REEF BREEZES

Wednesday 17 November 2021

Dear KIM,

From the Captain

Club Championship and Grade Cups

Saturday threw up some tricky conditions with the wind blowing non-stop all day and for the majority of the field, the scoring reflected that. You obviously can't win it after one round so it was all about hanging in and limiting the damage, in particular over the closing holes.

Last year's Club Champion, Luke Edgell and the evergreen Ross Bockman share the lead in the Championship having both shot rounds of 73, to have them one shot ahead of Chun-Ta Wu. Ross and Chun-Ta have the halfway lead in the Senior and Junior Championships respectively.

In A Reserve, Terry Hill leads the way with 79, one shot ahead of Peter Dawson with Chris Yates and Adam Elliott both a further shot back. Mick Harding, with an excellent round of 82, has taken an early 4 shot lead from Damien Moore and 5 over Chris Mitchell in B Grade while Scott Irwin leads C Grade after his round of 90 has him one ahead of John Steuart and Michael McNee.

Good luck to everybody for the second round this Saturday - after which the top 15 in each Grade will make the cut and progress to rounds 3 and 4.

Josie Garrett leads the Women's Weekend Premiership after her round of 85 gives her a 4 shot lead over Kimbalee Sloane.

November Medal

This was played in conjunction with the first round of the Championship and Grade Cups and Damien Moore had the "score of the daĆ½" after a countback with Mick Harding when both finished with nett 67 and won the Medal for B Grade- poor Mick was in B Grade too!! At least he has the lead in the B Grade Cup!!

Peter Dawson won the Medal in A Grade after a countback when he and Ross Bockman both finished with nett 70 while Scott Irwin won C Grade with nett 68.

Josie also won the Women's Medal with nett 74.

Midweek Strokeplay Cup

If it was a Par week a couple of weeks ago, it was Strokeplay week, last week!

Ian Brown leads the way in A Grade after a 1 under par round of 70 last Wednesday, which has him two ahead of Ross Bockman, with Ross Kocass a further shot back. Ian Brown and Ross Kocass share the lead in the nett event with both scoring 68s

Paul Quill leads both the gross and nett competitions in B Grade after shooting 81 off the stick for a nett 63. Both Greg Bourke and Derek Johanson shot 82 gross and both had nett 66.

Michael McNee leads C Grade after shooting 89, 4 ahead of David Costello OAM with 4 others on 95. He also holds a 3 shot lead in the nett event from three others.

Correction

In the last Newsletter, the C Grade result for Wednesday 20th October was incorrect so I'd like to take this opportunity to rectify that and give Kevin Stanton the recognition he deserved for his winning score of +5

Other notable scores-

  • Christian Eberhardt - 40 points (Tuesday 9th)
  • Gareth Jones (42) and Phil Ton-That (41) on Monday 8th
  • Kalen Kennedy and Simon Jones  both had +6 on Sunday 7th
  • Saturday 6th saw Gordon Philp win A Grade with 42 points and Scott Matyus-Flynn win B grade with 41.
  • Clint Sulway - 41 points (Wednesday 3rd)

The best scores of the fortnight came on Melbourne Cup Day when Mitch Cleary won with 45 points while Ralph Harpur and Greg McHugh both had 44 points.

On Monday 1st Gary Milsted beat Gary Pethybridge for "score of the day" after a countback when they both had 43 points, one ahead of Phil To-That, Michael Eustace and Philip Gors.

Practice fairway

If you haven't played in the last week, please check on the website or see the Local Rules board to be aware of the changes to the playing conditions from the practice fairway area.

Long Reef Senior Medal

Entries are now closed but good luck to all our Members that are trying to win this event next Monday afternoon. It would be great to have a home win in our Centenary year!

Major Pennant

Just a reminder that the second leg of relegation play-off takes place this Sunday (21st) at Pymble Golf Club with a 7am start for anybody that would like to come along and support the Team. The playing order is yet to be decided but we will be represented by Luke Edgell, Chun-Ta Wu, Cam Gillespie, Cian Hughes, Ian Brown, Ryan Farrell and myself.

Enjoy your golf!

Dallas Winnem

It was with great sadness we received the news last week that Dallas Winnem passed away after a decade long battle with breast cancer.

Dallas joined Long Reef in 2010 and proceeded to attack golf with the same enthusiasm and joy that she approached every aspect of her life.  Alternating golf, treatments and surgery she played through the next few years improving her golf swing and enjoying the camaraderie that the Long Reef Girls are renowned for. She loved the sport; she loved her golf course and she loved being a Member of the Long Reef Girls.

In 2013 she was a Member of the very successful Bronze 4 Interclub Pennant team which bought home the pennant and she also played in that team in 2014 and 2015.

However, 2015 was the winning year for her. Dallas won the Long Markers Trophy and the Scherrie Hughes Plate and was in the team that had the best score at Long Reef for the Golf NSW Bowl entry. Dallas was Field Captain of the Bronze 4 Team that year and won the best and fairest for that team.

Dallas helped with our Charity Fundraisers and loved our Christmas Fun Days.

Unfortunately, sickness struck again and Dallas had another of her many stints in hospital and was unable to return to playing golf although she remained a member through to 2021, lunching on Thursdays when she could.

Dallas will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and that uncanny knack of making everyone she met feel special. She would say: 'Smile because you can.' And that she certainly did.

Our lives have all been enriched by her friendship and we will all be forever grateful that our paths crossed with the beautiful Dallas Winnem.

Our sincere condolences and love to her husband Mick and children Max and Bronte.

