Hole 1 A construction

From Monday 25th November, the construction of an additional green on the 1st hole will commence and is planned to take up to three weeks to complete.

The location of the new green will be on the left-hand side of the 1st fairway just over the creek.

During this time, the 1st hole has been shortened to a Par 3, ensuring the contractors are not in danger of being struck or delaying play. The full 1st hole will return to play on Saturdays and Sundays when work isn't taking place.

The Par 3 will be played from the tee area on the right-hand side of the fairway, on the other side of the creek near the trees. To the actual first green it will measure:

  • Blue - 143m
  • Red - 123m

Days where play starts from only one tee (Monday & Tuesday), play will start from the 9th tee.

Safety and Lightning

As summer is just about upon us it is timely to remind Members of the Club's Severe Weather Policy.  The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safety of all players and staff at Long Reef Golf Club during potential severe weather conditions e.g. lightning, extreme winds and rain. In the event of lightning the following applies:

Suspension of play is signalled by one long sound of the siren located on the roof of the Golf Shop. All Players must mark their ball and return to the Clubhouse/Golf Shop immediately

The Golf Shop staff will monitor the weather conditions and lightning detected on systems to assist in advising players and staff to leave the Course. To ensure all players on the Course hear the siren sounded, the Golf Shop staff will manually activate the siren at the 7th tee when the automated siren on the Golf Shop roof is sounded

There will be a minimum of 30 minutes from the siren suspending to the siren resuming play. When the lightning has moved outside a 10km radius of the Course, the siren will then sound when there is no further danger from lightning and order play to be resumed, players can then resume play.

From the Course

As of now, we've recorded a total of 1200.4mm of rainfall this year, a significant increase compared to the 723.6mm at the same time last year. In the last fortnight a total of 54.2mm has fallen on the course. The dams are now at 80% capacity.

Work has commenced on the new 1A green. The first step involves marking out the green and surrounds. The next step involves rotary hoeing the marked area and scraping it all up using a bobcat. Given the site's history as a wet area, they are installing extensive drainage to address the issue.

Once drainage is complete, they will source fill material from the left hand side mound further up in the rough and transport it back to the new green site. This fill will allow us to raise the green to improve its playability and drainage. After the fill is delivered, the area will be shaped and the green will be shelled out. We will then place 250mm sand to create the base of the new green.

This sand is essential for proper drainage and providing a stable foundation for seed to establish effectively. We will install a new ring main around the green with new toro sprinklers. Finally, the green will be seeded and the surrounds will be turfed. The project is expected to take approximately 3 weeks, I look forward to seeing the new green and surrounds take shape.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Jim was  playing the third hole. His third shot to the green plugged into the almost vertical wall of the bunker. He realised the difficulty of the ball clearing the front wall so decided to take back on line relief.

He kept the original spot of the ball in the bunker in line, lifted his ball, and left the bunker going back approximately30 metres outside the bunker. He played a relatively easy lofted shot and the ball finished on the green just short of the hole. He putted the ball to complete the hole.

Jim's penalty for his actions was

A) One stroke
B) Two strokes
C) Jim was disqualified

Lee Grierson | Golf Shop PGA Associate (Trainee)

Tell us about yourself
I originally grew up in Forbes and moved to the Northern Beaches at a young age. I just turned 27!

On the completion of high school, I undertook studies of psychology/marketing at university whilst working at Wollongong GC from 2017 - 2021. Then going on to work at Golf NSW for a year prior to starting work here at Long Reef.

What are your hobbies, what do you like to do on your days off?
When I'm not working, I enjoy training at the Strokes Gained Studio in Brookvale, swimming at the beach, working on my golf game, and catching up for coffee with my mates.

How long have you worked at LRGC?
I've worked in the golf shop at Long Reef for 3 months now and Jenny can confirm my golf game has improved drastically since joining the golf shop team!

What do you love about Long Reef?
The staff are fantastic to work with, the many members we get to converse with, and of course the beautiful scenery that surrounds Long Reef.

