REEF BREEZES

Wednesday 15 December 2021

Dear IAN,

From your Board

Cocktail Party

On Thursday 2 December we celebrated our end of year Cocktail Party. The night celebrated the beginning of the festive season and was also the last major event in our Centenary year. The Cocktail Party is unique to LRGC, in that I know of no other golf club that hosts a free night for its Members each year to celebrate Christmas and the end of the golfing year.

For many it is an opportunity to catch up with friends but this year we had many new Members and their partners attend and it is great to see so many new faces.

Thank you to Ben, Alex, Toni and the team for the effort to making this night so memorable.

I am going to make special mention to our head chef Michael Mulquinny. This year has been extremely difficult with staff shortages due to the pandemic. . Michael and his team  have been

working long hours and I am constantly amazed at the presentation of such wonderful food. Their efforts, skills and cheerfulness make every event at Long Reef special - thank you.

On the night I omitted to make mention of 2 apologies for the night - Jason Falinski our Federal Member and Doug Campbell our Club Captain, whose daughter was being married the next day at Berry.

As this will be the last newsletter for the year on behalf of the Board, I would like to wish all Members and their families, a very merry Christmas and more optimistically, a great new year, filled with success, happiness and good health.

Stephen Twigg | President

From the Captain

 NSW Junior Championship-

After a delay of 6 months due to COVID restrictions, this 4 Stroke rounds event went ahead last week at Lynwood Golf Club. Our newly crowned Club Champion, Chun-Ta Wu did extremely well, finishing 3rd in his Under 16 age group (only 3 shots behind the local winner) and tied for 12th overall, with rounds of 71.69.76 and a closing 73, for an overall +1 score.

Harry McKerihan finished a credible 8th in his Under 15 age group and tied 37th overall, averaging only 4 over par across the rounds.

 NSW Senior Order of Merit-

Congratulations to Geoff Cranfield who topped the Nett Leaderboard over the entire season. Geoff won twice and finished 5th overall on the Gross Leaderboard.

 Captain's Trophy-

Saturday 4th was the December Medal and the Captain's Trophy is awarded to the best Nett score of the day. There were three excellent 66s in A Grade but after a countback, Tony Holley was the 2021 winner, from Cam Gillespie and Soren Norgaard. Congratulations Tony!

Major Trophies-

With the extended lockdown putting paid to some of the events and others being presented at the time of them being played, the decision was made to cancel the 2021 Major Trophy Presentation afternoon but the winners of the events that were completed were as follows:-

Mixed Foursomes Champions- Jenni Brown and Ian Brown (for the third year in a row)

Mixed Foursomes Cup - Jie Cheng and Denis Watchorn

Barling Trophy - Matt Pook

Whytock Cup - Stephen Rowe

Hudson Shield - Colin Thomas

Founders Cup - Chun-Ta Wu

President's Cup - James Dean

Strokeplay Cup - Chun-Ta Wu, John Carroll (A Reserve), Glen Brown (B Grade) and Barry Murray (C Grade), Tanya Heber (Women)

Midweek Strokeplay - Andrew Kim, Peter Munro (B Grade) and John Crowley (C Grade)

4BBB - Rick Christensen and Scott Irwin

Left Hander's Trophy - Anthony Dignan

Centenary Cup - Peter French

Congratulations to all and your winnings have been added to your voucher account.

"Once, Twice, Three times a Lady"-

If you need any tips on how to play the 2nd hole, I suggest you go and ask Tanya Heber. Tanya won "Nearest the Pin" on the 2nd, three days in a row - Saturday 4th, Sunday 5th and Monday 6th. Well played Tanya...some of us don't win NTP three times in total!!!

 Other Notable Scores-

Wednesday 1st December- Shane Parsons won A Grade with 43 points with Craig Mott 2nd with 41 and Phil White 3rd with 39. In B Grade, James Kirby was the winner with 39 points, one ahead of Lindsay Bates with Mark Pitt a further point back in third. Peter Carson took out C Grade with his 41 points, with Greg Bourne beating Peter West after a countback when they both finished with 39 points. Michael Buckley & John Davison were the 4BBB winners with 49 points and Luke Edgell won Scratch with 2 under par.

