Reef Breezes | Wednesday 1 May 2024

Dear KIM,

From your General Manager

Golf Shop Opening

It's certainly not the weather we wanted when unveiling the new Golf Shop to you this week. However, we have made the call to proceed with Friday's Grand Opening Event. Currently, there are 230 confirmed RSVP's and if the weather is unfavourable, the veranda and Shop won't accommodate everyone, so we have a plan B as a backup if the weather doesn't cooperate. Enjoy a beverage or two whilst checking out the new Golf Shop, then head over to the Clubhouse for $19 Steak Night. We have ensured there will be plenty of tables for Members in the Clubhouse.

Members Subscriptions

The 2024/25 Member Subscription invoices were emailed to Members on 9 April and fall due on 31 May. If you haven't received your invoice, please contact Kimberley at membership@lrgc.com.au

A reminder that Full Playing Members who pay their subscriptions in full prior to 31 May, will receive 3 complimentary guests passes valid Monday to Friday during the new Membership year.

House, Prize and Voucher Accounts

The validity of Member's House, Prize and Ball Accounts have been extended until the 30 June 2024, due to the Golf Shop only re-opening this week. Any prizes and balls won prior to 1 May 2024, must be redeemed prior to 30 June and all accounts can be used across the Bar, Café and Golf Shop. For every $150 spent in the Golf Shop during May, this will get you 1 entry into the draw to win the Callaway/Oatley prize pack.

Smoking on the Golf Course

Please note that smoking or vaping is not permitted at or around the Golf Shop including the Veranda and Putting Green. In addition to this, we request that if you are smoking or vaping on the Golf Course, be mindful of your playing partners and other golfers and the impact of second hand smoke. Do not smoke or vape on the greens or tee boxes and ensure you remain downwind and a suitable distance from others.

Rules with George | Question

Question:  Timothy was playing a stroke round. Starting play on the 7th hole he played his ball from a point about 3 cm in front of the teeing area. He hit his tee shot onto the green. A fellow member of the group said,

"You played that ball from outside the teeing area". Timothy agreed and said, I think it is a 2 stroke penalty.

Which applies?

A. Timothy's ball is on the green for 3 strokes

B. Timothy must correct his mistake by playing another ball correctly from within the teeing area .

Friday Club

From the Archives - Reciprocal Clubs Part 3

Of our current reciprocal clubs, many have a long history both as their own entity and as a brother club of Long Reef.

Our longest agreement is with the Gailes Golf Club in Queensland. Originally called Goodna Golf Club it was formed in 1924. A geographical change to the railway line saw the name changed to the Gailes Golf Club in 1935. Recorded in our club's Minutes in 1931 is a reference to a reciprocal agreement between Long Reef and Goodna Golf Clubs. The Gailes is celebrating its Centenary this year.

Goulburn Golf Club was highlighted in the previous article and has been a reciprocal club since 1955.

Next in the list of long -time reciprocal clubs is Virginia Golf Club going back to 1956. Virginia was formed in 1928 and boasts an 18 hole Championship course and a 9 hole Heritage course. It is known as "The Club of Champions" having had at one stage 2 exciting juniors in Wayne Grady and Greg Norman. Only 5 Queenslanders have won the Australian Amateur - 2 of them hail from Virginia.

Hartfield Golf Club in Forrestfield Western Australia, joined us in the late 70s. It is a semi-private club open to the public every day except Thursday with an A.C.R of 73 and an A.W.C.R of 75.

An agreement was struck with MacKay Golf club in 1987. Originally a 9-hole course, the club opened in 1925. In 1928 the club moved to its present location due to the construction of MacKay Airport. More land was acquired in 1939 but the second nine was not finished until after World War 2.

The remaining 7 clubs have more recent agreements.

Settler's Run is one that our members should really use. Situated in the rolling hills at Botanic Ridge (Cranbourne, Victoria), it offers a championship golf course designed by Greg Norman but that is just the beginning. Other facilities include an indoor pool, full gym, spa and sauna, day/night tennis courts and a full bar and restaurant.

In Tasmania you will find an excellent course as your home at Kingston Beach. Opened in 1922 Kingston Beach, 15 minutes south of Hobart, it is the southern most 18 hole championship course in Tasmania and has been a reciprocal since 2006.

To the north of Sydney we have agreements with Horizons Golf Club at Salamander Bay. Designed by Ross Watson and Graham Marsh, Horizons is a challenging and peaceful golf course. A little further north you will come to the 36 holes that make up the Forster Tuncurry Golf Club. The older Forster course is close to the ocean and short but demanding. The Tuncurry designed by Nagle/Cooper is a true championship layout.

Portsea Golf Club is a strong Victorian golf course truly open to the elements. The scenery and location make the course a pleasure to play in any conditions. A reciprocal since 2011 it is well worth a visit and can be used as a base for a tour of the beautiful Mornington Peninsula.

Blackwood Golf Club is our only reciprocal in South Australia. Located in the Adelaide Hills, Blackwood was founded in 1930. The club moved to its present location in 1961. In 1986 it became the first South Australian club to admit women as full members and in 2001 allowed to play in the Saturday field.

Our final current reciprocal club is Tocumwal Golf Club. One of the many famed Murray River courses it provides a convenient base for our members to explore this golf rich area.

Tocumwal Golf Resort

Playing different courses is one of the true pleasures of the game of golf. We are lucky to have a wide variety of opportunities to do just that by using the benefits of Reciprocal Agreements.

Mick Snell | Archives Committee

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B. is correct. Timothy gets the general penalty of 2 strokes.

In stroke play the ball played from outside the teeing area is not in play .

The original stroke and any more strokes played before the mistake was corrected ( including any penalty strokes solely from playing the original ball ) do not count.

Timothy must correct his mistake before playing a stroke to begin hole 8. If he does not do this he would be disqualified. Rule 6.1b (2) applies.

We all try to be as far forward in the teeing area as possible and sometimes when the tee markers are widely spaced or badly angled correct teeing is difficult.
