Reef Breezes | Thursday 8 August 2024

Dear KIM,

From your Board

Below are notes from the Board Meetings held on 25 July 2024.

New Members

Taking into account the attrition rate at the end of the 2023-2024 Membership year and ensuring timesheets remain accessible through the winter period, the Club extended invitations to 20 applicants from the waitlist to join as Provisional Members. These new Members will be inducted on 8 August and Membership will commence on 12 August.

We continue to have a lengthy waitlist predicted at over a 2 year wait.

Craig Parry Design - Mounds Redesign

Craig Parry has returned to Long Reef to commence the planning the process for the redevelopment of the mounds across the 14th, 15th and 16th holes. The turf condition has deteriorated with the heavy rainfall in May to July followed by strong winds.

Craig is working with the Board on the most effective way to complete the project with the least amount of disruption to Members.

Increased pedestrian traffic on and around the Golf Course

As mentioned in June's From Your Board, there has been a significant increase in pedestrian traffic on and around the Golf Course from non-golfers.

Signage was recently installed in some of the access areas, requesting pedestrians to use the public walkway, however this past weekend demonstrated the disregard for the Golf Course and golf being played.

The Club is now discussing the issue with Northern Beaches Council.

Please remember that Long Reef Golf Club is a shared space, and if there is an imminent risk to the public or they are in the way, to go about alerting them in a respectful manner. Should you have issues, please contact the Golf Shop to assist.

New Course Machinery

The Club recently received a new Toro Multi Pro 5800 Spray machine for $134,000. This machine replaced the same model last purchased in 2016 for $89,000, a 50% increase over 8 years.

Acoustic Treatment in Function Room

Acoustic panels will be installed on the ceiling of the Reef Room as a trial to reduce the noise reverberations in the Function rooms. If it proves successful, the panelling will be extended in to the Pacific Room.

Rules Information Night

The Rules Night put on by Golf NSW was a success with over 100 Members attending on Monday 29th July. On the night there were two questions raised by the Membership concerning the 3rd hole and the 13th tee area as to whether "Conditions of Play" for the holes can be applied.

The back of the current scorecard reads:

3rd Hole - Condition of Play - When playing the tee shot from the teeing ground of the 3rd hole, players are prohibited from playing on to the 3rd green. A player whose ball lands on the 3rd green will be disqualified.

And

13th Hole - Conditions of Play - When the tee markers are placed at the edge of the artificial turf: A player required or electing to play from the "teeing area" remains two club-lengths deep in applying Rule 6.2b (definitions)

Golf NSW has provided the following revised wording and advised that the Club can provide Conditions of Play for the 3rd Hole:

Players enter this competition in the knowledge that playing a ball onto the 3rd green from the 3rd tee is not permitted. Players who do so will be removed from the competition.

And

For the 13th Hole:

Players enter this competition in the knowledge that when playing from the 13th tee you may be required to play from the synthetic teeing ground. Players who play from outside the defined synthetic teeing area will be removed from the competition.

Please note that the changed wording for the Conditions of Play for the 3rd and 13th holes is effective from Wednesday 31 July.

Captain's Trophy

The Captains Trophy was played over the last two weeks with the final between Lisa George and Lisa Mackenzie playing against Fiona Woolley and Tracey Cantwell. The final was played in cold and challenging conditions with wind and rain to test the players.  A great match ensued. The two Lisas went 2 up early in the match only to have Fiona and Tracey fight back to get back to square. The two Lisas then made another charge to go 3 up with 4 to play but Fiona and Tracey were not giving in without a fight.Fiona and Tracey fought back to be 1 down on the 17th.However, Lisa Mackenzie played a brilliant 18th hole and the two Lisas won the Captain's Trophy 2 up. Well done to Lisa George and Lisa Mackenzie on a wonderful win (pictured above right). It was a pleasure to walk around and referee the match watching such great golf.  The game was played in a great spirit by all four players.

From the Course

The Course has finally dried out, and we are now resuming our regular maintenance routine. We managed to spike the greens just in time for our major renovations in August. Unfortunately, vandalism was a significant issue during the school holidays, with bubblers pushed over, flags thrown into dams and bushes, and tee markers stolen. The 3rd and 1st greens were also damaged, requiring our staff to re-turf the affected areas. These incidents have been reported to Dee Why Police.

We have treated the tees with a selective herbicide to eliminate winter grass; this process will need to be repeated in the coming weeks. The tees are in full dormancy and showing wear and tear as winter comes to an end. To enhance their aesthetic appearance, we have sprayed the tees with a green pigment.

Bunkers have been trimmed and sprayed for weeds and continue to hold up well after the challenging conditions. Our volunteers have worked tirelessly around the 2nd and 10th holes, removing weeds and Lomandras and replanting with native Banksias and Westringia.

On the 1st of August, we had a demonstration with two robotic Husqvarna mowers. These mowers operate independently, navigating around obstacles and returning to their charging stations as needed. Equipped with GPS for efficient mowing and position tracking, they are known for their quiet operation, allowing use day or night without disturbance. Designed to work in various weather conditions, they can cut at a height of 10mm or up to 60mm for rough areas. The mowers have sensors to detect obstacles and lift or tilt blades when necessary, ensuring safe operation around golfers. Being battery powered, they are environmentally friendly and cost effective to run.