Saturday 4th was the December Medal, as I mentioned earlier and after the best three scores of the day were all in A Grade, the next best was nett 67, which won Andrew Dunn the C Grade Medal. He beat Phil Hooper by two shots, with Russell Young third with 70. The Medal winner in B Grade was Jeremy Gruzman with nett 68, while George Aitken finished runner-up after a countback, when he and Peter Munro both had nett 70s. Jenni Brown took out the Women's Medal with nett 74. Luke Edgell shot 2 under for the second time in four days to win Scratch again.

Jamie Knight had "Score of the Day" on Monday 6th with 43 points, while Norman Taylor, Peter Markovic and Peter Verrills all had 41.

Knowing Wendy, her 40 points on Tuesday 7th to win the Women's comp (from Jan Hanson on a countback), will hardly rate a mention in her section, so I'd like to recognise it in mine. Well done to Wendy Thomas, the Lady Captain!

John Crowley had an excellent 44 points the same day to win the Men's comp.

Peter O'Reilly had a day to remember on Wednesday 8th. His 40 points won him B Grade, "Score of the Day" after a countback from Barry Young and Bill Chapman and he combined well with Steve Cunningham to take out the 4BBB as well with 48 points. Mark Cruise won Scratch with 1 under.

The wind blew on Saturday 11th and only two players in the entire field managed to play to their handicap - so take a bow, Peter Munro and Josh Dowse who both had 36 points with Pete winning "Score of the Day" after a countback. He also won A Grade by two points from Terry Hill and Mitch Bockman but Mitch did also win Scratch. Josh won C Grade with Sascha Plate the runner-up with 35 points. Grant Piper won B Grade after a countback with Dave Slaytor when they both finished with 34 points and that was the score with which Kate Shanks won the Women's comp. Chris Yates took out the Circle on the 8th while Graham Davies won Nearest the Pin on the 2nd and Steve Prior was closest on the 13th. Graham also combined with Glen Evans for 42 points to win the 4BBB.

 "Is it a first"?-

Please forgive my self indulgence but it's more of a dig at my opponents...When Ross Kocass and Stewart Nettleton were 5 down after 5 to Jimmy Knox and I last Wednesday, they told me that their comeback would be "Newsletter worthy". What transpired from there was that Jimmy and I won the next 5 holes as well to win our match 10&8. Now that's "Newsletter worthy"!!! None of the 4 of us had ever been involved, or knew of that scoreline being achieved before, so ïs it a first?"

 "Thank you"-

It would always be customary at this time of year to thank everybody for their hard work during what was another difficult year. The course has never looked better so "thank you" to Pete, Kurt and the rest of the fantastic Course Team. They are very ably assisted by Dad's Army (aka the Volunteer Crew) and Mick Snell and I truly appreciate the time they give up to help maintain the appearance of our course and Clubhouse surroundings. Kimberley is off getting married so best wishes to her on her special day - she has been a great addition to the Office Team and I thank her for all her assistance in pulling the Newsletter together. Events have been few and far between in 2021 but Toni's Team are back at it and 2022 will hopefully return to something more like "normal" (whatever that is!!) but they also refreshed the Clubhouse during lockdowns and inside, it has not looked better either. Thank you to Alex and his Catering / Hospitality Team that have shown great patience and flexibility during the year. Laura has exciting times ahead in 2022 with the arrival of what will be her first child so she won't be around much next year but she has assisted me greatly in the administration of all golf related activities and I thank her and wish her all the best with the birth. Thank you to Ben, who continues to grow as a General Manager for everything he has done to help me - far too much to list - and to the rest of his Team. To Cam Gillespie, my Vice Captain this last year and to the Golf Committee, thank you for your contributions and thanks to Danny and the Teed Up Team.

Finally and most importantly, this may turn out to be my last Newsletter article as Captain of Long Reef Golf Club, so, in case it is, I must finish by saying a massive "thank you" to you, the Members, for your support, encouragement and feedback over the last 2 years. It's not always been easy but it has been my absolute privilege to be your Captain.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everybody.

Thank you,

Doug Campbell | Captain

From the Staff

As we close on what has been a year of mixed emotions, the Staff at LRGC would like to wish all Members and their families a very Merry Christmas and Happy Year New Year.