Friday Club

From the Archives

Charlie Hadlow - the Founder of the Friday Club

club image

New members at Long Reef Golf Club may not be aware of the role that Friday Club plays in creating weekly golf competitions that contribute to the social make-up of the club for both men and women.

The Friday Club committee is already thinking about how they will celebrate their 100th birthday in 2033. It is considered to be the oldest social club within a golf club in Australia. Charlie Hadlow is credited for starting it. Perhaps the Friday Club should have a Charlie Hadlow trophy in its competition calendar! I am sure he had no idea just what this club would become.

The basic information that has been passed on over the years is that Charlie Hadlow started a social club that became known as The Friday Club because he and his friends and colleagues could not play on a Saturday. (This was all before mid-week games). The story goes that Charlie was a racing identity and the first players were mainly jockeys and others in the industry who were busy at the track on a Saturday. Reading between the lines it looks as if Charlie was quite a character and a Charlie not a Charles!

Fortunately we have one photo of him taken in the 40's (picture top left). This was provided to the club when Ross Lanes was writing the history of the club in the late 80s, by Honorary member Dot Leonard. Charlie stands on the then first tee, now the 9th, with five Associate members around him. Dot has her arm in his.

Thanks to Joy Reece of the Archives committee research reveals that Charles' family came from Newcastle where he was born in 1891. He was one of 12 children. Both he and a brother John Herbert enlisted in WW1 in 1914 and those military records show that they both listed "jockey' as their occupation. So far no details are available about Charlie's war service other than he was demobilised in 1918, but when he enlisted we know that he was 5 feet 3 inches tall with blue eyes and fair hair. A good height for a jockey!

His younger brother John was 19 years of age at the start of the war and his application form to serve gave more information, saying that he had completed a 5 year apprenticeship with Foley and Charles Stables at Randwick. John served in the army until 1918 in Egypt, France but mainly in London.

Charlie made the  Sun newspaper in September 1931 in the court reporting section.

"Two S.P. Bookies John Edward Allan (28) boiler maker and Charles Hadlow (40), were each fined 20 pounds at North Sydney Court today for S.P. Betting."

This was at a time when the annual fees at Long Reef were 4 pounds so it was a very sizeable fine. I think he may be describes as a 'colourful character.'

Charlie joined the golf club in August 1934, but he could have started the Friday Club as a private booking a year earlier. We have no way of knowing why 1933 is thought to be the first year as the booking is not mentioned in the Minute books of either year. At the time of joining he lived in Willoughby and his occupationmis listed as a Commissioning Agent and later a Mercer. He moved to Hay Street, Collaroy. By 1958 he changed category to just LRGC Bowling Club membership and in that membership book called himself a Tobacconist. He lived in Plateau Road Collaroy Plateau from 1963.

He had married a little later in life in 1959 in his 60s. His wife  Ella May Rae, a widow, was 18 years younger and her son Barry took the Hadlow name. Charlie did not have any children.

Until the start of this century Friday Club was for men only, many were retirees with the racing connection long gone. In 1992 the golf clubs assistant secretary Kim Sloane played a game on a Friday only to have the Friday Committee convene a special meeting which made sure they had it down in writing that Friday Club was for men only! Associates became full members at Long Reef in 1996 and there are records of women winning events in Friday Club in the 2000s. Sue Telfer was the first female winner.  In 2005, 5 women were prize winners and by 2008 32 women were members. In 2011 Pat Robison became the Friday Club Committee's first female member and she acted as Treasurer, leaving us with some very detailed financial reports to study.

club imageclub imageclub image

The Friday Club's history is not fully documented but in accounts compiled by the late Peter Miller (above left) and also by a Golf Club Board member and President of the Friday Club, George Rodman, we have some accounts to read. There are also some Minutes of Friday Club meetings from 1986 which were given to the archives by Brenda Franklin in 2018. These add more detail to our knowledge of the history of this special club. The Friday Club's committee aims to create a competition that is fun, friendly and fair, with its own handicap system, an active social and fund-raising side, open for our members and guests and players of all ages. Hopefully a full history will be compiled by 2033!

Sandra Mellowes | Archives Committee
