Amendments to By-Laws 20 - 28 (Sub-Committees)

The Board approved the adoption of the following By-Law:

'20.6 Confidentiality All members of each Committee and other invitees present at Committee meetings have a duty to maintain confidentiality concerning all matters discussed or decided at Committee meetings unless expressly approved by the Chairperson of the Committee who prior to giving approval has consulted the Board. This obligation of confidentiality continues indefinitely except for information in the public domain which has been disclosed by or with the approval of the Chairperson of the relevant Committee. It is the fundamental right of every Committee Member to be able to speak openly in committee meetings on issues affecting the relevant delegated duties without having to consider whether their comments would be repeated outside of the meeting to non-Board and Committee Members.'

Other minor amendments were made to By-Laws 20 - 28 and can be viewed here.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like clarification or further expansion on any of the items above.

Volunteer Day

During the Course renovations earlier this month, some very dedicated Members donated their time to come in over the two days to work on the gardens surrounding the Clubhouse, Putting Green and Golf Shop. The results can be seen through the improved Clubhouse entry, landscaped courtyard of the Ocean View Room and tidy up of the Centenary Gardens boarding the Course and Putting Green. Thank you to those who came down and we hope to see more Members join our team of Volunteers who are making a positive impact on the Course every Tuesday morning.

Additional Parking Restrictions on Anzac Avenue

In the past week yellow lines have been painted at Anzac Avenue intersections of Seaview Parade, Beach Road and Cliff Road. These yellow lines indicate 'No Parking' and provide a clearer view of the intersection as cars approach, to improve the safety for pedestrians and other cars. As of today, the parking signs have not yet been updated, but please be aware of these new parking regulations.

Turf trial on 15th and 16th Mounds

As part of our ongoing improvement plan for the mounds across the 14th, 15th and 16th holes, we a conducting a trial on one of the mounds on the right side of the 16th to ascertain if a layer of good quality soil placed over the current soil will improve turf quality. The existing turf has been removed from the first mound on the right side of the 16th hole, and built up with 120mm of a good quality soil mix over the area and returfed. The mound will be monitored to see how the growth and turf quality improves and if the amount of soil is sufficient to counteract the existing poor quality soil underneath. This trial will assist in deciding on the long-term action to improve the playability of these holes.

Women's Charity Day | Thursday 21 March 2024

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to those of you who attended our charity day. We had a great day and it was very successful raising over $25,000 for our charities Burdekin and Brash A-T.  A day like that wouldn't be possible without the tremendous support of our community donating many of our raffle and auction items. I would encourage you to support them in the future. A list of our sponsors is in the locker room.

I would also like to thank our organising committee, Adriana Bowyer, Libby Cleary, Sandra Haberlin and Val Hindmarsh for a wonderful job. Another special thanks to Karen Smith our auctioneer extraordinaire. We are very lucky to have a club that encourages and supports our endeavours.

Women's Grade 2024

Following our exciting win in Division 3 last year, Long Reef was promoted to Division 2 for 2024 and our representative players were Emma Thurlow, Rachel Buxton, Kate Shanks, Peta Bird, Vanessa Murphy, Natalie Driver, Jen Jansson and Jenni Brown. We were up against Pennant Hills, Oatlands, NSW, Bayview, Carnarvon and The Australian.

The season commenced at Long Reef in early February, where we hosted all the teams before launching into our campaign the following week. We had a narrow 3-2 loss to NSW in round 2 followed by a win against Carnarvon 3-2 a week later. In the battle of the Northern Beaches in Round 4, Bayview got us 4-1, then we had back-to-back 3-2 wins against a previously undefeated Pennant Hills side and The Australian who were sitting at the top of the division by the end of round 6.

As so often happens, it all came down to what played out in the final round to determine the winner. We were certainly in the mix as one of five teams within a point of each other and able to take the flag depending on the results in the last round at The Australian. We all played our hearts out against a solid Oatlands side who were too strong for us on the day winning 3-2. That was enough for Oatlands to skip in front of everyone and win the division by half a point!

Special mention must go to Rachel Buxton, who was undefeated over the five matches she played with 4 wins and a square! Also, to Vanessa Murphy who had her first foray into the grade competition this year and was a fabulous addition to the team.

To everyone in the Long Reef team, congratulations on a fantastic grade season! You are all legends, both on and off the course, and have played some incredible golf over the last couple of months. To our wonderful caddies - Mick Snell, Karen Smith, Sue Kruse, Wendy Millson, Wendy Thomas, Pam Burke, Sally Hill and Prue Bardsley - thanks for being such tremendous support as always. You're the BEST!

I am extremely proud of our entire team and thrilled with our performance in Division 2, securing our place there. As we look ahead to 2025, while Oatlands ascends and Carnarvon descends, we face new challenges as Killara and Wakehurst join our division. It's an exciting lineup of clubs to compete against.

Following the discussion you can play 8 holes of match play which will allow you to put into practice what was discussed and to ask any further questions that may arise during the practice session. There is a sheet in the locker room for you to put your name down if you are interested in attending.

Jana Renaud | Duty Manager

Tell us about yourself?
I am Canadian, from Ottawa, Ontario and I have been in Australia for 7 weeks now. I have worked in hospitality for over 15 years, most recently opening and managing restaurants back home. I love talking about anything food and beverage related and am passionate about customer service in all aspects of the hospitality industry. I am fluent in French and despite not having a dominant accent, it’s actually my first language! I look forward to meeting all Long Reef’s Members, if I haven’t already met you, please say hello!

