Master Pennants

Long Reef played Asquith at home on Sunday 16th June. The team played very well and came away with a resounding victory 7 to 1. The return match was Sunday 23rd June at Asquith. Unfortunately, the team didn't come away with a win, losing 4 to 3. A big thank you to Tony Holley for Captaining the team and the players who represented the Club this season.

Monash won the Division with Long Reef in second place.

 Pace of Play

Everyone wants to enjoy their round of golf and the time taken plays an important part. Currently with shorter daylight hours it is important that Members make every effort to complete their round in the allocated times. The following is a reminder to all Members about the Pace of Play Policy and how to ensure your group keeps up with the group in front.

Pace of Play Policy:

  • The first five (5) groups in each competition must complete their rounds in four (4) hours or less
  • All other groups in the competition must complete their rounds within 15 minutes of the group in front
  • The time determined for your group is the time the last person in your group submits their competition score into the system
  • The Board encourages all members to play "READY GOLF" i.e. you should be READY to play your shot as soon as it is safe to do so, regardless of the honour or whether you are furthest from the hole. It is the responsibility of each group to play within the published maximum times allowed and keep up with the group in front.
  • Even if the reason for your group being out of position is a result of a lost ball, a lengthy search or a ruling, it is still the responsibility of the group to play to scheduled time and be back into position as soon as possible.

From your Welfare Coordinator

It is with great sadness I report the passing of Jenny Loughnan. Jenny joined the Club in 1992 and was elected to the Board in 2003. She served 10 Years on the Board - 7 of those as Vice President. She was the first woman Vice President of the Club and only the third woman elected to the Board. Jenny's contribution to the Club over the years has been invaluable. Jenny was a regular weekend golfer and also represented the Club in the grade team in 2002-04. We extend our deepest sympathy and thoughts to Jenny's sister Kathy and their family during this difficult time.

Her funeral will held at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium, 199 Delhi Road, North Ryde on Wednesday 3rd July at 11am in the South Chapel. This will be followed by a celebration of Jenny's life at LRGC from 12.30pm.

John Davison, Graham Heiser and Gary Milsted are all progressing well after successful hip replacements.

Margaret Mullins is also progressing well and hoping to soon return to golf.

On Friday the 23rd August we will be holding the postponed charity golf day for Gotcha4Life. This was the charity voted for by our Members. For those that are not familiar with Gotch4Life its mission is to inspire and enable people to take action to build their mental fitness. Its vision is a suicide-free world, where no one worries alone.

The day will be an 8am shotgun start, $150 a head with the field limited to 120 players. There will be breakfast and lunch with guest speakers, auctions and raffles afterwards.

The entry form can be located on the Club's website.

From the Archives -  Peter Merrilees

A few weeks ago having read a Golf In Australia magazine article we were able to confirm that Scottish born golf professional, Peter Merrilees, was responsible for the layout of the first 9-holes at Long Reef Golf Club in 1921. He returned in 1923 to help with a bunkering plan.

It has been rewarding to discover a little more about him and I thank members Les Browne, Gary Martinolli, Joy Reece, Peter O'Brien and Lockey McGrath for their help and interest. The main source of information and photographs have come from a list and history written by the North Berwick Golf Club, including the 'North Berwick Golfing Pioneers.' Archive Committee members Joy has also had a close look at electoral rolls and birth, death and marriage Registers.

The North Berwick Golf Club opened in 1832, but had been a rudimentary golf area since the beginning of the 16th century. It considers itself to be the 16th course to have opened in the world.

club imageclub image

Peter Merrilees is just one of a list of over 230 club makers, professionals and course designers from North Berwick Golf Club who since the 1870s have spread their knowledge and enthusiasm for the game of golf, like disciples, throughout the world. North Berwick is to the south/east of Edinburgh with views over the Firth of Forth.

Half a world away on that day in February 1923 when the Long Reef Golf Club was officially opened the demonstration game would have been heavy with Scottish accents from Carnegie Clark, Dan Soutar and Peter Merrilees with only Frank Eyre, Long Reef's own Professional since 1922, representing the Australian born Professionals.

It would have been a smaller golfing world, they knew each other well, and competed often against each other. Peter was one of 16 professionals to play in the early PGA Championship.

LRGC 9-Hole Course layout 1921-23 Peter Merrilees

LRGC Couse extension to 18 Holes 1927-31 Dan Soutar and Frank Eyre

Peter had  arrived in Australia in 1909 having sailed first into South Africa and Darwin on the way. He was following the lead mainly of Carnegie Clark who arrived in 1902 and Dan Soutar in 1903 both from the Carnoustie Club. They were not the first to inspire the migration of others who were often members of their families. For example from North Berwick, Charles Howden, later followed by his brother David arrived in Dunedin in 1871 and founded the first NZ golf course. John Johnstone headed for South Africa in 1885, James Lyon Hutchison went to New York in 1900. James Kerr went to Egypt and Bryan Kerr to Canada. From the 1890s California was a very popular destination. Within Peter's family we know that brother William, Andrew and James all went to the US. Another brother Alfred went to Canada where he was a metalworker. In his lifetime, Peter worked in three continents.

