Pennants - Bronze Plaque
Due to the wet weather the Bronze Plaque did not play their first round on Friday 17 May 2024 at Warringah Golf Club against Bayview. The second round was played at Manly against Mona Vale. The team was Jeanette Reitzer, Prue Bardsley, Debbie Hankey, Veronica Bertram and Danielle Seisun with Lisa George and Debra Trim as reserves.

The team had a fabulous 5-0 win. Congratulations, what a wonderful effort!

Foursomes Championships
The Women's Foursomes Championships final round was played on 16 May 2024. The Open Championship final was played over 36 holes, with the B and C Grade Premierships played over 18 holes.

The Open Championships was a real test of golf with the course in fantastic condition given the weather. The golf was just as spectacular with the four women Rachel Buxton, Vanessa Murphy, Kim Sloane and Jen Jansson playing magnificent golf. It was a pleasure to be able to walk around and witness such great golf.  Pars and Birdies were the order of the day with very few holes squared with bogies. However, there had to be a winner on the day with Rachel Buxton and Vanessa Murphy squaring the 34th hole to win the Championships 3 and 2.

Well done to Rachel and Vanessa and to the runners-up Kim and Jen you all played beautiful golf.

The B Grade Premiership was played between Tracey Martin and Robyn Lyon against Marg O'Connell and Aki Lee. Again, a very close game with Tracey and Robyn winning on the 17th hole 2 and 1.

Thank you to Cath Piper for refereeing the match.

Rules with George | Question

Question:  Walter was playing in a stroke round. His ball was in a deep bunker. Before playing his stroke, Walter entered the bunker without a club, dug in with his feet in the sand to simulate playing the ball. He then left the bunker to get a club and when he returned to the bunker he again dug into the sand with his feet and made his stroke.

Which applies?

A. Walter gets the general penalty of 2 strokes.

B. Walter gets a penalty of 1 stroke.

C. Walter gets no penalty.

Long Reef v Goulburn

club image

The annual Long Reef versus Goulburn visit is now in its 71st year, the longest inter club competition in Australia, Goulburn has had a fixed date for our visit there for over 20 years being the Sunday after the Melbourne cup,  we now have a permanent date for their visit here which is the last Sunday in July (28th).

Numbers are increasing again after Covid and Goulburn are sending a team of at least 20 players this year which we must match, so get your name on the sheet. The sheet will be on the notice board on July 1st. The day starts with breakfast to meet the players, golf, then a presentation dinner. The format for golf is two ball best ball.

Competition is open to all male members including 5 day. Any questions text Greg Dousset on 0417 752 696.

From the Archives - Meet the Club Captain

club image

Over the next two issues we will look at the Club Captain Rob Cordaiy and the Women's Captain Sue Kruse. Between them, they have more than one hundred years of golfing experience. Something of a co-incidence - both Rob and Sue were born in Parkes N.S.W! Rob's Gold Membership was acknowledged during the Club's 100th birthday celebration Afternoon Tea in May 2021. Rob is the Club's 29th Captain since 1921.

Rob was born in 1956, the 4th of five children, two brothers and two sisters to Helen and Ray Cordaiy. The family moved to 17 Hay St. Collaroy in 1960. Keen golfers, Helen joined Long Reef Golf Club in 1963 and Ray joined two years later in 1965.Rob remembers in his early days hitting golf balls in Griffith Park and even working on the golf course during holidays and on weekends, earning pocket money raking bunkers and watering greens. He attended Narrabeen Boys High School, a school that produced other long time members, Eric Tazelaar (Gold member) and Les Browne (Gold and Life member) among them.

Both of Rob's parents were prominent in the Club in the 70s. Helen served as a general committee volunteer before becoming Women's President from 1971 to 1974. Ray served for  8 consecutive years. He was in a general position for two years then stood as Vice-President from 1971 to 1974. In 1973 Ray was the first to hold this positions alone.( From 1934 to 1973 the club had three Vice-Presidents.) Ray was Club President from 1975 to 1977. Helen still lives in Collaroy and has just celebrated her 100th Birthday.'

Executive Members of the Committees of the 70s, 80s and 90s.

club imageclub image

It may be fair to say that the Club Committee had quite a trying time in the 70s. The membership numbers may have reached their largest to that date with over 700, but there were financial problems, and drainage and water issues. The well had to be filled in because of salinity build up. There was a new Greenkeepers shed, but then later a fire in the freshly renovated kitchen. Meanwhile the Associates were having a golden time. The Relationship  and communication with the Club(Men) Committee had improved. More access by females was allowed in the Club House, Dress regulations were relaxed and trousers were worn for the first time both on the course and in the Club House. The Associates Grade team managed its second win in four years. On the other two occasions they were runners-up.

This was Rob's first decade of membership. He joined the Club in 1971 as a Cadet Member at the age of 14. At the time the Club's rules would not accept Junior Members until the age of 16. The Club changed the entry requirements to allow Cadet Membership at 14 years of age in 1971. Rob progressed to full membership and around 1990/91, due to family and work commitments, he transferred to House membership. He returned to full playing membership in 2008 .

Rob worked as a teacher, first in Darwin, before accepting a transfer to Western Sydney in 1981 to St Marys where he met his wife Sonya who was also teaching at the same school. He then took promotion positions within the Department of Education and Training, managing the Department's state testing programs.

Over his playing career he has represented the Club in the Junior Pennant, Major Pennant and Masters Pennant teams and is now a member of the successful Northern Peninsula Interclub Challenge Cup team. His lowest handicap, so far, has been 2 and he has won the Hudson Shield, the Founders Cup and just last year won the Mixed Foursomes Cup with Sonya. Sonya joined the club only two years ago having progressed through the Rookies programme and is currently serving on the Barrenjoey Week of Golf Committee.

club imageclub image

Rob retired in 2016 and immediately joined the Centenary Committee making a strong contribution to the Club's 100 Year celebrations. He joined the Board as a Director in 2020 and in October 2023 was elected Captain. Rob's aim as Captain is to promote Long Reef Golf Club as the best playing course and club on the Peninsula for Members and visitors. He is enjoying the challenges of being Captain and would like to continue on the Board, serving the Club and Membership. Rob has demonstrated to the members that he is very capable of fulfilling that aim.
