Dear Kimberley,

Chun-Ta equals the course record with a 64!

Last chance saloon, the August Medal.

Chun-Ta Wu's final chance to break the Course record before leaving for Minnesota and his College career was in the Saturday medal. Even Par after 3 holes including a par on a Par 5 did not seem like an auspicious start. 4 birdies in the next 6 holes would have been encouraging. Then 3 pars were followed by 3 birdies in 3 holes. A bogey followed by a Par meant he needed to get a birdie on the last to equal the Course record. Playing with former Captain Les Browne we can be confident in the scorecard that showed he did just that. Les remarked that it could have easily been better, with a number of putts going close. Congratulations Chun-ta on a course equalling 64.The previous 64 was 19 years ago. We will miss you, particularly when Major Pennants rolls around and we can't count on that win with you at No.1!

Please see Chun-Ta's scorecard below.

From the Course

Over the past fortnight, the Course has received 47mm of rain, bringing the year to date total to 1065.4mm-474.4mm more than this time last year. While the Course had begun to dry out, the recent rainfall has left certain areas wet again. The forecast for spring and summer suggests above average rainfall with lower temperatures which will be beneficial for the Course, especially considering the semi drought conditions we experienced last year.

This year, we planned to conduct our spring renovations on the greens, including hollow tining and topdressing with sand for the first time in eight years. Unfortunately, we encountered two breakdowns with our core master, which caused damage to the 12th and 13th greens. (see pictures below)
To prevent further damage, we reverted to solid tining to avoid tearing up more greens and minimise the risk of additional breakdowns. The day started overcast and eventually turned to rain, adding to the stress. However, Tuesday brought better weather, allowing us to complete the renovations and get all the sand rubbed into the holes. Moving forward, I will be exploring alternative machinery options, particularly for the Autumn renovations next year.

Long Reef is currently looking to hire an Apprentice Sports Turf Manager. If any Members know of young people interested in pursuing a career in the Golf Course industry, please encourage them to contact me directly at 0450 411 928 or super@longreefgolfclub.com.au for more information.

Tell us about yourself?

Hello to my favourite Golf Members, I am 19yrs old and a northern beaches local. I am currently studying paramedicine, to hopefully one day be working in the emergency rescue helicopters.

What are your hobbies or what do you like to do on your days off?
On my days off you will find me playing some sort of sport. I love soccer, currently playing for the Wakehurst Premier League team. I wish I could say I'm good at golf but it is harder than it looks to hit a stationary ball. Sometimes I dream about having a hole in one.

How long have you worked at LRGC?
One whole year!

What do you love about Long Reef?
I love the pretty view when making a coffee or pouring a beer. I love getting to work and seeing Alex our Operations Manager's happy beaming smile everyday. But what I love most of all are the beautiful Members!

Rules with George | Question

Question: Jim was playing in a stroke round and had a caddie.

He started play with 14 clubs in his bag.

On the fourth hole he asked for his wedge. His caddie said he could not find it. We must have lost it. Only 13 clubs in bag.

Jim sent his caddie to the Pro Shop to borrow another wedge.

Jim used the borrowed club on the next few holes after his caddie returned.

Which is correct?

  1. Jim is OK . He again has 14 clubs....No penalty.
  2. Jim will be penalized for replacing his lost club.

Michelle Milsted  - Meet the Women's President

Featuring Rae Milsted and Judy O'Brien

2024 is the first year of Michelle's Presidency. Joining at the same time as husband Gary in 2019 she now shares a love of the club with Gary's Mum, long-term member, Rae Milsted.

Rae joined in 1977 and Michelle was to become a part of the family very soon after and has always been very aware, having heard all of Rae's stories over the years of the great value of being a member of Long Reef Golf Club.

Gary has stories to tell too. He grew up just around the corner, where the family live now and he acted as a caddy at the club as well as having a continuing involvement in the Surf Life Saving Association. Michelle and Gary have travelled many miles since first moving to Collaroy when they married. Their first home was originally owned by Rae's Mum.

club imageclub image

Sport has played a very important part in Michelle's life, and she is more than qualified to be added to our All-rounders stories. She especially has an appreciation of how important sport can be to meet friends and contacts wherever she has lived, especially when moving to somewhere new.

