tee.

This stage will focus on reshaping and improving turf and soil conditions across the southern side of the 16th fairway, while also reusing material to enhance the flyover area between the 14th tee and fairway. Timing aligns with the peak growing season, ensuring strong turf establishment and managing disruption to play.

The Boardwalk project itself is now approaching completion, then remedial work to reinstate the crossing at holes 1, 2 &3 will be carried out.

Club Championships:

Sunday, 2nd November marked the finals of the Club Championships. The weather was perfect, with little wind, and the course and greens were in outstanding condition thanks to Kurt and his team’s excellent preparation. Their efforts helped make the day even more enjoyable, and all matches were played in great spirit.

The Men’s Championship final between Lennox Cleary and Ryan Farrell was a gripping encounter, with both players displaying exceptional skill over the first 18 holes. Ultimately, Ryan’s steady play proved decisive, as he secured victory on the 32nd hole with a 5 and 4 win. Congratulations to Ryan on becoming the 2025 Men’s Club Champion.

The A Reserve Championship saw Paul Bowler take on Michael Cooper in a match played in great spirit. Paul’s early dominance set the tone, as he held his lead through the opening 18 holes and continued his steady play into the afternoon. His consistency proved decisive, claiming a 6 and 4 win on the 32nd hole. Congratulations to Paul on a strong and well-earned victory.

B Grade

The B Grade final was contested between Mark Gilligan and Tim Mayoh. It was a closely fought match that see-sawed throughout the first 18 holes. However, Mark capitalised on his opportunities and maintained his focus to close out the match on the 33rd hole with a 4 and 3 victory. Congratulations to Mark on a well-earned win.

C Grade

The C Grade final was played between Jeremy Gruzman and Benjamin Varvaressos. It was a fiercely contested match with both players refusing to give an inch throughout the day. Momentum swung back and forth, but in the end, the match went down to the wire, with Benjamin emerging victorious, 1 up on the 36th hole. Congratulations Benjamin.

Encourage Shield Round 4 saw the Long Reef team travel to Northbridge to take on the home team. Every game went at least to the 15th hole, with one battle stretching to the 18th resulting in a 2-4 loss. The contest was close throughout, with little separating the sides. Thomas McConochie was in fine form, sitting three over through nine, while Jasper Lee pumped a 240-metre drive to set up a brilliant birdie, and Angus Mayoh drained a 30-foot putt for another birdie.

In true Long Reef spirit, the players were humble in defeat, sharing laughs, hot chips and pink lemonades with the Northbridge team after the match. The group continues to grow closer each week and they look forward to the final round at Bayview Sunday 9th.

Encourage Shield Round 5 - The final round was hosted by Bayview, where Long Reef faced Cromer in cool and windy conditions. The matches were tight all day, with little separating the two teams. Trailing 2–1 with three players still on course, Aiden McConochie held his nerve to clinch a win on the 18th, leaving Thomas McConochie and Angus Mayoh to finish the job both all square with one to play. Thomas sank a miraculous long-range bending birdie putt to win, while Angus completed a stunning comeback, winning after being three down through 14.

A fantastic 4–2 victory to finish the season for the Long Reef team, who finished 2nd in their division.

Question:

Alison was playing a stroke round.

She was hitting off the 12th hole. She was playing from the Teeing Area of that hole'

Her stroke at the ball missed and her ball remained on the tee. She knew that the ball was in play. She glared at the ball. She decided to play from a different spot in the Teeing Area, so she picked up her tee. She looked closely at her ball and decided to change that, so she took a new ball from her bag.

She teed her ball on a different spot in the teeing area.  She hit a good drive.

Counting penalties, how many strokes had Alison played?

   Which is correct?

Arthur Griffith - Griffith Park

The Golf Course now takes its place in Griffith Park along with other sporting clubs and recreational activities. It is named after the Right Honourable Arthur Griffith. His contribution to the Club was acknowledged in 1924 when he was the first of two men to become Life Members that year. During a recent visit to the city of Griffith it was realised that he not only helped to create the space that became the Golf Club but contributed enormously to the development and progress of the State especially in the first three decade of the last century.

During the 1800s the peninsula was used for mixed farming. It was cultivated at the top of the hill with a wetlands below and native scrub and large sand dunes on its road side and coastal boundary. It had remained in the Jenkins family for the greater part the century.

“By the end of the 1890s the owner, Jenkins’ daughter, became something of a recluse. She bequeathed her estate to the Salvation Army, which from her death in 1900, continued to farm until 1912. At that time public resentment at their being denied public access to beachfront areas by the “Army’s” farm fences and a disagreement between the “Army” and Council over rates to be paid led to the Crown resuming the area.”*

It was then named Griffith Park after the Minister for Lands the Hon. Arthur Griffith who was a principal party to the acquisition of the land from the Salvation Army. The area was passed to the shire to act as trustees for the Crown and for them to guarantee purposeful local use. The shire was more than keen on the idea of having a 9-hole golf course when it was requested in 1920.

Arthur Griffith was born in Westmeath Ireland in 1861. His family moved to Sydney when he was ten. He attended Scotch College, and then lectured at the University of Sydney and Melbourne. He was a teacher, a politician and a patent attorney. He set up his own patent business. He joined the new Labour party. He was Secretary for the political party from 1894-1904 and the first seat he won was for Waratah in the legislative assembly in 1894. He remained in the Legislative Assembly until 1917. There is a detailed story on line about why he also later represented Sturt and later still Annandale. He was known as one of Labour’s best speakers, sarcastic and vigorous. He was described as a formidable man.

He became Minister for Public Works in the first Labour Cabinet in 1910, a position he retained until 1915. His influence was extensive and two of many areas of change and progress are mentioned here. In 1911 he became the first chairman of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Trust which led to the development of the food bowl around what was to be known as Griffith. Griffith was proclaimed and named after him in 1916.

In 1913 he had appointed  J.J.C. Bradfield as chief engineer for the metropolitan railway construction. Bradfield’s vision led to the building of the Harbour Bridge.

Arthur had opinions on and fought for hospitals, road and rail development, quarries, engineering works, education opportunities especially in agriculture, the theories behind nationalising food supply, petrol controls, brick and pipe works, and iron and steel works. He promoted the Newcastle Steel works from 1911. He made both friends and enemies during his political life.

Fortunately for us he found time in 1912 to take back the Long Reef Headland from private hands and declare it Crown land.

Arthur died in Jannali in 1946.

Answer: B is correct.

Her first missed stroke  and her stroke from the new place.

There is no penalty for changing her ball or the position of her  ball.

Rule 6.2b sets out in detail the considerations which are in play in a Teeing Area playing a second ball.
