Reef Breezes | Wednesday 6 March 2024

Dear Kimberley,

From your Board

Below are notes from the Board Meetings held on 29 February 2024.

Golf Shop Update

The Golf Shop construction and retail fit out tenders have been reviewed and the Board have approved the capital expenditure of $399,000 for the retail fit out of the Golf Shop including retail components, Trackman simulator, Food & Beverage display/appliances, office, reception desk, change rooms, outdoor settings and storage.

Over the past three weeks the exterior of the Golf Shop has been painted in partnership with Northern Beaches Council and the practice nets have also been removed. New nets will be installed over the next two weeks, and open for play by the 25 March.

The internal Golf Shop works have commenced this week and the Golf Shop has been relocated to the Caretakers flat.

An update on the Golf Shop was sent to Members on 2 March and can be viewed here.

Currently the expected opening of the new Golf Shop will be in the first week of May.

Optional Tee Competitions

In the February 'From Your Board', Members were advised of the trial of optional tee competitions on Monday and Saturday. The Board have agreed to extend the trial to Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday competitions. The trial commences on 4th March and will be closely monitored by the Golf Committee over the coming months. Its success will be gauged by the uptake over the trial, results and overall Member satisfaction.

This is part of a global movement to leverage the equity of the World Handicapping System for all players of all abilities to tackle the Course in a way best suited to their ability in a fair way.

Proposed 30 Year Lease

The Management continue to receive updates from Northern Beaches Council regarding the status of the proposed 30 year lease. It is currently sitting with Office of Local Government (NSW Government Department) and was expected to be approved in February. The most recent update has indicated approval is likely to be in mid March.

QR Codes for Golf Ball Damage

The Board approved the installation of signage on holes 9, 13 and 16 including a QR Code that when scanned will open an incident register. All players are covered for third party damage from golf balls through an insurance policy held by Golf Australia, however the Club must be able to identify that the damage was the result of a register player on the Course at the time of the incident. If you hit a ball that leaves the boundary of the Course and could have a high likelihood of causing damage to a car, property or individual, please complete the incident form.

The incident form is currently available from Reception until the signs are installed.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like clarification or further expansion on any of the items above.

Major Pennants

The Major Pennant side played Muirfield in a return match at Muirfield on Sunday 25 February. It was always going to be a tough match to win and the home side used their local knowledge to their advantage and beat our team 6 to 1. The team played North Ryde Sunday 3 March at Long Reef and was another thriller that went down to the wire. The team drew with North Ryde 3½ to 3½. This coming Sunday is the return match at North Ryde and will be another tough match for the team away.

NPICC
Long Reef played Bayview at Manly on Monday 26 February and came away with a win 4 to 3½. The team played Wakehurst on Monday 4 March at Bayview and won 4¾ to 2¾.  Thursday 7 March is the rematch against Manly at Long Reef. It is a must win to keep the team's chances alive in making the finals.

Pace of Play

Playing a round of golf at Long Reef usually takes between 3 and half to four hours to play.  However, at times play can be slowed by a lost ball, or how players manage their way around the course. We all have a responsibility to be mindful of the players in front of us and the players behind. The following are ways we can help the game to move and keep the pace of play enjoyable for all:

  • Keep up with the group in front
  • Play ready golf on fairways and greens
  • Strictly 3-minute limit looking for lost balls
  • Once 2 players have putted out they move to the next tee
  • Make sure your buggies or carts are left at the back or to the side of the green for a quick exit.

Tell us about yourself?
I am 21 years old and have grown up on the beaches all my life. I am a keen traveller who lived in Louisiana in the USA for a year when I was 15 on exchange, and following that I have been fortunate enough to keep exploring different parts of the world. I have been to 33 countries, and my goal is to have backpacked all 193 countries by the time I am 40 (wish me luck)!

What are your hobbies or what do you like to do on your days off?
On my days off I usually spend at the beach or up on the Central Coast visiting my family. I also study travel and tourism part-time, and in my spare hours between that and work, I am trying to learn Spanish in preparation for my trip to central and South America next year.

How long have you worked at LRGC?
I started at LRGC in January 2022. I love working here with all the staff who have now become my mates, and of course, chatting to the Members and hearing all of their stories. I have made some of the best memories working here.

From Your Welfare Coordinator

Part of my role as the Welfare Coordinator is to conduct hospital visits or contact our Members after they have had bouts of sickness or are recovering after procedures. Unfortunately, there are many amongst us who due to getting older need to have surgery. Recently being in Arcadia, I found two other Long Reef Members who were also in the same boat as myself. It makes are huge difference to be able to have a coffee with another to break up the day. I would appreciate if any Members know of any one having knees, hips or any other procedures being done that they contact me - 0418118410 or email servicewithservice@yahoo.com.au so that I can arrange a visit or at least a phone call.

