Golfing Highlights
The great scores have continued over the last fortnight with 43 points or seven better than your handicap required to win overall.

In fact a countback was required to settle "Score of the Day" on Monday 18th October with David Churchley edging out Bill Inglis after both had 43 points. Fortunately David won B Grade and Bill still won C Grade. Andrew Daddo was the A Grade winner that day when his 37 points beat three others after a countback.

Wednesday 27th was a Par event and Rick Christensen had what he described at the presentation as "the best round of his life" when his +7 took out B Grade and "Score of the Day". He also won the 4BBB with his regular playing partner, Scott Irwin. Spare a thought for Phil Moss who had +6 to finish runner-up in B Grade. Phil may have marginally lost out in his grade but he did have family bragging rights (always more mileage in them!!) after his Dad. David won C Grade but only with +4!! Craig Mott rounded out the winners when his +5 was too good for the rest of A Grade. Congratulations go to Ian Brown who won Scratch with a 2 under par round.

Saturday 23rd October saw consistently good scoring with 37 Men and 2 Ladies playing to their handicap or better. Kyle Turner took out B Grade with 42 points and beat Jimmy Little and John Carroll to "Score of the Day" after a countback. Unfortunately for John both he and Jimmy were in the same grade as Jimmy won the countback for A Grade. Whilst he had mixed fortunes on the countback front, Jimmy's luck was definitely out because after shooting 3 under off the stick, Luke Edgell had another excellent round of 5 under par (his second in a couple of weeks) to take out Scratch. Mark Stevens was the winner in C Grade with 39 points.

Emma Thurlow also had 39 points in winning the Ladies competition.

There's going to be another apology from me later in this section but I'll get one out of the way now- the 4BBB that day was won by Jimmy Little and I (another countback went his way!!) after we and Derek Johanson and Greg Bourke both had 50 points. My apology is not to them but it is for all the times that I have said that it is impossible for two low markers to win the 4BBB- won't say it again, promise!

Sunday 24th October saw nine out of the top ten places filled by Men but the one Lady to feature took out the top spot as Marilyn Denner beat Kim Cook on a countback after both had 41 points.

Monday 25th October was also a Par event and +7 was again the "Score of the Day". Both Rod Adams and Barry Barclay achieved that excellent score but Rod won the countback for both C Grade and the overall. Jock Kennedy with +5 rounded out the places in C Grade. Max Rennix was the B Grade winner with +4 which was also the score that saw Lewie Meakins win A Grade.

43 points was again the magic number on Wednesday 27th October which enabled Andrew Jenkins to win B Grade and "Score of the Day", while Mick McKerihan shot even par for 41 points in winning A Grade and John Masters had 42 points to win C Grade.

So here comes the second apology (and hopefully last, for a while!).

You don't need to know the background to the problem we had with the aggregate scoring that day but I will stress that it was an issue that we caused and not any fault of the MiClub system - we set the competition of the day up incorrectly. Having identified early that we had a problem, we should have done a better job of communicating how to enter the scores into the app. I apologise for the confusion and can only assure you that we now know the sequence required when setting up multiple competitions and by the time you are reading this, we will have proven that because Saturday 30th will see a single Stableford and 2ball aggregate combination repeated.

Stop press
Saturday went fine, particularly for Alan Morisset and John Steuart who managed a combined 84 points, beating second place by 12 points!

Alan won C Grade with 44 points but unfortunately for John, his 40 points only managed to get him the runner-up spot in B Grade because Lindsay Bates had 42 points to take that out. Les Browne was the A Grade winner with 40 points. Jane Hagan won the Ladies competition with 38 points and Chun-Ta Wu won Scratch with a level par round.

I started the "Highlights" section with a 43 point score and I'll finish it with one. Last Sunday, Mark O'Connell achieved that to reverse the result from the previous Sunday. This time he won the competition with Ladies having the next 6 best scores. 1-1 Men vs Ladies over the fortnight!

Hole-in-One
Monday 25th October saw Steve Hill achieve the ultimate "bounce-back". After a double bogey at the first, he holed his tee shot on the 2nd - that's how to be level par after two!! Congratulations Steve

Club Championship and Grade Cups
Priority access entry into the first two rounds close today (Wednesday 3rd) so if you haven't already done so, I suggest you submit your entry form, with payment quickly as spaces are limited. The timesheet with any remaining available spots will open next Monday 8th at 6pm.

Major Pennant
Sunday 21st November has been confirmed now for the second leg of our relegation play-off match with Pymble. The first leg was tied so we must win to remain in Division 1.

Long Reef Senior Medal
This will be held as a shotgun start at 1pm on Monday 22nd November. If you are a Male Member, age 55 or over on the day of the Medal and with a handicap of 18 or less, you are eligible to enter. Please see the Members News for all the details and entry form.

