Reef Breezes | Wednesday 24 January 2024

Dear IAN,

From your Board

Below are notes from the Board Meetings held on 5 December 2023 and 11 January 2024 with updates of current works in progress.

Bunker Construction

The final load of sand will be delivered in late January which will finish off the practice green bunker.

The total cost of the project was $641,069 which came in in $23,069 above the budget, however this includes approximately $100,000 of improvements completed outside of the initial scope of works. Areas included the shaping and drainage work between 18th fairway and practice tee, shaping of the rear of the 6th green, turfing and redesign of the approach to the 12th green, as well as increasing the construction zones to remove larger areas of parramatta grass.

The new drainage and Kingstone lining have stood up to the large rainfall over a short period last week, and the bunkers remained playable. We are reaffirmed that the drainage and bunker work done is delivering its intended outcome.

Further refinement of the sand levels and compaction will continue to minimise plugged balls and encourage balls to return to the base on bunkers.

Golf Shop Design

Retail design firm Brand Dimensions have been appointed to complete the internal fit out of the Golf Shop. Working with the management team over the past two months, designs have been presented to the Board and will now go through a tender process for the construction stage.

We look forward to sharing an update on the Golf Shop change over, timeline of works and the new look shop with Members this week.

Clubhouse Master Plan

Following an extensive tendering process, the Board have appointed Luchetti Krelle Architects, www.luchettikrelle.com to lead the master plan design, in partnership with i2C Architecture. Luchetti Krelle is an award-winning Sydney based interior and architectural design practice specialising in hospitality. There work includes some of Sydney's top restaurants, bars and more recently golf clubs.

The appointment is for Luchetti Krelle to be the Design Lead for the project, collaborating closely with key consultants, the Building Committee and Senior Management to create an overall concept masterplan for the Clubhouse Refurbishment up to and including the lodgement of a Development Application.

The Building Committee will be working closely with Luchetti Krelle and i2C over the coming months to develop the concept vision and design with key consultant input, including specialist project management and cost management advisory. We look forward to sharing the initial designs progress with Members shortly and comprehensive details of the masterplan.

Severe Weather - Lightning Policy

Automated lightning detection systems have been installed at the Golf Shop. Controlled through meteorological artificial intelligence, staff are alerted when lightning is detected 20km and 10km from Long Reef Golf Club. At 5km the siren is automatically activated, and all players must evacuate the Course.
The full policy can be viewed here.

Battery Storage Discontinued

Members were alerted in December that the Club will no longer provide battery charging facilities for Members buggies in the Golf Shop storage. This follows several significant fires at Golf Clubs across the country and mounting pressure from Golf Australia and Golf Club insurers.

New Member Induction

17 applicants from the waitlist were offered and accepted Membership commencing under provisional status from 18th January across 5, 6 and 7 Day categories.

We welcome these new Members and hope you have the opportunity to guide them around the Course, showing them it's not just a great Course we have, but also great Members.

Medley Competitions

From the 22nd January, Monday, Saturday and Sunday competitions will be played under a medley format, meaning Women and Men will compete in the same grades for the same prizes. The introduction of the World Handicap System has promoted gender neutral competitions which are rapidly being adopted by Clubs across the country. The Golf Committee are planning a trial of optional tees, allowing Members to select the tees they wish to play from whilst still playing in one competition with the handicap adjusted accordingly. The objective to prolong the playing activity of aging Members and also encourage players to play from the tees suited to their ability.

Competitions will be varied across different tee colours to allow sufficient data for the re-rating of Courses that haven't been played on a competition basis regularly, particularly following the Bunker Master Plan works.  Dates for the trial of optional tees will be confirmed in the coming months.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like clarification or further expansion on any of the items above.

Congratulations to John Briggs who had his first hole in one on Wednesday 17 January on the 2nd hole.

White Tee Comps
Following some feedback from Members concerning competitions from the White tees, it is important to clarify that the white tee competitions are for men only. The women will continue to play from the red tees as usual in all comps.

