Reef Breezes | Wednesday 19 March 2025

Dear Kimberley,

Change of Local Rule - 18th Hole

From Saturday 22 March, when playing the 18th hole, the practice fairway defined by white stakes will be treated as COMPULSORY GUR. Relief MUST be taken by dropping the ball at the designated drop zone. (see rule 16.1f)

Major Pennants

The final match of the season was played at home against Bankstown. It was a must win for the team against a strong side. Through the first 9 holes the matches were evenly positioned. However, with local knowledge and steely determination the Long Reef team won 4 matches to 3.

Even though they had a win on the 9th, our Major Pennant side faced a relegation match against Ryde Parramatta at Cronulla Golf Club on Sunday 16th. The matches were closely fought and only decided in the last couple of holes. Ryde Parramatta won 4 matches which has relegated our Major Pennant side to Division 3 in 2026.

NPICC

The team faced a tough match against Cromer at Wakehurst on Monday 10th. Mona Vale, Cromer and Long Reef were evenly matched at the top of the ladder with Long Reef ahead on matches won. Our team defeated Cromer 5 ¼ to 2 ¼ which put the team in the final to play Mona Vale at MVGC on Monday 17th.

In windy conditions Mona Vale defeated Long Reef 6 ½ to 1 and were the winners of the 2025 NPICC trophy.

The Mick Snell Cup

The Mick Snell Cup is a knockout competition, with matches determined through an automatic draw.

Registration is available online via MiClub, and all entries must be submitted before the published closing date, as no late entries will be accepted. Once the draw is posted, it is considered final.

The Mick Snell Cup is a handicap matchplay event, players will compete using their GA Daily Handicap applicable on the day of play.

Matches must be played by the designated dates unless special circumstances arise, in which case the Golf Committee will determine any exceptions.

Handicap strokes are awarded based on the difference between players' daily handicaps. If there is a difference greater than 18 strokes, the higher handicapped player will receive two strokes per hole where applicable, using the match index on the scorecard to determine stroke allocation.

When men and women compete against each other, and the par for a hole differs, the outcome on those holes, specifically the 4th and 16th, is determined by the net score in relation to par. Women will play from the red markers, while men will play from the blue.

Play by dates:

Round 2 :  24th May - 4th July

As of the 18th March, the course has received 223.8mm rainfall so far this year compared to 246.6mm the same time last year. In the last fortnight 35mm of rain has fallen on the Course. The dams are at 90% capacity.

On Monday the 10th of March we successfully completed our Autumn Renovation on our greens, using 10mm solid Tynes at a depth of 100mm. This was followed up by topdressing with sand. Once the sand had dried, we brushed them in using our specialised brooms, ensuring even distribution, and then applied 6 minutes of irrigation to help the sand to settle.

Tuesday, we had consistent drizzle and rain throughout the day, which left some residual sand on the greens. Due to the bad conditions, further brushing was not possible at that stage.

On Wednesday afternoon we were able to fully brush in the remaining sand left on the greens. The greens brushed in exceptionally well, by Friday the greens received their first mow at 5mm, followed by rolling them to enhance the smoothness.

On Monday the 17th we managed to mow our greens at their normal height of 3.5mm. Overall, the greens have come through the renovations in great condition, and I expect them to continue improving in coming weeks.

1A green update, the green is progressing well, we have carried out some more reseeding at the front and done some plugging to the sides to encourage more growth, it's now receiving regular mowing at a height of 5mm. We also installed extra drainage for better protection in wet periods.

The trial plot on the 16th fairway is progressing well. It has now received its first mow and a light topdressing, and the results so far have been very promising. I will continue to monitor its process and assess how it responds over the coming weeks. The trial will provide valuable insights into improving turf conditions moving forward.

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Mark Hansen. Mark passed away this morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. He joined the Club in 1993 and was regular Wednesday player. Mark also served as Board Member for 2 years. He was a well -loved Member who will be missed.

He fought very hard to the end and appreciated the extra time that he spent with his family over the last few years.

We extend our deepest sympathy and thoughts to his family during this difficult time.

At this time, we do not know of the funeral arrangements but will pass onto Members once we are aware of the details.

Question:

Arthur was playing in a stroke round. On the 6th hole he hit his second shot left . He thought himself lucky not to have gone into the penalty area just short of the green. When he reached his ball he found it clear of the penalty area but he had interference from the red stake marking the penalty area . Acting quickly he managed to pull the stake out of the ground without damaging the stake.

Jim another member of the group said he was not permitted to remove the stake which is an immovable obstruction. Jim told him to replace the stake and take relief from the immovable obstruction.

Arthur took his advice and played his ball onto the green.

Which applies?

A) Arthur gets the general penalty of 2 strokes for altering the conditions of his stroke

B) Arthur gets a penalty of one stroke

C) Arthur gets no penalty for his actions.

Women's Committees

Women became members of Long Reef Golf Club at the very first opportunity, at the first General Meeting in May 1921. Until 1996 they were called Associate members before the changes, when equality of membership was approved, leading to all women playing full and equal fees after that. The contributions made to the club over 124 years by the committees cannot be estimated in pounds or dollars.

Through their own elected committee they have developed a programme of golf, and as Associate members were also in charge of membership, handicapping and bank accounts. They celebrated the gifted players amongst them, and completed their commitments to the LGU, (to become)WGNSW and GNSW. They act as fund-raising committees and at times in the past became the "housewives' of the Clubhouse.

The Women's committees' duties may have changed following the introduction of computers, but the present committee remains as busy and dedicated as ever honouring the traditions, supporting members and promoting an enthusiastic club spirit.

What's more, they took photos along the way! Many records were lost in the 1950 floods but it is possible to look in the remaining 12 large albums, kept in the locker room to see our history in pictures. Recently over three issues of the newsletter the basic history of the Club's Committee/Board was described.

The photos below show just a few of the faces of the female committee members over the years always there working alongside the Club Committee.

Answer: C is correct.

Rule 8 applies. When Arthur removed the stake he was initially in danger of incurring the general penalty of 2 strokes under Rule 8. Because he acted before playing his stroke Arthur was able to avoid  the penalty by restoring the conditions improved in Breach of Rule 8.1a(1) or 8.1a(2).

This situation would apply at times when a fixed or growing object such as a branch was broken. In such a situation care must be taken to avoid this situation. At times when a stake is removed and broken a new stake may be used to remedy the situation and avoid

Rule 8 applies in many situations not only above ground level but also to improvements made to the ground where divots have been replaced.