It all happened on the back nine for the Masters
After holding a winning position at the turn in their semi-final, at Kogarah against Liverpool last Sunday, our Masters Pennant Team unfortunately came up short again in their quest to reach the final for the first time. In the end, going down 5-3. Thank you to John Steuart and Billy Watson for coming out to watch on Sunday and to Mick Snell for his ongoing support of all the Club's representative Teams. Thank you to Ian Brown for his Captaincy of the side and to all the players. We will take that next step soon!!

Checking and submitting scores
There have been a few incorrect scores entered into the MiScore app over the last couple of weeks so please cross check with your designated marker before pressing "submit agreed score". If you do notice an error after submitting the score, you have 15 minutes to attend the Pro Shop in person to have the score corrected.

Rakes in bunkers
Now that we have returned to normal bunker play, please remember to rake the bunker every time and return the rake to the middle of the bunker, facing in the direction of play. Thanks

Enjoy your golf!

From the Women's Committee

Thursday 28th October was our 1st presentation back after lockdown. Thank you to everyone who stayed for the presentation. There were 99 players in total for the 18 and 9 holes comps and it was great to see so many players out on the course and also in the Clubhouse afterwards.

Please remember to enter you name on the sheets in the locker room or email ladies@lrgc.com.au by Thursday 4th November if you would like to play in the Weekday Premiership qualifying rounds on 11th and 18th November. If you can only play one of the rounds you can still play but please let the committee know beforehand.

Thursday 11th November is the 1st round of qualifying for the weekday premiership, which is played on 11th and the 18th and there will be a sheet in the proshop asking if you would like to qualify. If you qualify, the final stroke round is on Thursday 25th November. You must enter your name BEFORE you play on November 11th if you want to qualify. Course Report

As the Course staff return to a normal working week following split shifts throughout the lockdown, there has been a great opportunity to complete some projects.

  • Drainage works in problem bunkers are ongoing and following heavy downfalls in mid-October, it was pleasing to see the repaired bunkers draining sufficiently. The image is of a drainage line being installed from the 12th fairway bunker to the drainage pit.
  • The large lomandra overhanging the left greenside bunker on the 13th hole has been removed.
  • The mound to the right of the chipping green has been reduced in height and target greens are being created. This will enhance the practice facility and also be used as nursery turf for our couch tees.

Friday Club | Pat Ford wins the Cup

A star-studded field gathered for the sporting event of the year and the crowd was abuzz with excitement and anticipation. After the frustration of what seemed an interminable lockdown, sporting enthusiasts flocked to the course to take part in a gala event.

Readers could be excused for thinking we're referring to some international event at a racecourse, say, Flemington, but in fact we're referring to the event of the year, the Friday Club Golf Championship played at legendary Long Reef Golf Club.

This year a hot field assembled for the running of the championship. And, by hot, I mean everybody was hot (it was 34 degrees!) but there were some fancied runners there too.  The smiling assassin, Neville Crealy was a popular pick, while Ross Guignon was in rare form.

There were whispers that dashing Doug Mansfield had been seen practicing and more rumours that last year's winner, yours truly, might be worth a flutter (I started those rumours myself!). The irrepressible Sally Hill and classy Valerie Wilson headed the ladies' challenge, while Wayne Grundy, a refugee from the wrong side of Spit Bridge, was also in rare form. Expecting photo-opportunities later on, Wayne had a haircut and beard trim especially for the event.

In the end, it was another golfer from the dodgy side of Spit Bridge who triumphed.

Enter Patrick Ford, our international man of mystery: a financial genius toying with the markets some days, and a superhero struggling to change into his lycra leotard, in a phonebox, on others (it's not that easy!).

Pat has just been allowed to return to Long Reef after being in lockdown in Mosman. This was possibly not as bad as it sounds. Our new champion was married only six months ago, so the enforced confinement would have allowed him plenty of time to open the wedding presents and write the thankyou notes.

Very elegant would be one way to describe Patrick. He hits a long, straight, ball and his course management is excellent. He's also a master strategist. In order to make a memorable return to the Friday Club, he joined Royal Balgowlah Golf Club (within his LGA ) to fine tune his game.

Pat won the Friday Club Championship with a spanking 81 off the stick for a net 66 strokes and, in so doing, his became the 50th name to be engraved on our historic solid silver trophy.

Despite a mini-heart attack on the 17th, where Pat had a rather ugly seven (could have been eight!), he had two strokes to spare over 2014 champion, Peter Burke. Pete put together a make-you-smile round of 84, for a net 68, while plucky Ross Guignon rewarded the each-way punters with third place, two shots away.

Congratulations to our championship winners and place getters.

(Readers please note: no golfers were injured in the running of this event.)

In the weekly competition, new kid on the block Doug McGrath, having taken all the cookies in the division two cookie jar just two weeks ago, did the same thing to the serious golfers in division one with a rather nifty net 73 strokes.

Division two this week was won by Paul Garrod with a very smart 71 and Sally McHugh-Warner had too much style and flair for everybody else in division three and took bragging rights with a neat 73.