The purpose of the men's white tee competitions is to gather sufficient data over a period of time to check and recalibrate the men's white tee rating to ensure consistency with the blue tees allowing multiple tee options. Historically there have been few comps played from the men's white tees that are registered with Golflink. Therefore, no recent or reliable data is available. It is important that we have the ratings tested against current competition data especially now that the Bunker Master Plan is complete.

Course

Since the beginning of December the Course has received over 150mm of rain. This has improved the Course significantly and filled the dams to near capacity. Bare patches still remain around the Course, a result of the Black Beetle infestation and the Ground Pearl grub. The Course Superintendent has sprayed the fairways and many areas being damaged by the Black Beetle larvae. Hopefully over the next few weeks, thin areas on the fairways will recover with the eradication of the beetle.

Given the very hot weather this week and no substantial additional rain, preferred lies will remain until the beginning of February.

The Bunker Master plan has been completed with the fairway bunker on the 12th being finished and in-play. The practice green bunker should be operational by the end of the week.

Please be aware, Members have recently spotted a brown snake on the course, last seen near the 13th and 17th tee.

Michael Infanti | Head Teaching Professional

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in Penrith and played most of my Junior and Amateur golf at Penrith Golf Club and Twin Creeks, before completing a Traineeship with the PGA Australia in 2009.

Coming up to 15 years as a golf professional, I have worked in the golf industry all of my life and made the move over to the Northern Beaches 10 years ago and have been working at Long Reef Golf Club for 8 years now. I absolutely love the Membership base here and we are very blessed to have a beautiful Golf Course right on the coast that will challenge your game differently every day depending on which way the wind is blowing.

What are your hobbies or what do you like to do on your days off?

In my spare time I enjoy spending time in the gym or being social catching up with mates and family. Grabbing a coffee with my wife and looking for the best eggs benedict on the beaches (any suggestions would be great) and talking about how I'm going to invent something that is going to make me mega rich with millions and retire early and spend my time playing golf and perfecting my short game. I also enjoy grabbing a beer and watching the mighty Penrith Panthers NRL team dominate Manly and also the Sydney Roosters or anyone else for that matter (sorry).

How long have you worked at LRGC?
I have worked at LRGC for 8 years now, I started working part-time in the Pro Shop then moved into becoming a Full Time Golf Coach. I love mixing my time between the Pro Shop catching up with the Members to spending the rest of my time on the practice facilities helping others with their golf game and trying to make them perform better by trying to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. I love coaching and the problem-solving that comes with it as there are so many different variables in golf and it is the most humbling sport In the world - just when you think you have it worked out, it has a sick sense of humour. Progress over Perfection.

FUN FACT: I've had 3 hole in ones. My first one 14 years old was a thin shot into the lip of a bunker and rolled down into the hole (who says you don't need luck in golf.)

Legends of Long Reef

club image

Kurt Schulenburg is a Legend of Longreef.

Our Assistant Course Superintendent, Kurt has been a leader in the Bunker Master Plan implementation. Working tirelessly with the rest of the Course Team, collectively they have delivered the plan in a massively compressed timeline, whilst continuing to carryout their regular maintenance routine and presenting the Course to a high standard.

Under Course Super, Peter Donkers' leadership, Kurt has stepped up to lead when Pete was unavailable to achieve a fabulous outcome.

Long days, learning new skills and a "can-do" attitude to get it done. The Course Team were enthusiastic when I dropped by the Maintenance Shed to give Kurt his award. Clearly a popular and supported recipient.

Of note is that when I presented Kurt with his $100 recognition award, he immediately said he would use it to buy drinks for the team at the post Bunker Master Plan team party. He said "it was a team effort and my recognition is a reflection of their work". What a humble Long Reef Legend!

Anzac Avenue - What's in a name?