What are your hobbies or what do you like to do on your days off?
You can most likely find me enjoying Australia’s beautiful climate at one of Sydney’s northern beaches. Certainly not missing the snow and negative twenty-degree weather back home just yet.

How long have you worked at LRGC?
Although only a few weeks in now, I have previously lived in Australia in 2008/2009 on a working holiday visa, and worked at Long Reef Golf Club for 6 months during that time. I have now come full circle, returning as Duty Manager and couldn’t be happier about my decision to relocate across the world!

Rules with George | Question

Question : Algernon was playing in a Stroke Round at Long Reef.

He had reached the 18th hole and hit his shot to the green. His ball was just short of the green and to his dismay when he reached it he found that it was just off the green in a sprinkler head. He was relieved to know that he would get relief because that was an Abnormal Course Condition and he would have a free drop.

Which is correct?

A) The Reference Point and the Relief Area must both be off the green in the General Area.

B) The Reference Point and the Relief area must both be on the green.

From Your Welfare Coordinator

Unfortunately, due to the Easter Holidays and upcoming school holidays, the number of confirmed attendees were very low for the Gotcha4Life Charity Golf Day and we have postponed the event.

I would like to thank the Friday Club for their very kind donation of $1,000 to Gotcha4Life. This donation will assist in raising awareness and education around mental health. The money has already been forwarded to Gotcha4Life.

Whilst staying at Arcadia for rehab for my hip replacement, I have run into a number of Long Reef Members, also doing Rehab for knee and hip replacements. To Marg Mullins, Pat Williams, Robyn McCormick, Simon Thorn, Peter Ruthven and Milton Bray a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing you all back on the golf course very soon.

From the Archives - Reciprocal Clubs

Glancing at page 43 of the programme book, a list of our Reciprocal clubs can be found.

RECIPROCITY (n)   1. Reciprocal state or relation 2. reciprocation , mutual exchange 3. That relation or policy in commercial dealings between countries by which corresponding advantages or privileges are granted by each country to citizens of the other. A strange word and a unique concept and one which also applies to relationships between golf clubs.

Most if not all golf clubs have "Reciprocal" arrangements with other clubs in different areas, different states, and even different countries. Golfers, like everyone else, travel - whether for work or pleasure. The long held idea of Reciprocal Rights with other clubs give golf club members somewhere to call home when they are forced or decide to travel or relocate.

Reciprocal Agreements come in many forms. The agreement stipulates conditions agreed to by the clubs. The ultimate level of rights could include the ability to join the Reciprocal club with no joining fee and even jumping the waiting list for membership (if there is one). A Reciprocal member may have full playing and practice rights the same as a regular member. It may only allow the use of practice facilities and the playing of social golf outside of competition times and on certain days.

Such agreements are made between clubs at the Board level and once ratified are reviewed from time to time to see if the relationship is still viable. Long Reef, for example, had a Reciprocal Agreement with Long Island Golf Club in Victoria between 1955 and 2005. This agreement was terminated by Long Island when they checked their records and found that in recent times no one from Long Reef had visited and none of their members had visited Long Reef. Also interesting is the different ways these agreements come about.

The most famous Reciprocal agreement exists between all the clubs that have been bestowed with the title Royal (Melbourne, Sydney, Birkdale etc). These are automatically affiliated with each other no matter where in the world they are located. The advantages of being a member of a Royal Club are the obvious as most offer many sports besides golf, excellent facilities and often accommodation.

Golf course designers sometimes play a part. It appears that in recent times, all courses that have been designed by Greg Norman (in Australia at least) have such agreements. This may be at the suggestion of the designer or simply a desire of the individual clubs to be affiliated.

One of our older Reciprocals that we have the closest relationship with is Goulburn Golf Club. This relationship came about because one of the Goulburn members owned a sports store and two Long Reef members were sporting goods reps. Whenever they were in Goulburn golf would be played. In 1955, 4 Long Reef members were invited to Goulburn and an unofficial match took place resulting in a win to Goulburn and a tradition was born.

club imageclub image

Sometimes a General Manager or Club Professional will move from one club to another and propose to his new home a reciprocal agreement with his old club. This is how our agreement with Portsea Golf Club came about when Anthony Dignan initiated it.

Members of a club may retire from their working lives and move out of the city to enjoy a quieter life style. Just such an occurrence saw us form a relationship with Forster-Tuncurry Golf Club. Alternatively members of a country golf club may come to the city - particularly younger players wishing to further their golf careers and gain experience at a higher level. When Tom Bateman, Dylan Perry, Nathan Waters and Will Barnett arrived at our Club we quickly formed a relationship with their home club, Scone.

The 2015 Pennant team photo below features three of the four 'Scone' Young players. The club really benefitted from this connection with Scone.

Possibly the least interesting way to get a reciprocal club is for a Board to decide that the club does not have enough such agreements. Letters are simply sent out to many clubs seeking interested parties.

How these rights and privileges are accessed by the members and what clubs we have had these agreements with over the years will appear in the next Archive's Article.

Mick Snell | Archives Committee

Rules with George | Answer

Answer:  A is correct.  The Reference Point is the nearest point of complete relief in the general area.

The Relief area measures  one club length from the Reference Point and must be no nearer the hole than the Reference Point

There must be complete relief from all interference by the abnormal course condition. Rule 16.1b applies.