Despite the rather testing conditions we had 86 starters last Friday, an excellent result and members will be delighted to know that we'll be back to stableford games for the rest of the year.

Perry Yeldham | Friday Club President

Rules With George | Question

On the 18th hole, Noel had hit his tee shot to the middle of the practice area. He found his ball which was in a good lie. He played the ball towards the green but unfortunately it was too strong and ended  beyond the green, out of bounds.

Which is correct?

A) Noel is required or may choose  to take stroke and distance relief playing again in relation to where he played his ball, which ended out of bounds.  He must drop a ball within one club-length of where he played his previous stroke,  in the penalty  area, with a penalty of one stroke.

B) Noel is not permitted by  the Rules of Golf  to play again from within the penalty area. He must take relief outside the penalty area under Rule 17. at a point related to where his last stroke, entering the penalty area crossed its margin, under Rule 17.1 d or 17.2.

Champions - 20's, 30's and 40's

To look for the men's golfing legends of the 20's, 30's and into the 40's we need to go no further than Gordon Thomson and Wally Smith. Between 1928 and 1951 (the championships were not played from 1940-45), the names G. Thomson and W.R. Smith appear 15 times on the Club Champion Honour Board, and we don't know who would have finished as runner-up on other occasions. Gordon was the all-time Club Champion at this stage with his ten wins but both men's achievements can be seen in a wide range of events.

Gordon from a golf loving family (two brothers were club professionals) and with experience first gained as a caddy at Manly Golf Club had joined Long Reef in 1926. He won his first Long Reef Championship in 1928 at the age of 22 and he repeated this championship achievement nine more times before he left the Club in 1952. He contested Australian Amateur titles and was a consistent leading Member of the A-Grade pennant team. In 1933 he broke the Club record on three occasions, including twice in one day. His name can be seen on the present Course Record Board for a score of 70 in 1949. He also won the club Foursomes on three occasions. He served on the Club Committee in the 30's.

W.R. Smith, Wally, had also joined the Club in 1926 after his time as a caddy at Manly and two years as a member and an A-Grade team player at Moore Park. In 1927 he was runner-up in the NSW's title to Eric Apperly and held the course record at Long Reef of 66. In 1929 he played for the NSW team to tour New Zealand. His first Long Reef Championship title was in 1929 and he repeated the win for the next three years.  In 1930 he won the Champion of Champions. As well as his five other Club Championship wins, he won the Long Reef Medal in 1931 and again in 1954 at the age of 50. He played in the Long Reef A-Grade team for 25 years, most of them as team Captain. He was a most efficient Handicapper, Board member and Club Captain. He was made a Life Member in 1957.

The Foursomes Championships commenced in 1934 and the name Cecil Esdaile can be seen as the most prolific winner before and immediately after the war years. He too had been a caddy at Manly and joined the Club at the age of 21. He played for the Grade team from 1933 and won the Club Championship in 1939. In the 40's and into the 50's he spent three years on the Club Committee, one year as Captain and three as President. He died in 1955 at the age of 46.

In 1923 before these men arrived at the club a raw beginner Enid Yeldham, (to become Clements) joined Long Reef along with her parents. She arrived like a whirlwind. She had lessons from Tom Popperwell (Professional at Cammeray from 1921 and Mosman from 1930) who described her as "a young champion who drives like a man." She took out the Long Reef Championship in 1927 and was runner-up in the 1928 NSW Championships. By this time, she had also joined other clubs. After her 1929 NSW Championship win, playing off a handicap of 1, she listed her home Clubs as The Australian and Cammeray. She soon joined Manly to be known as the legendry Mrs Clements. She remained a Member of Long Reef until 1932.

In 1936 Long Reef member, former Captain and contributor to "Golf in Australia" William Whytock said "I consider her to be the nearest approach I ever saw in Australia to the best English lady golfers."

The only other Associate Champions, other than Heather Harmon mentioned in the last article that we have been able to discover over these three decades are Helen Maclean in 1932, Kay Withers in 1938 and Betty Ferguson in 1949.

Next time ... In 1940 Ruby Watts (also member of Palm Beach) had arrived at the Club only to have to pause her Membership because of the war. Des Lofthouse arrived in 1950 and so began the era of two other very special champions.

Rules With George | Answer

A) is correct.. Rule 18 permits a player to take stroke and distance relief: "No matter where the player's ball is on the course".

Rule 17.3 prohibits taking relief for a ball in a Penalty Area in only three situations..

  • Interference by an  abnormal course condition (Rule 16.1).
  • An embedded ball (Rule 16.3)
  • An unplayable ball (Rule 19).

If Noel had dropped his ball and then decided not to play the dropped ball from where it came to rest, he may take further relief outside the penalty area, for an additional penalty stroke, a total of two penalty strokes; one stroke for stroke and distance relief and one stroke for taking relief outside the penalty area.

Rule 17. 2 b applies  (Full Rules of Golf).
