Reef Breezes | Wednesday 2 April 2025

Dear Kimberley,

On Tuesday last week, we had a shorter but productive Board Meeting. There is little new to report back to the Membership other than the progress on the Clubhouse Masterplan which will be the subject of a comprehensive communication within the fortnight.

The mounds on 14, 15 and 16 are still top of mind and we are working through solutions with Craig Parry. However the delays to the Council's project to rebuild the walkway bridge on the 17th will impact timing and what we can do. Needless to say we will communicate as it progresses.

Finally I would like to reiterate, the Board believes in transparency and importantly not only the "what" but also the "why" we do things. If you would like to understand more about anything Club related please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Thanks as always to you the Members. Our Club's continued success is testament to you and your support.

Long Reef Medal and Salver 5th April

This Saturday is the Long Reef Medal and Salver with 112 registered to play.

With the weather looking favourable for Saturday, we are hopeful of a successful event at Long Reef. The best of luck to all participants.

18th No Play Zone

The No Play Zone on the practice fairway is defined by white posts with a green top.

Now that the new local rule governing the No Play Zone is in place, it is timely to remind Members about what is and isn't allowed when your golf ball has been hit into the No Play Zone:

1. If a player hits their ball into the No Play Zone, they are permitted to drop a different ball at the drop zone and play without penalty

2. If a player plays a shot while in the No Play Zone when playing the 18th, a two-shot penalty applies. It is an automatic loss of hole in match play

3. If a player is certain, or almost certain, that their ball has finished in the No Play Zone and plays their next shot from the drop zone only to find their original shot was outside the No Play Zone. In this case the original ball is out of play and the dropped ball is now the ball in play with no penalty.

4. If a player hits a shot beyond the No Play Zone and into the penalty area (Wetlands Dam), the player may take relief under Rule 17.1D, for one penalty stroke. Note: the Player must not take relief into the No Play Zone.

Hudson Shield

The Hudson Shield play-off was between Peter O'Reilly and Richard Spence on Saturday 22nd March. Both players finished with a tied score of - 3. The winner on the countback was Richard Spence. Congratulations to both players for reaching the playoff.

Honouring Mal Denner

Mal was a very popular member of our club for many years.

He and Bob Tuckerman from Manly Golf Club instigated the Northern Peninsula Interclub Competition played between a number of northern beaches clubs.

At the recent dinner at Mona Vale Golf Club to mark the final of this year's competition, Mal was elected as a Life Member of the competition.
Mal was well known within the group as he thought up the " Wood Bee" Trophy, which is given to the winner of the match between the third and fourth teams.

He and his wife Marilyn spent many hours scouring the beaches for the perfect piece of driftwood for the trophy and ended up with a really magnificent trophy.

Unfortunately Mal passed away in 2011 after a fight with cancer but his legacy will remain for many years to come!

Women's Charity Day

I just wanted to let you all know that we had a very successful charity day, raising over $24,500.00 for Women and Children First. Of course we wouldn't have been able to achieve this without the incredible generosity of our members and local community who donated so many fantastic prizes.

A special mention to York Jewellers who donated a beautiful pink diamond pendant for the auction.  Also to Chris Perry, Carol Sherlock and Leanne Caristo for their selfless donations.

A massive thanks to Ben and the staff at Long Reef for their continued support in helping us run our events. It is very much appreciated.

Another thanks goes to the organising committee of Adriana Bowyer, Val Hindmarsh, Fran Taylor, Sandra Haberlin and Libby Cleary for making my job so much easier.

Women's Grade 2025

Another good year for our Grade players in Division 2 finishing equal third with Bayview. The representative players were Emma Thurlow (captain), Alyssa Starc, Kate Shanks, Peta Bird, Kathy Waters, Natalie Driver, Sally Hill and Vanessa Murphy. We were up against Pennant Hills, Killara, NSW, Bayview, Wakehurst and The Australian with Pennant Hills winning the flag this year.

The team finished with two wins, two draws and two losses.  Special mention must go to Peta Bird who was undefeated over the five matches she played.  Also, to Sally Hill who had her first foray into the grade competition this year and was a fabulous addition to the team.

To everyone in the Long Reef team, congratulations on a fantastic grade season!  You were all fantastic, both on and off the course, and played some incredible golf. To the caddies - Karen Smith, Wendy Millson, Ali Gattas, Vanessa Murphy, Sally Hill, Jan Daniels and Pam Burke - thanks for being such tremendous support to the players.

It was wonderful to see that the team will remain in Division 2 for 2026, while Pennant Hills ascends and NSW descends, and we face new challenges as Oatlands returns to the division and Cromer joins us.

Pennants Begins - Silver Salver

Sue Kruse PSM | Women's Captain

As of the 1st April, the Course has received 319.4mm rainfall this year compared to 246.6mm at the same time last year. In the last fortnight 95.6mm of rain has fallen on the Course. The dams are at 100% capacity.

