Question:

Michael had hit his third stroke onto the 15th green on a typical windy day. His ball had finished 3 metres past the pin on the top level of the green.

He  stroked his putt a little strongly and to his amazement, his putt missed the hole and continued to run down the hill finishing in a greenside bunker. He decided to take stroke and distance penalty and replay his stroke for a penalty of one stroke from the green at his previous spot.

Which is correct?

A) Michael's only option is to replay a stroke out of the bunker back onto the green. Stroke and Distance is not an option in this situation.
B) Michael may lift his ball from the bunker and return to the green for a penalty of one stroke under stroke and distance. He must drop his ball on its previous spot.
C) Michael may lift his ball from the bunker and return to the green for a penalty of one stroke under stroke and distance. He must place his ball on its original spot on the green.

Easter Trading Hours

A reminder that our trading hours are a bit shorter over the Easter Long Weekend.

The cafe will be closed for Dinner Service on Good Friday (18 April) and the kitchen will close at 3pm on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

We will recommence normal trading hours on Tuesday 22 April and we'll be open as usual for dinner on Friday 25 April (Anzac Day).

Our Annual Wine Dinner is Back! This time with Wicks Wines.

The original farm was purchased in the Adelaide Hills by LJ Wicks in 1918, where he planted the family fruit orchards and nursery.

In 1999 the Wicks Family purchased the property they now call home. It was Wicks Estate's unique aspects, premium vineyard sites and diversity of its terrain that encouraged the family to venture into the world of cool climate wine.

Fast forward 20+ years and the vineyards are pretty spectacular!

Wicks Estate has evolved into a true family affair and being an Estate means they can oversee and process all of the grapes that come off the vineyard on-site.

Pennants and Grade Teams

The Club has a long history of playing Grade and Pennant matches but it can be said that especially in the early years it certainly battled above its weight. There is a certain special pride in the fact that the men remained in the top division for so long.

The men are yet to win a major Pennant. Until 1948 when Junior membership commenced the teams were made up of only adults members. It also took until 1968 for the Associates to win a Division 1 Grade 2 competition. There were however two early B-Grade wins, one for the women in 1929 and one for the men in 1933.

In 1921 the Club was the new kid on the block and a private/public 9-hole course at that. It is second on the peninsula in age to Manly (a private club). As is the nature of things is wasn't enough for members after the club started in 1921 to meet and only play casually and socially. The Club registered with the two Golf Associations, and named the club's colours. Club Championships were created by 1923. There were many enthusiastic young golfers in their 20s who already knew the pennant system having been involved with Manly, mainly as caddies. Long Reef was keen to be included but all games had to be away games because the Club was not an 18-hole course and it was not allowed by the Golf Associations to host.

There is no doubt that the club has had some brilliant and successful individual star players. Perhaps we didn't have the depth in the teams in those early years. As we look at the summary of the Club's representation at State level in a list provided by the NSW Golf Association we can see two stars of the 20s - Wally Smith who won the Champion of Champions in 1930 and played for Australia against New Zealand and Enid Yeldham who was a home grown high-achiever who won the 1929 NSW Championship. Her membership at Long Reef was brief. She moved on the next year to become a highly successful member of Manly.

club image

The women of Long Reef can thank Ann Hutchison of Manly, for improving our knowledge of the history of women's (associates) pennants. She took on the challenge of listing every team member who has played in women's matches at Manly both home and away and the lists and team photos have been placed in books. We may not have team lists of our own going that far back but Ann did and she knew that at the GNSW offices there was a LGU B-Grade Shield with Long Reef's name on it as winners in 1929!

club image

A visit to the GNSW offices gave the Archive Committee the chance to photograph the shield and study old copies of Golf in Australia. (The photo of Miss Brodziak was found  in one of the ledgers that day.)

The squad in 1929 was made up of 14 names with 7 needed for a match. The names are - Miss Carney, Miss Enid Jones, Miss Robison, Mrs David, Miss Brown, Mrs Ewington, Mrs Macinnes, Mrs Kenyon, Miss Angel, Mrs Miller, Mrs McGuiness, Miss Moore, Miss Kearney and Mrs Le Messurier.

club image

There is no team photo of that Associates win but we do own a framed photo of the Men's B-Grade win in 1933 usually on display in the Men's locker room (presently in the Bar). Note the buttoned-up shirts and ties. All but one player is wearing a jacket and several have created the plus-four look by putting the bottoms of their trousers into their long socks. Keith Paterson had become a committee member in 1932 and served as the Treasurer for 14 years until 1949. John Hathaway became Club Captain in 1946 for three years and then one of three Vic-Presidents in 1949.

This seems to be the men's first team success when winning the B-Grade in the 1933 Premierships in the Northern Metropolitan competition. Long Reef had become an 18-hole course from 1931, officially opening the extra holes in 1932.

club image

So there we were in 1929 before the Harbour Bridge was opened and the 'new' Roseville bridge constructed, with LRGC's Associates team going off to play the likes of The Lakes, Bonnie Doon, Royal Sydney, the Australian, Killara and Manly.

In 1933 the Men's B-Grade victory was against Pennant Hills, Avondale, North Brighton, The Australian and Killara.

The competition continues!

 Sandra Mellowes

Answer: C is correct. It is his best option within the rules.

Rule 14.6 Making the Next Stroke From Where the Previous Stroke Was Made applies in this situation, because the previous stroke was made from the putting green.

Rule 14.6C applies. The original ball or another ball must be placed on the spot where the previous stroke was made(which if not known must be estimated).

After placing his ball Michael would be playing his 6.th stroke.