Peter Gullane Merrilees was born in 1879 in North Berwick. Gullane was his mother's maiden name. She was Sarah Gullane. His father William was a shoemaker. As a boy, along with his older brother 'Willie', Peter was a caddy on the West Links North Berwick Course. The clubmaker's timber workshop was familiar to all the family, and the assumption is made that Peter learnt his trade there too.

Peter's professional career in Australia was typical. He made clubs, gave demonstrations and talks, acted as a club professional, planned the layout of golf clubs  and entered the leading competitions of the day. In the Pioneers article the following is said. " It is often written that Merrilees spent most of his time making clubs and teaching and if he had time to practise he played well." He sometimes competed as an unattached professional. We have a brief outline of some of the golf clubs and businesses that he worked at and some of his achievements.

Peter's first position on his arrival was to be the Assistant to Carnegie Clark at Rose Bay, (Royal Sydney) before being put in charge of the few holes at the Municipal Course at Woollahra Park. Eventually this was to grow to 9-holes. He was also employed by the Club Makers Workshop Pro-shop of Jack Donald the Golf Professional at Manly. It then seems that he went to Drummoyne before coming back as the Professional at Manly in 1910. But this seems to have been a short appointment. There was time at the Lismore Workers' Golf Club and by 1936  he was employed as a salesman - we assume of golfing gear and clubs. He was one of the first to inscribe his name on the clubs he designed and made. The department store of A.G. Robertson Ltd in Lismore held the exclusive agency for P.G. Merrilees clubs and regularly advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald. Clubs were usually purchased from Department stores. He was back at the Woollahra Club before 1939.

club imageclub imageclub image

When it comes to course design it can be confirmed that in 1910 he was employed by Goulburn Golf Club to supervise course improvements and give members' instruction. We know about Long Reef in 1921 and 1923. In 1925 he laid out 9-holes at Bundanoon. In 1933 he attended a meeting at the Catholic Club to give members advice in their proposal for the new course at Eastlakes. There may be many more.

His name can be found as an entrant into many major competitions but we do not have a record of him as a major Champion. He was an entrant into the Australian Professional Championship on several occasions as well as the Royal Sydney Cup at Rose Bay. He represented NSW in many interstate competitions. In 1924 he entered the NSW Sun newspaper 500 pound competition, a competition Frank Eyre was to win in 1926. In 1932 he set a new course record at Moore Park which included a hole-in-one on the 18th. By 1939 he was playing off a NSW Golf Association handicap of minus 6, a rating designed to consider the number of Amateurs who entered events at that time.

On several occasions he partnered the teenager Joe H. Kirkwood in exhibition matches. Joe's parents came from Inverness in Scotland. In 1920, the year Joe turned professional, he won both the Australian and New Zealand Open Championships. Peter would eventually become his manager and organise trips for Joe abroad.

Meanwhile two of Peter's younger brothers had definitely served as apprentices as golf club makers with James Hutchinson and James Watt in the North Berwick workshop. In 1906 Andrew was at Aldershot in England but in 1922 he arrived in New York. From 1925 he mainly worked at golf clubs in North Carolina.

Peter had married his Australian wife Sarah in Goulburn in 1910. They had one son, Peter, but sadly he died in 1912. There were no more children. Electoral rolls show that they were living together in Manly until 1935 but that was the last mention of them being together. There is no record of a divorce. Sarah died in Manly in 1963.

The Pioneers article states that in June 1939 Peter applied for a leave of absence from the Woollahra Golf Club and the Council and with his Australian wife Sarah, he travelled to visit his brother in the US. Joy Reece's research disputes this idea. The ship's passenger list does not include Sarah's name. It may have been said to keep up appearances!

It was not the safest time to travel for anyone. By May 1939 Australia was being prepared for war. It seems that it was more than a term of absence as by August 1939 he had joined his brother as the Assistant Pro at Emerywood Country Club North Carolina. He became an American citizen within the year. War was declared in September 1939. Peter meanwhile was appointed Head Professional at Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club in California where those golfers who had originated at the North Berwick Club were well established in the State. This was at a time when the US was hoping to remain neutral in the war. Peter remained in the United States for the next twenty years until his death in Sonoma County, California in 1959. His brother Andrew had died in 1951.

We do not know if Peter visited Australia again, or indeed visited Scotland. During his thirty years as a Professional in Australia Peter seems to have had his longest relationship with Woollahra Golf Club and was also busily occupied as an independent golf club maker. It seems as if he worked and played in the shadows of Carnegie Clark and Dan Soutar who prospered as course designers and champion golfers.

We can now add the details of just who designed the first 9 holes to the E-book "The First 100 years." Answer - Peter Gullane Merrilees in 1921.

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B) is correct.

For a ball to be replaced in the right way, it must be set down and let go. This means the player must use his or her hand to put the ball back in play on the spot from which it was lifted or moved

Rule 14.2 b(2) (How Ball Must Be Replaced).

Jeremy did not replace his ball in the right way.  If his or her incorrect procedure of replacing the ball is not corrected before the stroke is made the player gets one penalty stroke.
