Reef Breezes | Wednesday 12 June 2024

Dear Kimberley,

From your Board

Below are notes from the Board Meetings held on 30 May 2024.

30 Year Lease

Approval of the 30 year lease was received in early May from the Office of Local Government and the next steps is Northern Beaches Council working with the Club on the details of the lease arrangements and undertaking a market valuation of the Course and Clubhouse to determine the rental rate.

The process is expected to take a few months and Members will be updated as further progress is made.

John Mullins OAM - Distinguished Service Recognition

John Mullins joined the Club in 1991 and held the positions of President, Vice President and Director of the Club until his passing in 2015. John received an OAM in 2013 after becoming a Life Member of Long Reef in 2004. His contribution to Long Reef during this time was immeasurable.

Nominations are now opened for the John Mullins OAM Distinguished Service Award, recognising Members who have provided dedicated service to the Club over several years in a voluntary role.

Members may submit a nomination in writing to the Board of Directors by the 23 August based on the following criteria; John Mullins OAM Distinguished Service Award

Boat Ramp Parking and Wash Down Bay

Northern Beaches Council are proposing changes to two of the four car parks on the southern side of the headland road opposite the boat ramp. The proposed changes will remove two car spaces and re-install a second boat washdown bay. These four car parks were only installed in the past 12 months, however the Council and Fishing Club have determined the requirement for additional space for the boat wash down bay.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Jack and Jim were playing in a Stableford competition. On the 9th green, Jack had putted and  scored 5. Jim putted for 5 and his ball "stopped" on the edge of the hole partly hanging over the hole. Jim walked quickly to the hole and waited to see if the ball would drop into the cup. He started to count the seconds aloud. When he reached 6 seconds, Jack said to him, "ball has stopped moving". Jack lifted Jim's ball and passed it to him.

Which applies?

A) Jack scored 5, Jim scored 6

B) Jack scored 5, Jim must replace his ball and putt for 6

C) Jack scored 5, Jim must replace his ball and putt for 6

D) Both players are disqualified

From the Cafe and Bar

After selling out both our Wine Dinners last year we're back - this time with Mitolo Wines!

The essence of Mitolo Wines can be traced back centuries through generations of agriculturists and viticulturalists. Hailing from Italy's Abruzzo region, the Mitolo family migrated to Australia in the 1950s with a hardworking ethos and a strong connection to the land. Embodying the motto of Abruzzo - forte e gentile or strong and gentle - Mitolo's proud Italian-Australian heritage is engrained in its endeavour to craft remarkable wines of character and elegance.

In 2000, Mitolo made its first Shiraz, and two years later its first Cabernet Sauvignon. Since that time, Mitolo has championed these two varieties with fruit from some of McLaren Vale's most exceptional vineyards. Whilst building its reputation for premium Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon offerings, the range expanded to include several Italian varieties paying homage to the family's roots.

On the evening we will be joined by special guest speaker, Mitolo Winemaker, Luke Mallaby.

From the Archives -  Meet the Women's Captain

Sue Kruse - Women's Captain

In the last issue we looked at the 53 years of membership of Club Captain Rob Cordaiy. This time it is Sue Kruse's story. We will see that Sue has been a golfing member of several clubs from Canberra to Sydney to Queensland across the Pacific and back again  - a journey of  over 50 years in which she has met a who's-who of amateur and professional golfers, and in her working life bureaucrats and politicians. With the demands of a young family, there were breaks in her playing years. Her love for the game has never faltered and she brings vast knowledge and experience of golf and a mastery of administration to her role as Captain.

As mentioned in Rob's story coincidentally both Rob and Sue were born in Parkes! Sue joined Long Reef late in 2021 and became Vice Captain in 2022 and since October 2023 has been Women's Captain.

club image

When Sue Ryan was ten her parents moved from Parkes to Canberra. Her parents were golfers at Royal Canberra and encouraged her to take up the game at the age of sixteen, but there was another representative sport before that. Sue was a champion swimmer winning three NSW State breast stroke titles and representing the state at the National Titles from 1965-67. Soon after the trials for the Montreal Games a move to golf was considered and encouraged especially by her mother.

The dilemma even reached the local Canberra newspaper! (see below). To train for swimming in Canberra was difficult even though she was with coach Terry Gathercole but prolonged periods were expected in Sydney. In 1968 at the age of sixteen Sue joined Royal Canberra Golf Club as a Junior. Commencing with three months intensive coaching and practice with the club Pro Ray Thomas, she developed the game that has stood her in good stead ever since. She was in the motivating company of Ray's wife Diana and Jan Stephenson who of course both went on to compete internationally.
club image
She was soon part of the NSW Junior State squad from 1969-70 with the likes of Vicki Jellis and Sylvia Donahue. (See photo below.) There were  many Junior Competitions and Mixed Foursomes partners, some of them the young men featured on our Long Reef Medal Honour Board.