The warm weather, combined with the rainfall, has been great for an extended growing season. The grass is still thriving and growth has been rapid across all areas of the course. My team has been working hard to stay on top of maintenance and are looking forward to the end of the growing season.

Over the past couple of months, we've seen an increase in damage caused by E bikes on the greens, particularly at night. Riders have been skidding on the greens leaving behind large marks. This is not only frustrating but also adds unnecessary workload to my team. I ask all Members to help us by reporting any suspicious activity.

The new 1A is progressing well. We have carried out some more reseeding at the front and some plugging to the sides. We also put some cores down in thin areas to promote more growth.

The recently renovated Greens are recovering well and are now back to normal mowing height. Over the months ahead they will receive their regular light dusting program to promote a firm and true surface.

On Friday the 14th of March, we experienced a major hydraulic blowout on our sidewinder mower on the back of the 18th green surround. Leading to grass dying off. Over the coming weeks, I will closely monitor the area to assess the extent of the damage. If needed we will re turf the damaged area.

The trial on the mound on the 16th fairway is progressing well. With regular topdressing, the area has improved significantly and is now being mown at fairway height. Over the coming weeks we aim to have this area back in play.

Question:

Bert had played his shot to the 8th green but jis ball finished to the right of the green about 15 cm off the green. As he walked to the ball he said "I will be able to putt that".

When he reached his ball he saw that it was lying in a very deep unfilled divot from which it was virtually impossible to play a shot to move the ball onto the green. He decided to declare his ball unplayable and drop it with lateral relief onto the green for one stroke penalty.

Which is correct?

A) Bert is not permitted to take relief on the green dropping his ball there

B) Bert may take relief on the green but must place his ball on the green.

C) Bert must take relief on the green but must drop his ball on the green.

Our annual Wine Dinner is back! This time with Wicks Wines.

The original farm was purchased in the Adelaide Hills by LJ Wicks in 1918, where he planted the family fruit orchards and nursery.

In 1999 the Wicks Family purchased the property they now call home. It was Wicks Estate's unique aspects, premium vineyard sites and diversity of its terrain that encouraged the family to venture into the world of cool climate wine.

Fast forward 20+ years and the vineyards are pretty spectacular!

Wicks Estate has evolved into a true family affair and being an Estate means they can oversee and process all of the grapes that come off the vineyard on-site.

Mark Pitt

Over the years Long Reef has had many thousands of members. Some stay for a long period, some come and go quickly - the turn-over is remarkable. There are life long golfers and part-timers, good players and hackers, die-hard Northern Beaches locals and imports from all over the country.

club imageOne such local is Mark Pitt. Pitty, as he is known, was born in Delmar Maternity Hospital at Dee Why in 1961. He was educated first at St. Joseph's Primary School at Narrabeen and completed his education at St. Augustine's College at Brookvale.

After leaving school he took up a career with the National Bank of Australasia where he stayed for 30 years. Mark's work took him to many different places, both here and overseas and despite playing social golf he didn't really take up the game seriously until 1990 when he joined Port Moresby Golf Club in Papua New Guinea. It was here that he won his first Monthly Medal.

He returned to Australia in 1992 and found a golfing home at Long Reef when he joined the Club in 1993. His golfing career at the Club has many highlights. Mark's name appears on the Hole-in-One board on three occasions. It appears that he took a particular liking to the 13th hole! In less than two years he "aced" the hole three times.

He has won both the Founders Cup and the Presidents Cup, and has won five monthly medals. When the Club decided to award Medals in each grade, he became the first ever winner of the B Grade Medal.

Mark has always been a strong Clubman and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1998-99. He is also a staunch supporter of the relationship the Club has with Goulbourn Golf Club, and is leading the effort to compile a record, collect memorabilia and a written history of the event for the benefit of both Clubs. He is a regular traveller to Goulburn and plays the matches at Long Reef each year. During the recent pandemic, it appeared the tradition might be put on hold. Rather than let this happen, Mark with five fellow members travelled to Goulburn and played the match against six Goulburn members. The after game celebration were held at a local pub as the Golf Club House was closed. The story of the 'Covid 12" was born.

He was also a founding member of the Arfa Mungrel Golf Club group. In keeping with his professional career he was the original Finance Manager and remained in the position until Ian Saville retired to the Gold Coast when Pitty took over the mantle of "Chief Mungrel"

Mark left the bank and worked in Strata Management for ten years with Mason & Brophy. He is still active in the community with ties to DYRSL where he has served on the Board of Directors for 20 years.

He is now fully retired and enjoys his golf, playing with old friends on a regular basis.

Answer:

C is correct. Rule 19 applies In taking relief for an unplayable ball

In taking Lateral Relief the Reference point is the original position of the ball.

The relief area must be within 2 club-lengths of the reference point, and must not be nearer the hole than the reference point.

The Relief Area may be in any area of the course (Rule 19.2C).

In Rule 19 Unplayable Ball there are no provisions for placing  a ball because relief is being taken on the green
