Members Level One Rules Evening - Monday 29th July at 5pm

GolfNSW Rules expert Andrew Robb will be hosting a Level One Rules information session at Long Reef Golf Club next Monday 29th July at 5pm. The two hour session will cover the 'must know' rules that commonly arise in Club competition play, and also those that are frequently misinterpreted. This opportunity doesn't arise very often in Sydney, so feel free to bring along a friend regardless of them being an LRGC Member. Register your attendance via the timesheet set up for Monday 29th July.

Cardiac Arrest and Emergency Response Evening - Tuesday 20th August at 6pm

Over 8,500 people experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in NSW every year. Only 12% will survive. For every minute that passes after a person has a cardiac arrest, the chance of survival decreases. Quick action could save a life.

Are you the most prepared you could be if faced with a similar situation?

Shield Training, a group of active experienced intensive care paramedics have recently focused on educating golf club members on the important steps to know in the case of an emergency.

A Members information night will held on Tuesday 20th August at 6pm. I encourage Members to attend.

Men vs Women

Following the presentation of the Men vs Women on Sunday 21st July, it was identified that the wrong format was used to decide the winner of the competition and the Women were incorrectly awarded the trophy. When the correct 4BBB match format was applied, the Men won the day 6 matches to 2.

Ensuring Safe Play on the Course

At Long Reef Golf Club, we are fortunate to have one of the best golf courses on the Peninsula with a strong Membership. When playing, it is important to remember our shared responsibility for maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  1. Safety First
Every golfer is responsible for their own safety, as well as their playing partners and others on the course. Always be aware of your surroundings and ensure that no one is in harm's way before you take your shot.
  2. Respecting Other Players
One of the fundamental rules of golf etiquette is to avoid "hitting up" on the group ahead.
This means waiting until the group in front of you is out of range before you hit your shot.
Not only is this courteous, but it also prevents accidents and injury
  3. Clear Communication
If you accidentally hit a ball towards another group, immediately shout "Fore!" to alert them. This simple act can prevent potential injuries and shows respect for your fellow golfers.
  4. Pace of Play
Maintaining a good pace of play is crucial. The 10th hole at Long Reef is a "Call up hole". Before hitting your shot on the 10th, make sure the group on the 10th hole have signaled for your group to hit their shots from the tee. It is important to acknowledge their callup.
The group on the green should then move to the back of the green and watch the approaching shots.
Following these guidelines, we can all contribute to a safer and more pleasant golfing experience.

From the Course

The Golf Course is starting to dry out extremely well and we are able to get back into a maintenance routine. All greens have been spiked at 80mm depth, this process will relieve compaction, enhance root growth and promote better turf health during the wet weather of late.

The 14th and 15th fairways have finally dried out to open the holes and get mowers on them.

Our Volunteers continue to do an outstanding job as they improve the garden maintenance program. If you would like to join the volunteers program please get in touch with me (super@lrgc.com.au) as we would love the program to grow in numbers.

You may have noticed some damage across the Course over the past fortnight. Unfortunately on several mornings our team have arrived to find  damage to multiple greens and water bubblers. The team have done a great job repairing the surfaces in the early hours to ensure our Members play isn't delayed.

Measuring Green Speed with a Stimpmeter

The stimp reading on greens refers to the speed at which a golf ball travels on a putting surface, measured using a device called a stimpmeter. Here's how it works:

  • Place the stimpmeter on a flat part of the green.
  • Set a golf ball in the notch at the top of the stimpmeter.
  • Slowly raise the stimpmeter until the ball releases and rolls down the groove, rolling across the green surface.
  • Measure the distance the ball travels in feet and record it.
  • Repeat this process in multiple directions to get an average distance.

Friday Club

From the Archives - Radford & Burke

It is always exciting to receive donated memorabilia to add to the club's archives, especially something from the 40s. One of the two tankards (shown below right) which were presented as medals will stay at the club, the other is on loan. They both have engravings showing the event, the date, the winner and the score of the day. These medals and other examples used over the years are now on show in the Members' Bar.

Won in 1940 and then in 1947 by Laurie Radford the trophies are like bookends to the war years. One was played for and won on the original 18-hole course layout, the other on the newly renovated post-war course after all major competitions had been cancelled for the duration. Opened again in 1946, an Apperly course design was followed to repair damage done by flattening sand dunes and peppering it with artillery shells!

The medals were won at a time when only one medal was presented for the day across all grades. Laurence (Laurie) Radford's silver medal tankards have been donated by his grandson Peter Burke and Peter's wife Pam. These tankards represent a family connection to the club that has continued for 75 years and for four overlapping generations.

club imageclub imageclub image

Peter's grandfather Laurie was the first to join the club in 1939 followed by Peter's uncle Bill in 1956. He was followed by both Peter's parents, first his father Richie Burke  in 1957 and then his mother Nola Burke (nee Radford) in 1960. His wife Pam became a member in 1993. Peter and Pam's three children joined as Juniors in the 90s and finally in 2007 Peter became a member too.