On the 17th February the Club celebrates one of its birthdays! In 1923, with the 9-hole course established, and the brand new owner-built 'Golf House' complete, the date was chosen for the official opening of both the House and Course. At the time the postal address was Anzac Avenue, but this was a very new street name. It has been forgotten that the naming and re-naming of the local streets had a great deal to do with memories of the Great War. Some of the club's first members had only returned to Australia two years before one of the other club birthdays, the 14 May 1921.

club imageclub image

17th February 1923 Long Reef Golf Club is officially opened.

Having recently found an advertisement for a land sale auction held on 'ground' in 1913 it is possible to learn more about the club's immediate environment as part of the Collaroy Basin and the recognition of names from WW1.

club image

Land for sale 1913

As the map shows in 1913 the road we know as Anzac was called Government Road beside the land  "Resumed by Government for Public use" (only a  year before in 1912), where the sports grounds and golf course was yet to be. The rest of the sub-division of over 140 lots had at first been given street names that suited and described the area - Seaview Parade, Beach Road, Cliff Road, Ocean Grove and Collaroy Avenue - and Florence Avenue!

Florence seems the odd one out, but as an educated guess it was probably named after Florence Twight, who with her husband Stan owned the first commercial property in Collaroy -The Twight Tea Rooms. They  later branched out in to all sorts of enterprises later one of which was as Real Estate agents. There is a reserve named after them both above the pool at Collaroy.

The first Anzac Avenue in Randwick 1917

There is a story that after the headland had been used after WW1 as a rest and recreation camp-site the small track leading from Government road up the hill was to be named after one of the bullocky wagon trails used to support the men in the trenches in France, but this is not recorded on any current maps. The first use of the street name Anzac anywhere in Australia was in 1917 in Randwick marking the marches taken by soldiers from the barracks (where NSW Uni. is now) into the city and waiting ships.

There were two other street changes in Collaroy after the WW1. Collaroy Avenue became Brissenden and a new street parallel to it was cut into the "Private Picnic grounds' by the beach to be named Braidwood.

Lieutenant-Colonel Edwin Brissenden, a member of Mosman Rowing Club and Collaroy SLSC, was a lawyer by profession. In 1916 he joined the army at the age 53 saying he was 45. He joined as a Corporal so that he could avoid officer training and go straight to the front. He served with distinction on the Western front but was soon commandeered to Headquarters immediately behind the lines in France as a support staffer selected by Monash. He returned to Australia in July 1919. He was awarded an MBE by the King and a medal from the French government. He would have had many communications with General Braidwood.

British General Sir William Riddell Braidwood was commander-in-chief of the A.& N.Z.A.C. from its arrival in Egypt in 1915. Unlike many British Officer he had the respect of these Australian and New Zealand volunteers. He is credited with using the word 'Anzac' for the first time without capital letters and full stops. It was used as a convenient and required telegraphic code and address when the troops were still in Egypt. He also suggested the same newly created name for the Cove on the Gallipoli peninsula. He then continued as commander as they served in France after the withdrawal.

After the war he visited Australia in 1920 and in his honour a small park by the ocean side of North Narrabeen Bridge near the Surf Club and the street on Collaroy Beach was named after him.

club image

General Braidwood at Anzac Cove

club image

Collaroy Beach and Braidwood Road early 20s.

He also visited Furlough House on Ocean Road in Narrabeen which had been created  in 1918 and thought to be "the first patriotic establishment in Australia offering rest and respite to ex-servicemen and their families in times of worry and strife." (The now red brick version used as a general retirement home is soon to be demolished for development!)

It is fair to assume that Anzac Avenue, Collaroy, had a name change sometime between 1917 and 1920. It is noted with interest that most of the 140 building plots offered for sale were 50 feet by 150 feet. 10% of the cost was required with the balance to be paid over five years in quarterly repayments at 5%. Purchasers had a right to pay off at any time.

The sale poster is now on display in a cabinet outside the office door. The Club's continuing connection with WW1 is on the doorstep.
