From the Course

Rainfall since last newsletter has been 204mm and most of this fell on the Friday night (5 April) before the Long Reef Medal. The Course coped amazingly well with the deluge and by Sunday morning carts were back out on the Course. Drainage work over many years and the reshaping and drainage during the recent Bunker Master Plan has made a huge difference in getting water moved off the Course during these types of events.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Lawrence was playing the 13th hole in a stroke round. He hit his drive from the teeing area high and short and it ended in some heavy growth near the bubbler. He said " I may not find that ball, I'll play a provisional".

He played his provisional, which landed on the green quite close to the hole. He said, " no need to look for the first one". However, as the group walked off the teeing area towards the hole, one of the group saw a ball in a very big bush. He checked the ball and said it was his first ball.

Which is correct?

A. Lawrence will continue to play his provisional ball on the green.

B. He must play his original ball removing the provisional ball which he played.

C. Lawrence realized that he may not be able to easily play his original ball, without declaring it unplayable under Rule 19.2c, dropping it laterally several times with a one stroke penalty each time.

D. He should pick up his original ball and return to the tee taking stroke and distance penalty of one stroke. He did this and his ball ended on the green.

From the Archives - Reciprocal Clubs Part 2

club image

Over the years we have had 18 Reciprocal Clubs that can be verified. The clubs are listed each year in the Programme Book. How members avail themselves of the rights and privileges of Reciprocal Clubs is also set out in the member's Programme Book and has changed very little over the years. In the earliest copy of the Programme Book that I was able to find it states "Members desirous of availing themselves of these privileges should obtain a Card of Introduction from the Secretary" - it is interesting to note that in 1972 we had only 4 Reciprocal Agreements in place. In 2023 the procedure is stated as "Members wishing to avail themselves of these privileges should obtain a Letter of Introduction from the Golf and Corporate Manager." In 2023-24 we have 13 agreements in place, Blackwood Golf Club being erroneously omitted from the list.

Clubs have come and gone. One of our earliest Reciprocals was Flinders Golf Club - their intention to form such an agreement is recorded in Board Minutes in 1938. Flinders is on the south coast of the Mornington Peninsula. Originally settled as a Cable Station there were 4 holes carved out of the bush by the locals as early as 1869.

The club was founded in 1906 and boasts 1 hole designed by the legendary Alister MacKenzie (pictured right) during his Australian tour in 1926. The agreement remained in place until 1951. If you have been lucky enough to play this course the rugged coastline and challenging layout will remain in your memory forever.

In South Australia, we were Reciprocal with Glenelg Golf Club from 1981 - 2004. It is south of Adelaide and regularly features in the top 40 golf courses in Australia. It was opened by the Governor of South Australia in 1927. Smart thinking by committees has located 2 bores on the property ensuring an endless supply of good quality water. Due to the building of Adelaide Airport it was redesigned in 1947 and updated in 1998 by Neil Compton and Bob Tuohy.

Shortly after losing Flinders we had an agreement struck with Long Island Golf Club in Frankston, Victoria. Long Island is a true sand belt course opened in 1938 and designed by Gordon Oliver. The agreement was terminated in 2005 due to lack of use by either club. This turned out to be a real lost opportunity for our members - in 2014 Long Island was affiliated with the National!

club imageclub image

Other clubs that we have lost over the years include Scone Golf Club (above right and Peregian Springs in Queensland. Scone is in the Upper Hunter region located at White Park. Formed before World War 1 the club closed in 1941 due to the Second War and reopened in 1946. The original 9 holes had alternate tees added in the 1970s. In 2015 the golf club amalgamated with Scone R.S.L. due to the construction of the Scone By-Pass the course was re-built in 2019 with 9 holes and alternate tees for the back 9.

Peregian Springs had an agreement with us in 2016 but it appears to have only lasted one year. It is on the Sunshine Coast between Coolum and Noosa and is open to the public 7 days a week.

Next issue we will look at our current Reciprocal Clubs.

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: D is correct

Because his ball was not lost or out of bounds, his provisional ball could not become the ball in play. His original ball remains his ball in play and he must continue to play this under the rules till he holes out.

It was likely that because of the heavy growth where the ball first lay. He would have difficulty gaining adequate relief even with multiple drops. He needed to find the best solution when his ball was not lost. Rule 18.3a applies.