Michelle grew up in Villawood and as a teenager excelled as a runner competing at State level Cross Country events. It was the game of Volleyball that became a life-long passion. She played for 40 years commencing at school and soon becoming a member of the U16 State team and progressing through to the Open State Team and the National league. She has travelled to a number of World Master's Games, winning gold in Beach Volleyball and Silver at the indoor event. When first knowing Gary, she joined him as a member of the Surf Club. At this time, she was part of the first female Bronze squad at Collaroy SLSC, going on to compete in beach sprints and later in March Past. Currently her other passion, besides golf, is beach tennis and she can often be seen playing this on Collaroy beach, summer or winter.

In her working life, Michelle pursued all sorts of clerical duties, media buying, progressing to Office Managing. Gary and Michelle have two children, Emma and  Melanie and she did work part-time for a while when they were younger, and of course there were a variety of volunteer roles to do at the children's school including things like coaching Little Athletics

Family life was to change somewhat in 1998 which led to them only spending three years in Australia over the next 20 years. The first trip with Gary's job, took them to York in England for 16 months before returning to Australia. It was long enough away to get a taste of travelling and living in Europe. Three years later another opportunity was offered. Gary was working for Nestlé in a variety of roles, but mainly purchasing and commodities. The family moved to Switzerland for three years in 2003, then England to Croydon near London for nine years and then back to Switzerland in 2015 for four more years.

With every move Michelle used playing Volleyball to meet people, but in England also took up Tennis, which was mainly played indoors.

By the end of 2018 they were ready to come home. Eldest daughter Emma had already made that decision a year earlier and  Melanie decided to stay in the UK where she remains. Arriving back in February 2019, Gary and Michelle joined the Rookies only a month later in March. They followed the philosophy that playing a sport was the best way to settle back in, meet new friends, as well as learning a new sport together.

The Rookies group gave Michelle everything she hoped for. She made new close friends and at the same time learnt and improved her golf game very quickly. In a matter of a year her handicap was down to the mid 20's. She has achieved a hole-in-one, been the runner-up in the Long-Markers trophy in 2022 and played in the Bronze Plaque Pennant team.

club imageclub image

In the relatively short time after becoming a full member Michelle threw herself in the deep end. Everyone saw her ability as a very efficient organiser in her first year as part of the excellent fund-raising team. Since then, Michelle served on the Women's General Committee before taking on the role of Women's President. There is no doubt that she is serving the club so well and protects all the values we have as a club - a club that is uniquely Long Reef. She is delighted to serve and enjoys all the comradery and friendship that a club brings. Rae is always ready to hear the golf club news and come down to the club to support.

Rae is galloping towards gold membership status. Sadly eye problems prevented her from continuing her golf and attending the Bridge club which she has done for years. There were so many achievements at every level. Rae was on the very first Barrenjoey Committee. On the day that she joined in 1977 Judy O'Brien was interviewed too and they became friends and followed similar paths to the pennant teams, major trophies and friendships. They won the Bronze Foursomes in 1987, having been the runners-up the year before. As an example, they were also together in the Bronze Plaque in 1988. The reason for mentioning Judy in Michelle's story is to say a very Happy Birthday to Judy for this week she has turned 90.

club imageclub image

HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY JUDY O'BRIEN

Judy may have stopped playing golf ten years ago, but her infectious laughter can still be heard on Bridge Club days and she is still a member. The golf achievements are one thing, there was also time being on the committee, playing pennants and winning trophies, not to forget being President of the Bridge Club. But... lets acknowledge Judy as a major organiser of the legendary concerts! Judy is the talented singing and dancing star, and she raised the bar for all. The ideas and execution of Christmas dress-up day ideas were so clever and fun! Golf days were happier when she played! Have a great day Judy.

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B is correct. Jim has breached Rule 4.1 b(3), which says

If a player started a round with 14 clubs and then lost a club during the round, the player must not replace it with another club.

If Jim used the replacement club for 3 holes he would incur a penalty of 2 strokes for each hole, with a maximum penalty of 4 strokes for the round. The added club must be declared out of play and must not be used again during the round.
