Reef Breezes | Wednesday 20 March 2024

Dear Kimberley,

From your General Manager

Practice Nets

Our team dismantled the practiced nets behind the Golf Shop and within a few days the new concrete slab was laid, following this, our Corporate Partner A&S Synthetic put down synthetic turf on the new slab. Unfortunately, a delay with the chain wire to cover the structure has pushed the completion date to the week following Easter.

Golf Shop

Many of you will have recently visited our cosy temporary shop, which you'll be glad to hear should only be in use for another 5 weeks. I won't delve into the detail on the fit out, as we would like to keep the suspense for the grand opening. Our team are busy working in the background to ensure our new Golf Shop will have an extensive offering for all your golf needs. More details to follow shortly!

Banksias

This week we lost one of our largest Banksia trees. Fortunately, the area is not in play (for most golfers), and the tree will be removed over the next week.

Banksias dying or falling over have become a common occurrence on the Northern Beaches over the past two years. Some have said it was due to the significant wet weather in 2022, and the high winds experienced at Long Reef don't help. Our team continues to plant Banksia in many areas around the Course, particularly in areas to provide further protection to problem areas.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Rodney was playing in a stroke round. His ball was just to the side of the front of a long green. Between his ball and the green was some rough terrain as a result of recent maintenance. He decided that he would like to putt and would like to take the rough area out of play. He decided to declare his ball to be unplayable, with a penalty of one stroke. He thought he would be able to take Lateral Relief and play from on the green.

Which is correct?

A) Rodney may not take relief on the green.

B) Rodney must place his ball on the green within 2 club lengths of its original position, no nearer the hole.

C) Rodney must drop his ball on the green within 2 club lengths of its original position, no nearer the hole.

From the Archives | Terry Mathews and

Roger Ehret Medals

The collection of Club Medals in the Archives is growing thanks to recent donations. The collections shows that for the greatest amount of time in the club’s history men played for a small lapel pin in the shape of our logo. In the 20s and 30s it was a small wooden shield on legs! The women tried several shapes and sizes of medals. The articles were usually made of silver - from a bar brooch to a letter opener! In the 80s the choice was a pin or a spoon - but they were no longer silver!I would like to thank Kerry Ehret and sons Robert and David for donating some of Roger’s medals to add to those items of memorabilia already donated by Roger before he died. Roger was a member for just under forty years and in the 90s especially was quite a golfer and a consistent winner.

club imageclub image

Recently the daughter of Terry Mathews, Jill, helped by member Lyn Parsons, donated medals won by Terry to the Archive collection. The ornate LGU (Ladies Golf Union) silver spoon and LRGC cake forks won sometime in the 60s and 70 are a welcome new addition. They now sit in their own frame.

club imageclub image

Terry was recognized for her Gold membership in 2016 (50 years) having joined the club in August 1963. Terry applied her skillful P.E. teacher hand-eye co-ordination and a definite confidence and competitiveness in all shedid in the games of golf she played. After High school Terry had attended ACPE, the Australian College of P.E., (founded in 1917) when it was still also known as the Sword College.

One of its two founders was Frank Stuart who had taught fencing to members of the Russian and Royal families. It was and is a private institution. A young Terry with foil in hand is easy to picture, someone with excellent deportment and grace. Like many she headed to England in the 50sseeking adventure and she shared stories with me of the absolute culture shock when she was appointment to a teaching position in the post-war east end of London. I can imagine that she would have liked a sabre not her foil in hand to aid with discipline! When Terry joined the Club in 1963, she arrived just in time to meet the outgoing professional of 41 years Frank Eyre and the first female Life Member Annis Soutar who died two years later. Then, Associates (women) were not allowed to wear ‘slacks’ on the course, a rule endorsed by women. At least by 1964 it was official that Associates were allowed to use the Members’ lounge until 3pm on Thursdays and finally Associates were invited to use the bowling green, which had been opened in 1951! Terry experienced so many changes at the Club a club she was totally committed to,

Terry was a good golfer and although she didn’t quite achieve 50 years of continuous golf membership, after she retired from playing she transferred all her energies to her continuing membership of the Bridge Club doing her very best to recruit and teach new players. She was a Grade and then Bronze Pennant team player for years also with success in both A-Grade and Bronze individual competitions - including medals!

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: C) is correct.

Rule 19 applies.

When choosing a drop spot, the Reference Point is the original spot of he ball.

The Relief area must not be nearer the hole than the reference point and may be in any area of the course.

The ball must come to rest in the relief area in the same area of the course that the ball first touched when dropped. If the ball had rolled off the green it would need to be dropped again. Rule 19.2c applies.