Laurence Vivian Radford was born in 1901. He married Lorna in 1927 and their children Nola and  William were born in 1929 and 1930. Laurie joined Long Reef in 1939 but by 1942 applied for membership category 8a which allowed for a suspension of membership during the war years. He fudged his age to join the army, saying he was born in 1904. He spent 3 years on active service and didn't see his family for that time. He was posted to Darwin and spent his entire war service driving supplies/convoy trucks from Darwin to Alice Springs where preparations were made in fear of a Japanese invasion. He was strafed and bombed by Japanese aircraft during that time. He arrived home safely in 1945 only to be refused membership to the RSL on his deployment because he had not served overseas, a condition of RSL membership at that time.

On his return Laurie worked as a weigh bridge operator living out his life in the Kingsway in Dee Why until his death. Laurie had returned to play at Long Reef in 1946 and remained a member until 1960. His son Laurence William had joined him in 1956 and Bill remained a member for the next 13years. Daughter Nola joined as Nola Burke in 1960. Her husband Richie had joined two years earlier in 1957.

club imageclub imageclub image

Before and during his golfing years Richie, (Peter's father) was a keen sportsman across a list of sports. He began playing first grade rugby league for Manly Sea Eagles in their inaugural year in 1947 and remained a member all his life.  He was a member of Dee Why Surf Club from 1941. Here he was the President for many years, he also acted as a Chief Instructor and was Treasurer and Chairman of the organising committee for the Australian Surf Life Saving titles held at Dee Why in 1975. There were also commitments and positions held at the local Soccer Club, The Men's Amateur Swimming Club and he was also patron of the Dee Why Lions Junior Rugby Club. He was more than well qualified to be part of the committee at the golf club.

Richie was elected to the Club Committee in 1977 before becoming Vice-Captain the next year. He actually became acting-Captain four months later when Vic Roberts moved to Queensland. He was elected Captain in 1979 for the next three years. He was there to celebrate the Junior Pennant win and introduce the idea of presenting Club blazers to winning teams. Perhaps he was reminded of the time when he joined when it was expected that after showering you were to add a jacket and tie before the presentation. Richie and friends only had their wedding suits so this is what they wore. In 1984 Richie left Long Reef to join Cromer but he remained a House member.

club imageclub image

Richie may have left but Peter's mother Nola remained. A gentle lady Nola served the club in all ways.  She took every opportunity to help and volunteer. She played pennants, has her name on both Bronze Premiership Boards. Her lowest handicap being 16. She served on the women's Committee twice as Secretary for a total of six years. She caddied for years for the Grade Team, took part in the concerts, played bridge and was the best of organisers, along with Shirley Jenkins, of the sweeps on the special women's Melbourne Cup lunches!

In 2010, Nola was congratulated on becoming the first woman at the club who could claim to have completed 50 years of uninterrupted golf playing membership. Her gold membership was also acknowledged with a certificate from Golf New South Wales.

Pam represented the next generation of golfers in the family, nominated by her mother-in-law Nola. She joined in 1993, over 30 years ago. By 1997 Pam had volunteered for the women's committee and is remembered for giving exemplary service as the handicapper over a total of eight years. Many days were also spent helping with the Junior Programme when her three children Mathew, Campbell, and Ashley were taking part. More recently she has helped with the Rookies programme. In 2018 she was recognised for her contribution to the club by the John Mullins Achievement award. (Please see Pam's story in the 100 years of LRGC on -line book page 216).

Graduating from the Bronze Pennant teams Pam, having already been a regular caddy for the Grade, joined the Grade team as a player in 2007. A Grade team win came in 2015. She has won the Bronze Championship, the Bronze Foursomes and the Club Foursomes Championship on three occasions. Pam's knowledge and experience of the club and golf in general is extensive.

Finally in 2007 Peter got to join in with the fun of it all, leaving behind other competitive sports and taking time-out from running his own business. He had been playing his part at the club in the background though along the way, having sponsored the Barrenjoey Silver trophy for over 15 years. Peter is enjoying his golf and has been a trophy getter in the Friday Club, enjoying playing in the men's field and in mixed events. He won the Foursomes Cup with Pam as his partner, another family achievement.

We thank all the Radfords and Burkes for all their support at the club over all the years - and for the tankards!

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B is correct.

When Brendan first decided to take free relief, his right to lift his ball without penalty was given by Rule 16.1b. When he changed his mind the right to lift his ball under Rule 16.1b was no longer valid.

(Clarification 9.4b/4 -  Official Guide to the Rules of Golf )

Having replaced his ball in its original position, Brendan may now play the ball as it lies, or taking an additional penalty, declare his ball unplayable.
