Major Pennants

Sunday 11 February the Major Pennant Team played Bonnie Doon at Long Reef for the return match. It was tightly contested with most matches going down to the wire. The team was successful in getting the upper hand, beating Bonnie Doon 4 matches to 3.

The Team played Muirfield Golf Club on Sunday 18th at Long Reef. Another tightly contested match, with the team beating Muirfield 5½ to 1½. Next Sunday 25th is the return match at Muirfield.

Hole in One

Congratulations Chris Mitchell who had his first hole in one on the 13th, Wednesday 14th February.

Great Rounds of Golf

Cam Gillespie and Harry MacKerihan had their best rounds of golf ever on Saturday 17 February. Cam shot a five under par round of 66 for 42 points and Harry had a 2 under par round of 69 for 41 points. Both played well the next day against Muirfield to tie and win their respective matches as part of the Major Pennant Team.

NPICC

Long Reef played Cromer at Mona Vale Golf Club on Thursday 15 February. The team went down to Cromer 6 ½ to 1½. The team needed a win against Manly at home on Monday 19th February to have a chance of making the finals but a sudden storm stopped the matches. A re-match date is still to be set.

Carry a Bucket - Fill a Divot

The course is recovering well from the Black Beetle infestation and very dry December conditions. However, it is important we all try to help the recovery by carrying a bucket of soil and fill divots as we see them. Unfortunately, there are too many unfilled divots on the course. It takes next to no time to mend them if we all make the effort.

From the Course

Rainfall

We have been very lucky with the rainfall over the summer with just enough to keep the course green but in reality, it is quite dry. I recently dug some holes in a few fairways and was surprised after some good consistent rain to find that the moisture had not penetrated into the soil. Rainfall for this year has been January 95.4mm and this month 47.6mm with more predicted this week.

Tee Renovations

We are currently renovating the tees which will be ongoing over the next few weeks. The tees are currently being cut / scalped at a very low height down to 5mm which will help remove a lot of the thatch they will then be cored with hollow tines to aerate the soil followed by a top-dressing of sand. Recovery will take a few weeks as it is quite harsh but it is necessary to provide an improved surface.

Fairways

The fairways over the summer months have been constantly attacked by Black Beetle Larvae which damage the root system of the grass. They have been very difficult to control and we have treated the fairways on numerous occasions during the summer months.

Green Renovations

The Course will be closed on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th March for the biannual green renovations. Over these two days we will be holding a Members Working Bee in a number of garden and overgrown areas of the Course, clearing weeds and branches. If you would like to assist, please meet at the Golf Shop at 7.00am on either Monday or Tuesday with gardening gloves and sun protection. Morning tea will follow in the Clubhouse after the mornings work.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Jim was playing in a stroke round.

On one of the later holes his drive went into a big bush about 100 metres on the side of the fairway. He said "that might be lost so I will play a provisional." He played another ball which went straight down the fairway, almost 200 metres. When they reached the bush, they found the first ball which was unplayable.

Jim said "lucky I played a provisional". He picked up the first ball and played out the hole with the second ball.

Jim acted correctly?

A) True    B) False.

From the Archives | A Trophy History

Most clubs have a competition known as the "Gold Medal" or the medal of all medals trophy! At Long Reef men have the Whytock Cup. (He wished his name pronounced as in Wittock'!) A Scot who came to Manly after the First World War, William Whytock's golf associates in Scotland are legendary names - Tom Morris, J.H.Taylor, Harry Vardon and James Braid were among them. He was Captain of Long Reef from 1924-1928 and was a prolific writer and recognised as a golf authority. To win the Whytock Cup a player must have the best net score in his grade in a Monthly Medal. All qualifiers then play off for the Cup in the July medal round. The Women's Medal Winner's trophy is one of their oldest and was donated by the Club Committee to the Associates in 1929.

The Vince Horan Memorial Trophy and Medal remember one of our most colourful members. Vince was a member during the 70's and 80's. He had a wooden leg due to childhood polio and struggled to get around the course. The members took up a collection and purchased a bike to make his golf more enjoyable, such was his popularity. The bike had a mind of its own and sometimes took off causing at times hilarious drama. The medal is a one off net stroke event played in conjunction with the August Monthly Medal. The Memorial Trophy is played over the year with the best net score in the first Wednesday stableford competition each month qualifying for the play off usually the first Wednesday in October. (Unfortunately at the moment the trophy only has one cut glass on display!)

For some years it lived with Gold member Ron Anthony. Ron was a member for over 60 years. He donated this very expensive trophy back to the club  in 1991.  He had won it in 1959, the inaugural winner when it was known as the Cecil Esdaile Singles knockout Cup.

Another long term member who is remembered with a trophy is Dot Leonard. Dot joined the Club in 1940 but suspended her membership because of the war until 1947. She became a Special Member from 1983 , an Honorary Member in 1988 and completed 50 years of membership. Dot was a winner of the Bronze Premiership in 1951 and 1956 but her ideas were what set her apart - she was intent on improving the standard of play of the Grade and other Representative teams and suggested new competitions. The Dot Leonard Rose Bowl competition is held on a stableford day close to the Club's birthday in May. It is a 9-hole competition open to all female members with 25 or more years of continuous membership.

Scherrie Hughes was a member from 1989 until 2009. She was such a keen golfer, a Pennant player of note and a talented artist and teacher particularly painting on fine china. Her trophy is an example of her work - she also painted another of the Ladies trophies, the Forget-Me-Not trophy. Scherrie was known for her, kindness, generosity, vibrant personality and would be teased about her fondness for playing the pokies! As someone who was the carer of a disabled husband, her visits to the Club were her release. She died suddenly, collapsing at home on a Thursday after a game of golf! The trophy is awarded for the best score in a nominated round usually in May and is open to all female members.

Rules with George | Answer

Answer:  B is correct.

There is no provision in the Rules for a player being permitted to play a Provisional Ball for a ball which might be unplayable. The Definitions provide for playing a provisional ball for a ball which may be :

  • Out of Bounds, or
  • Lost outside a penalty area.

A provisional ball is not the player's ball in play unless it becomes the ball in play under Rule 18.3C.

Because this was a stroke round, Jim did not have a score for that hole and would be disqualified.

Many years ago the RULES of GOLF did make provision for playing a Provisional Ball for one which may be unplayable.