On Friday the 5th April we will be holding a charity golf day for Gotcha4Life. This was the charity voted for by our members. For those that are not familiar with Gotch4Life its vision is a suicide-free world, where no one worries alone.

The day will be an 8am shotgun start, $150 a head with the field limited to 120 players. There will be a lunch with guest speakers, auctions and raffles afterwards.

To enter go CLICK HERE

We will also be holding a raffle $10 a ticket to be drawn on the day - the prizes are a framed 2022 Soccer World Cup Jersey signed by the entire Socceroo's Squad, (only 20 in Australia), Mitchell Starc's framed Australian Test Cricket Shirt signed by the team from the 2023 Indian Tour  and a framed 2023 Canterbury Bulldogs Jersey  signed by the squad.

Tickets can be bought at the bar, pro shop and various members.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Tom was playing a stroke round (Stapleford) and had started his round on the first tee. When his group reached the eighth green, Tom noticed that there were several groups waiting to hit off the ninth tee.

To fill in time, Tom thought he may be able to hit some balls at the nets,  since that is a designated practice area.

Which is correct?

A) Tom is able to use any practice facilities on the course so may use the nets while waiting

B) Tom is not permitted to do more than practice putting and chipping on or near the putting green of the hole just completed or any practice green. He is also permitted to practice chipping and putting near the teeing area of the next hole to be played.

From the Archives | What's in a Name

The Alfred P. Lambert Memorial Trophy became in 1991 the Barling Trophy as it is today. Alfred was the Club's first Captain, Hon Sec. Secretary and Life Member. Dudley Barling was a former Australian Amateur Boxing champion. He was a member from 1932 until he retired from golf in 1977. He was the first winner of the A. P. Lambert Trophy and donated the trophy back to the Club in 1991 at which time it was renamed in his honour. He was a decorated Naval Officer during World War II. The trophy is awarded for the best Stableford round on a Sunday usually in April and is open to all playing members male and female with 20 years or more of membership.

club imageclub image

Hugh Brittain-White joined the Club as a cadet and won the Junior Championship in 1976 and 1977. He passed away from Leukemia in 1982. His parents created the trophy to cement his place in the Club's history. The trophy is awarded annually to the Junior Champion and is played over the 2 qualifying rounds of the Club Championship.

club imageclub image

For many years the Cock of the Walk was a big competition. In 2012 it was renamed the Mick Snell Cup, the only trophy named after a still living member. Mick has been a member since 1987 and has spent time on the committee, as a course volunteer and a supporter of all representative teams. He was elected to Life Membership in 2023. The competition runs from March to October and all 7 day playing members male and female are eligible to enter. It is an open event with a blind draw played in a handicap match play knock-out format.

club imageclub image

The newest named trophy available to the ladies is the Lilith Gollan Trophy. This trophy was inaugurated in 2023. Lilith joined the Club in 1971. She began her golf club volunteering career on the Associates Committee in 1982 and served as President (6 years) Captain (2 years) and Barrenjoey Week President (5 years). In 1996 Lilith became a Council Member of NSWLGU and in 2007 was elected as an Honorary Member of the Golf Union. She also served on the Board of the Club and was elected to Life Membership in 2013. The Lilith Gollan trophy is for the best stableford score over holes 1-9 on a nominated day in May and is open to all female members. This old trophy has been rebirthed. It was first presented to Mrs K. Withers when she won the Championships in 1938.

club imageclub image

The final named trophy for the Ladies is the Wiedersehn trophy, also a prize rather than silver wear. Pip Wierdersehn joined Long Reef  in the 70's after retiring from work and quickly became a well- liked member. Her playing career was cut short due to illness and she ceased playing within a year of joining. She gained so much enjoyment from her short time as a member that she decided to donate a perpetual trophy. The trophy is played over the whole season and is awarded to the player with the best 6 net stroke rounds played during the week (Mon to Fri). Unfortunately a photo is not available of her.

There are many ways to get your name into the history books of Long Reef Golf Club - winning one of the trophies that is named after a member is for many of us the easiest way to achieve this aim.

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B) is correct.

Tom would not be permitted to use the nets between the play of holes.

Rule  5.5b

If Tom breached this Rule he would get the general penalty of 2 strokes, applied to the 9th hole.

Rule 5.5C.

Playing a match, the general penalty would be loss of the 9h hole.