2020 was spent planning for a year worth of celebrations for the Club's Centenary in 2021 and looking back we realise how lucky we were to hold the High Tea and Gala Dinner in May, only one month prior to the lockdown. I'm sure those who attended will still have long lasting memories of the evening even though it seems like it was a lifetime ago.

I would like to make two special mentions; the first being to the Members. It has been an incredibly challenging time in most people's personal lives but also navigating the bookings rules, the restrictions when attending the Club and the incredible surge in rounds played during the lockdown period. The implementation of a new booking system only days prior to the lockdown proved testing but it was refreshing to see the Members adapt to the changes (and yes, I can assure you the lottery is completely random!!!). Our inboxes were busy and so were yours from Club communication but the patience

shown towards staff, the praise for the Course conditions during limited hours of maintenance and the overall support from Members when the Clubhouse re-opened was what makes Long Reef Golf Club so great.

Secondly, to the staff. Since March 2020 our staff have been stood down or on reduced hours for up to 7 months and their resilience through this period has shone through. Whilst many hospitality venues struggled to re-open due to staffing shortages, our staff were all eager to get back to work and chip in wherever they were needed. We look forward to a brighter 2022 and welcoming some new faces to the team as hospitality makes a revival from the past two years of COVID.

Safe travels to those who are going away for Christmas and to those who are staying home, we hope to see you enjoying the Course and Clubhouse.

Ben Russell | General Manager

From the Course

It has been great weather for greenkeepers so far this summer much better than drought and fires and it is very rare to have 2 summers in a row with regular rain. The course is looking great and our dams are full, so far this year we have had 1130mm of rain which is right on average.

Strong southerly winds in the last few weeks have caused plenty of salt burn browning off all the grass especially in the rough. The salt burn acts as a natural growth retardant slowing down the growth significantly apart from visual damage and tip burn it does not cause any major problems, mowing removes the damage turning the course green again (see photo)

Changes to the practice facility have made a big difference to the whole area. We are now cutting the practice fairway at normal fairway height and we have constructed 2 landing pads at 200m and 150m we plan on finishing the next 2 pads in the new year. We also removed part of the large mound next to the practice green for safety reasons so golfers are more visible from the tee. The soil used to construct the practice fairway came from the new dam which is acid sulphate soil and quite poor quality. It is being treated regularly with lime & gypsum it is also being top-dressed with sandy loam & fowl manure. This helps but it will take time to balance the soil and grow quality grass with good colour much like the new mounds which were constructed with the same material.  Plans for early in the new year is to rebuild a number of tees the 10th members, 16th Ladies and 16th championship tees, all 3 will be rebuilt levelled and turfed using Santa Ana couch.

Have a Happy and Safe Christmas.

Rules With George | Question

Playing the eighteenth  hole Jack hit his tee shot well right and his ball finished on the Practice Fairway about 5 metres from the left hand side of the area, just past the right hand bunker on the 18th hole. He found his ball and noticed that it was  just inside the white  line marking the area as GUR.. His ball was lying in an area of Temporary Water about 10 cm deep so difficult to play.

He discussed his options with the other members of his playing group.

Which is correct?

A. He must play his ball as it lies despite the problems of the water.

B. Because his ball was in GUR he could drop it , without penalty , at the nearest point of complete relief outside the GUR, on his left..

C. He must drop the  ball in the nearest dropping zone without penalty. This  was at the  end of the Practice Area.

D. He may drop a ball within the GUR,  at the nearest point of complete relief from the Temporary Water not nearer the hole, without penalty.

Rules With George | Answer

D is correct. Jack's ball was lying in the General Area of the course with interference by the two abnormal  conditions, Temporary Water and GUR., at the same time.

Jack may elect to take relief from either .condition first.

Jack elected to take relief from the Temporary Water and drop his ball in the GUR. He then has the further option of playing his ball from the GUR or taking further relief from that condition, without penalty.

Rule 16.1, and Interpretations 16.1/2, 16.1/3 ,"Official Guide to the Rules of Golf", apply.

Because the GUR is part of the General Area there is no barrier to taking relief for Temporary Water within it.