Sue completed high school at Narrabundah High School where she was School Captain. She then worked as a swimming Coach at Deakin Pool. At the age of twenty she married leading amateur golfer Paul Jones a member of St Michaels and moved to Sydney. In fact in 1973 Paul Jones held the LRGC course record, with a score of 68 having won the Medal that year. (see honour board.) In 1970 The Australian Golf Club invited Sue Jones to play Grade at their club. Sue was also a member of St. Michaels Golf Club. She says she remembers fondly the company of the golfing priests! By this time Paul and Sue had started their family. She remained a member of both clubs until the move to the Northern Beaches.

In 1977 with an invitation from Cromer for Paul to play for them and a house move across the harbour they were both to become members of Cromer until 1989. This was the fourth Club at which Sue had played in a Grade Team. In 1989 they moved to live on the course at Sanctuary Cove in Queensland. This resort had a different style of management as it was at that stage owned by a developer but they used an Advisory Committee to run Women's Golf of which Sue was a member. Sanctuary Cove is where their son got to play with the likes of Ian Baker-Finch and Wayne Grady.

Sue and Paul's marriage ended in the early 90s and Sue gave up golf for a while, but from 1996 with new partner Max Kruse, who worked for Qantas, new golf courses were added to the list a little further away! They first moved to Thailand where she played at the Royal Bangkok Sports Golf Club. Then the move was to New Zealand for two years playing at the Grange Club in Auckland. In 1998-2000 Fiji was home. Playing at the Denarau Course Sue won the Club Championship and played in the Fiji Open. By this time her handicap was back to 5. Sue came back to Queensland by herself and worked for the Department of Education, Training and Industrial relations for a year before moving back to Canberra in 2001. In Canberra she had family, two sisters, a brother and her Mum.

First Murrumbidgee Club was joined but then Sue went back to The Royal Canberra Golf  Club in 2009 staying until her retirement in 2018.

Sue worked in the Public Service as well as completing her Masters of Management Degree at ANU. She worked for Ian MacFarlane in 2006, (in the Howard years) and Brendon O'Connor 2007 (in the Rudd years). From 2017-2018 she worked as Senior Policy Advisor to Cabinet in the Prime Minister's Office for Malcolm Turnbull and then as his Cabinet Secretary. She continued as Cabinet Secretary for Scott Morrison, retiring after four months in that position.

Working in the Public Service led to all sorts of travelling and golfing opportunities. For example Sue and her team went to East Timor to support the country in developing an Authority to regulate their own Oil and Gas. There was also a trip to the Solomon Islands on an official visits with memories of playing up and down the fairways of a course that had been built on the old runways of a WW11 airport.

In 2019 Sue sold her house in Canberra and moved back to Sydney. She joined Cromer again but it wasn't what she expected and hoped for. She left in 2021 to join Long Reef where she is very happy. This is her first time as a Club Captain. She was a member of the Long Reef winning Grade team in 2023, making this the fifth club that Sue has represented at this level.

club image

(Left: Late 60s photograph taken from the NSW LGU 100 year booklet, published in 2003)

When asked about the most significant changes she has seen over the golfing years Sue mentioned the changes of membership from Associates to Full Members and the options that the various coloured tees gives all players.

She is an enthusiastic supporter of the world wide slope handicap system. Sue thinks that the changes to equipment has also been a huge area of change.

She started with small headed woods and hand forged and stamped irons. The balls were a different size too. Her hope for Long Reef is to encourage more young women to play golf and for all members to understand and play all types of competitions. It is also hoped that being at Long Reef Golf Club should be a complete varied experience on the course and in the club house.

She is most proud of her golfing successes including a few years as Mixed Foursomes Champion at St. Michaels and the Club Champion on two occasions, Women's Foursomes and Mixed Foursomes Champion at Sanctuary Cove. The fondest of memories is winning the Mixed Foursomes with her son at Sanctuary Cove Golf Club.  Now there is the pleasure of playing with her grandson at Long Reef.

Now playing on a handicap of 12 Sue hopes to continue competing at the highest level possible that the body will allow! It seems most likely that she can and will bring all her golfing experience and Canberra learnt diplomatic debating skills to the role of Captain!

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: C is correct.

This situation is covered by Rule 13.3b. "What to Do if Ball overhanging the hole is Lifted or Moved Before 10 seconds Waiting Time Has Ended". The ball must be replaced on the lip of the hole. The waiting time under Rule 13.3a no longer applies to the ball.

In Stroke play (stableford) the player who deliberately lifted or moved the ball gets the general penalty (2 strokes). As a result Jack gets a score of 7 with the addition of the 2 stroke penalty to his score of 5. Jim will knock his overhanging ball into the hole for a score of 6.