In September, we will have a robotic mower on loan for two weeks, operating around the 12th fairway and rough, with the charging station located at our maintenance shed.

Click HERE to see a robotic mower in action.

Danny Vera | Head Golf Professional

Tell us about yourself?
I moved over to the Northern Beaches from the Eastern Suburbs 25 years ago where I currently reside with my wife and two kids who are 21 & 17 years old.

I love watching all sports, particularly my favourite NRL team, the Roosters (I hate losing to Manly!). Once a week I enjoy playing a competitive game of touch footy with my mates.

What are your hobbies or what do you like to do on your days off?
When I'm not working in the Golf Shop I aim to play golf once weekly. Staying fit and healthy by exercising at the gym regularly. Enjoy watching my kids play their sports on the weekend. I also cherish being able to watch the Roosters play whilst enjoying a quality bottle of red wine.

How long have you worked at LRGC?
In 1996 I turned professional beginning my apprenticeship at Terry Hills GC. 10 years later I began work at Long Reef in 2006 where I've currently been Head Professional for the last 17 years.

What do you love about Long Reef?
Having worked here for the time I have I've been fortunate enough to make connections with our members. The staff in the Golf Shop are amazing to work with. The whole outlook of the Course is amazing to look at and be able to work around.

From the Archives | Keith Warren

Getting to know the Club President

In our 103 year history, Long Reef Golf Club has had 20 Club Presidents. Our 21st President is Keith Warren. The baton has been passed down from the first President in 1921, Henry Lovell Mann. He was the trilby hat wearing retiree, and the then Vice President of Bonnie Doon Golf Club. The time served in the office of President varies widely as does the variety of skills brought to the role.

club image

Keith was born in Johannesburg in 1969. He has 1 brother and 2 sisters who live in various places around the world. He describes his father as a "mad golfer"- a passion that passed to Keith even though the rest of his family showed little interest.

His schooling and tertiary education took place in South Africa. At school he played cricket, tennis and rugby before becoming a little more serious about his golf when he attended University. He was a member of the Parkview Golf Club in Johannesburg.

Keith has a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Accounting degrees and is a Chartered Accountant, completing his Articles under a scholarship with K.P.M.G.

In 1995 he began working with PepsiCo in their Southern African Kentucky Fried Chicken business and was transferred to Australia in 1997 always living on the Northern Beaches. In 2005 he was recruited into the role of Region Managing Director in Africa and move backed to Southern Africa. He led the development of the now international KFC "Add Hope" programme which currently provides 35 million meals a year to malnourished children in Africa.

His work saw him travel extensively overseas (80 countries) and gave him the opportunity to play different golf courses in many different countries including some of the world's best. In 2012 he returned to the Northern Beaches permanently.

club image
Long Reef is now an important part of his life. His wife Tanya Gadiel is an enthusiastic Member who loves her outings with the ladies and beats him regularly in the Sunday comp. His son Joel works at the Club in the bar and functions, whilst studying for his nursing degree. He is a passionate young golfer who is part of our Eric Apperly team. Keith describes watching Joel's development as a golfer since he took up the sport 4 years ago as pure joy, and loves being his caddy.

In 2014 Keith went into semi-retirement occupying himself with involvement on various boards, some consulting, social responsibility and private investment work.

He describes himself as a "Covid" Member when it comes to his Membership at Long Reef. In 2020 he needed a physical outlet and golf was a happy way to beat the Covid blues. He chose Long Reef over the other beaches courses because of the stunning vistas, the excellent Course and the welcoming Membership.

In February 2022, due to the resignation of the then Treasurer, a casual vacancy came up on the Board. The Board sought expressions of interest from Members to fill the position and Keith applied.

Keith had been seeking a volunteer opportunity to give back to his community and had already worked with the Salvation Army and Marine Rescue. Long Reef was a perfect fit. After the selection process he was successful and appointed to the Board.

In April 2022, the standing President's (Steve Twigg) tenure of 5 years came up and Keith was asked by the Board to take up the role of President. He was subsequently elected as President at the Annual General Meeting in 2022 and re-elected by the Membership in 2023.

As part of his commitment to social development in the developing world, Keith continues to advise and serve on boards including a social development investment by the Norwegian Government in one of Nigeria's largest restaurant companies.

Keith says his greatest joy as President is getting to know more of our incredible Members, building friendships and supporting Ben and the team's delivery of the Club's fabulous success. He hopes that his business and corporate governance expertise, commitment to volunteering and passion for golf will assist in ensuring the long term prospering of our Club.

The Archive Committee

Rules with George | Answer

Answer:  C is correct.

John must use the position of the spot under the towel below the ball as the reference point. The relief area is an area within 1 club length of the reference point. not nearer the hole than the reference point and in the same area of the course as the reference point   I.e within the bunker.

This method of taking relief for a ball on or in a movable obstruction applies in all situations except where the ball lies on a putting green. Rule 15.2a applies.