Friday Club

Cape Diem (Seize the Day)

"Veni, vidi, viki", as any historian or reluctant student forced to learn Latin, could tell you means: "I came, I saw, I conquered". The words were uttered by Julius Caesar, or so his publicist tells us, whenever he won a battle in Europe (which was quite often). It was the Roman form of bragging in the Golf Club Members' bar.

However, there's no record of the great conqueror reciting his famous phrase when he invaded Britain at the end of summer in 55BC.

This was possibly because, as wins go, the win in Albion was pretty marginal (code for a stuff-up). But it was his first attempt, the weather was lousy and his opponents were all blue (either painted with woad or, more likely, just blue with cold).

Caesar's army landed in Kent, got soaked to the skin because they forgot to take umbrellas, marched inland, beat up a few of the natives, got drunk on Kentish cider and then, when the weather turned really nasty, they went back home and claimed a win (on a countback).

More recently (last week) a newcomer emerged from the mist on our golf course, like a hero from a Boys' Own Adventure storybook, to take on the blue army of the Friday Club and, unlike Caesar, this combatant had a resounding victory.

Robert Cordaiy, in his first Friday Club foray, returned the top score of the day and what a score it was!  Playing off a handicap of five, Rob returned a jaw-dropping 41 points, having parred the course. A level par round in Friday Club hasn't happened since ... since the Romans invented central heating on their return home from Britain.

Of course, Robert, who sports a similar haircut to the great Caesar (centre parting, barely discernible), used Roman precision to conquer his opponents.  While regular Friday Club players like to use both sides of their fairway (sometimes both sides of the adjacent fairway) and take extra care with their third putts, our newcomer did no such thing.

Rules With George | Question

Question: Playing the fifteenth hole, on a dry very windy day, Tony hit his ball onto the green for three strokes. His ball was about 4 metres from the hole. He did not mark or lift his ball but began preparing to putt it. As he bent down behind the ball looking at the line of his putt, his ball suddenly was blown by a very strong gust of wind and started to roll. It rolled right to the hole and fell in.

Which of the following is correct?

A)  Tony must retrieve and replace his ball and putt it. He will then have played four strokes

B)  Tony has holed out.His score for the hole  will be three strokes.

C)  Tony must add a penalty of one stroke and his score will be four.

D)  Tony must add the general penalty of 2 strokes . His score will be five.

Champions - 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's

As the challenge to crown our Centenary Champions in 2021 continues we remember early great Champions. It is hoped that many of our current members can recall them.

Throughout the 50s and 60s and just into the 70s we see the achievements of our super Champion of all time!! Les Lofthouse joined the club in 1950. He came from Stockton Golf Club. He was in the army nearby and was then stationed at North Head in Manly.

His framed photo is on permanent display in the club. Between 1953 and 1974 his name appears on the Club Championship honour board a record 12 times. Such was the amount of time and effort that he put into his golf he could be described as a professional amateur. Those who played against him describe his almost unbeatable aura. He also won the Foursomes on 9 occasions and with partner Ruby Watts became the Mixed Foursomes winner in 1957 the first year that it was held. He won a further three times. He played in the NSW Metropolitan Team, won the NSW Mixed Foursomes in 1954 with Val King and represented the club in Pennants for 27 seasons. Des was made a Life Member in 1980 for his service to the club as a player and mentor.

Des won only one title in the 70s as the wins were spread across a wider field of 6 other names. The most successful was Rodney Hayes with 4 Championships in total from 1968-77

A very regular name on the Men's Foursomes list was Eddie Robinson with 9 wins.

Ruby Watts is not the holder of the most Associate/Women's Club Championship titles, but is the Champion at this time across the combination of titles. To her 7 Club Championships we can add 9 Foursomes wins, and 2 Mixed Foursomes. She qualified for the NSW Championships on two occasions and played Grade for the club for 25 years. Under her captaincy Long Reef won the A-Grade in 1968, and again in 1970 at the time thought to be the club's first grade win male or female.

Image Above: A Team of Champions - Championship dates in brackets. The winning A Grade Team in 1968

 M Greacen / J. Machar (1976) / R. Haire (1990)
J. Nott / R. Watts c (1950, 53, 54, 55, 56, 58, 59) /
D. Fouracre (1957,61,64, 65,66,67,68,68) / E. Akehurst / E. Maxwell (1970,71,74,) / B. Backous / B. McLean (1972) / M. Glasson.

Ruby certainly didn't have it all her own way and her run in the Club Championships was over by 1959. She was challenged by the young gifted player Val King in the early 50s who won two Club Championships and Val was the first Long Reef Associate to be selected for the NSW Senior team in 1954.  She was the NSWLGU Silver Salver winner in 1958 following success at NSW level in 1954 partnering Des Lofthouse in the NSW Mixed Foursomes as mentioned above. She also won the NSW Associates Foursomes on three occasions before retiring from golf in the early 60s.

In the 60s there are only two Associate Champions to acknowledge, because between them the two player's wins cover the full ten years. Mary Langdale had her 3 titles, with Dulcie Fouracre making a clean sweep for the rest of the decade. With an earlier win in 1957 Dulcie remains the Clubs highest scoring Associates/Women's Champion with 8 wins.  In contrast the 70s saw as many as seven new Champions listed. (See Honour Boards).

Rules With George | Answer

B) is correct.. Tony has scored a three. His ball was moved by natural forces such as wind or water.

There is no penalty and the ball must be played from its new spot. Because his ball is already

in the hole he cannot play another stroke, so his score is three.

If his ball on the putting green had been moved by wind after Tony had already lifted and replaced it on the spot from which it moved, the ball must be replaced on its original spot and Tony would be required to play his fourth stroke. If the original spot was not known it must be estimated. Rule 9.3 applies.
