Tuesday Competitions

From 1st January 2025 there will be a change to the format of the Tuesday competition. The current format has a separate Men and Women's comp which will be replaced with a Medley Competition.

This change is in keeping with the Club's current competitions on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The nine hole competition will continue to be played with no changes.

Optional tees will be available for all competitions, except Monthly Medals, for both Men and Women.

Slow Play

As summer approaches, the Club has increased the number of timeslots on the timesheets for Member competitions. Consequently, more Members are looking to play and full fields are becoming more common. It is important that all Members are following the Pace of Play  policy of the Club which states: Your place on the course is directly behind the group in front, not directly in front of the group behind.

We are also monitoring late cancellations on timesheets. We can identify repeat offenders and a warning letter may be sent. Please be considerate to others who are wanting a game.

From the Course

As of now, we've recorded a total of 1146.2mm of rainfall this year, a significant increase compared to the 723.6mm at the same time last year. Our dams are still holding at 70% capacity. Long Reef seems to have missed the bulk of the recent storms lately. Mona Vale received over 50mm in the super storm on Friday 1st November while Long Reef recorded only 9.8mm. I'm hoping we will get a big supercell soon to help fill our dams before summer.

We have almost completed the tee major renovation and they are recovering well. We are hoping the weather remains stable and we will see consistent growth heading into summer. I'm planning on re turfing the back of the 13th tee in the next few weeks as the surface has become bare due to the amount of foot traffic and wear and tear.  We have spread a significant amount of cores at the back of the 3rd tee to promote growth and to improve the playing conditions in the worn out area.

We are beginning our program to remove couch from the greens by applying a selective herbicide. As a result, you may start to notice small patches of dead couch grass around the edges of greens. This is all part of a process as the couch is being selectively targeted and will die out over time. This process will need a few applications over a few months.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Adrian had played his third stroke to the 18th hole at Long Reef. He was disappointed that his ball was not safely on the green. As he got closer to the green he realized that his ball was just short of the green in a sprinkler head. He was relieved that he would have free relief as that was an immovable obstruction. He knew that he would be able to drop or place his ball very close to the forward flag. He selected his Reference point and marked his one club-length Relief Area. He was delighted that one end of the relief area was slightly overlapping the green without being nearer the hole than the reference point.

Which is correct?

A. Adrian may place his ball on the green in the relief area.
B. Adrian may drop his ball on the green in the relief area.
C. Adrian must ignore the portion of the relief area on the green, and drop his ball just off the green

Friday Club

From the Archives - Orange Week of Golf

Our men players have their annual visit to Goulburn now in to its 71st year, but did you know that the women have a long standing history of visits to Orange in October each year?

The women of Duntryleague Golf Club celebrated 100 years of their 'Week of Golf", the Open, at the end of October and once more a group of Long Reef players were there to take part. They came home with a little memorabilia - a special marker and some very special memories of a fun time. There were some winners amongst them, as you can see with the trophy cards in hand in the photo below.

Can you imagine the Associates (women) committee at the Duntryleague Club going to the Club Committee in 1924 and asking for a full week to be made available for women's golf! To the men's credit they must have said yes and even cleared their own locker room so that it could be used to store the women's clubs for the week. Originally Monday and Tuesday was for C and D division with 9-holes available if A and B division wished to practice. Wednesday was for Foursomes and Thursday and Friday was for A and B grade. The competitions were seeded. Times have changed and now the golf is played over three days. On Monday and Tuesday all players are combined for Stroke/Stableford play but scored in their grade/division. Wednesday is still for Foursomes.

21 Long Reef members competed this year and the photo shows them in their 'costumes' for the themed celebration dinner -  the Roaring 20's. The visit was organised and co-ordinated by member Nan Crump and for many years has also been organised by Ondrae Heiser, who thinks she has been at least 30 times and before that the late Marie Fairhall was in charge. This year there were around 200 players from all over the State taking part.

The first visit to Orange by Long Reef was in 1961. In 2008 the late Gold Member Nola Burke was acknowledged and congratulated by Duntryleague for attending every year for 45 years from 1963. She didn't do it alone and there have been many visits since then. The only break in the competition was in the war years and during Covid.

For many years our 'girls' would kick off with a competition dress-up night of their own and parade around the swimming pool at the Sundowner Motel. (Now closed) The theme for the dress-up would be announced a couple of weeks earlier back at the club. Marie could always be outrageous, but Ondrea also remembers Barbara Malady diving in, costumes and all. Ondrae says that she would travel up to Orange with a box of wine in the car, provided by the club for the prizes. Pam Burke (the Tuesday B Division winner this year,) describes how the owner of the motel would also dress up and be the drinks station barman for the night.

Pam has attended many 'weeks of golf" since 1994.

The Orange 'girls" would also put on a concert at the club dinner and for many years our players came home with new ideas for the Long Reef concerts which were part of the Annual Dinner.

It is always interesting to see that social activities and trips away like this underpin and strengthen the friendships within the whole membership.

Over the next few years we will see a gaggle of 100th birthday celebrations. Our Friday Club is already thinking about 2033. In our shire we will see Balgowlah 1925, Avalon 1926, Bayview 1926, Mona Vale 1927, Palm Beach 1927, Cromer 1929, and Elanora Country Club 1929  have their 100th celebrations.  Warringah 1936, Monash 1951(although a social club from 1931) and Wakehurst 1972 have to wait!

Rules with George | Answer

Answer:  C. is correct

Adrian acted correctly in determining his reference point and outlining the area for relief.

In Definitions  Rules of Golf. It is made clear that the Reference Point is the point from which the size of the relief area is measured. Additionally the fact is made clear that there may be limits to the location of relief areas. This limitation varies between the different areas of the course such as the general area, putting greens, bunkers and penalty areas.

In Adrian's situation his ball was lying in the general area. When the ball was in the general area the relief area must also be in the general area. Rule 16.1b.

If Adrian had used the area overlying the green he would have been penalized for playing from a wrong place.
