REEF BREEZES

Wednesday 26 January 2022

Dear KIM,

From the Vice Captain

Over the last fortnight we have seen some fantastic scores but two really do stand out. On the 15th of January we saw Kate Shanks score 44 points and win score of the day.. A huge congratulations to Kate!

Last Monday we saw something very rare at Long Reef Golf Club. Chun-Ta Wu shot an unbelievable 8 under par without a bogey. It's certainly worth a look at that kind of scorecard (pictured below). Well done, Chun-ta!

Course

Many will have noticed that the grass colour on the 16th and 10th Tees has changed, and this is due to the poisoning of the existing grass to relay couch and generally give the tees a tidy up. The tees will be laser levelled in the coming weeks prior to re-turfing and with good weather, we plan to have the tees back in play by early April.

The greens have been cored using a mini hollow core to alleviate compaction and help root growth. With these months being the busiest of the year, it is important to keep the greens as sharp as possible.

The large bunker on the 6th hole continues to be filled in as part of the bunker audit programme that has been taking place over the last 6 or so months. This remains GUR and will form part of a new layout of the right-hand side of the 6th fairway. The wet soil prevents Peter and his team from knocking the project over quickly but in time that area will be back in play.

The large(ish) small mound at the back of the 10th green has recently been reshaped to reduce its steepness. This came from the filling in on a bunker a few months ago. The area will again be GUR if your ball comes to rest between the stakes.

The practice nets behind the pro shop will be undergoing a refurbishment in early February. This will include the replacement of the netting throughout the structure and an extension to the top of the nets to stop a skied shot missing the net. The process has been delayed due to contractor shortages during COVID but will be completed in the coming weeks. It's expected that the nets will be closed for two days.

With the large number of traffic out on the course at this time of the year, it is really important to stay on top of looking after your course with us all doing a little. Please remember to repair all pitch marks (yours and another) and fill all divots (both in the rough and on the fairway) during your round. As Members, setting the standard for new and public golfers continues to be important and we encourage everyone to do their bit to keep the course looking as amazing as it does.

Harvey Norman Week of Golf

Our young Members recently played in the Harvey Norman week of Golf and another huge congratulations to Jamie Smith (pictured below) who won with scores of 75, 69, 70, 74 & 66. He birdied the first hole of the playoff to secure the win.

Major Pennant

This Sunday kicks off the NSW Major Pennant against North Ryde at home. With the tough season of 2021 behind us, we'll be looking to make our mark right from the outset with a home win. The support of the club is always wonderful to see out on the course so please come down and support the guys from 7am.

Our games are: 30th (H) & 6th v North Ryde, 13th (H) & 20th v Cromer, 27th (H) & 6th v Oatlands

Hole in Ones

The chance of making a hole in one has been documented as 12,500 to 1. Well a number of LRGC Members defied those odds in the past fortnight, with 4 hole in ones recorded since Saturday 15th January.

I don't believe it's a Long Reef first, but incredibly Ross Bockman and Mark Pitt had hole in ones on the 13th hole only a few hours apart. Then Andy O'Brien hit the perfect shot on the 7th hole on Monday 24th January followed Janet Atchison on Tuesday 25th January at the 13th hole. Congratulations to Ross, Mark, Andy and Janet. I hope the Members in the Clubhouse at the time enjoyed a free beverage

Sandra Mellowes | Life Member

At the 2021 Annual General Meeting, Sandra Mellowes was awarded Life Membership. This award is the Club's highest available award and recognises the distinguished and exceptional contribution that Sandra has made to the Club. It is fitting that as head of the Archive Committee that Life Membership was bestowed on Sandra in our Centenary Year.

Sandra joined the Club in 1984, winning many trophies and representing the Club. During this time she has also been on numerous committees including being Women's President from 2006-2008.

Her role as chair of the Archives Committee has been remarkable. The committee updated Ross Lanes' First 65 Years book and produced an eBook 'The First 100 Years of Long Reef' which can be found on the Club's website.

The historical exhibition displaying various memorabilia and history was truly incredible. It was not only highly praised by our Members but also received recognition in our State Member Brad Hazzard's newsletter to his electorate.

Sandra also contributes to each publication of the newsletter.

Sandra embodies all that that the Club represents and is a worthy recipient of Life Membership.

Rules With George | Question

Question: Glen found his ball about five centimetres behind a red stake on the first hole. He could play the ball but thought it might hit the stake and create a very dangerous situation. He carefully assessed the position of his ball and realised it was not in the penalty area so he removed the stake which was easily movable without damage to the stake.

His marker said that he could not do that because all red stakes are immovable obstructions. He replaced the stake in its original position, realised that it was interfering with his stroke so took relief within the relief area for an immovable obstruction under Rule 16.1 a. Glen played his ball safely across the penalty area.

Which is correct?

A.  Glen acted correctly so incurred no penalty for his action.

B.  Glen incurred no penalty for taking relief under the immovable obstruction situation, but incurred the General Penalty of two strokes for removing a stake which was defined as immovable in the Local Rules. The penalty applies even though he replaced the stake before taking action and playing a stroke at his ball .

From the Archives

The Secretary 1922 - Alfred Lambert

The meeting on the 28 January 1922, one hundred years ago, was an important one. As mentioned last time in the newsletter on the resignation of the Club's first Secretary John Alford, Alfred Peyronnet Lambert took over the role. His consistent influence dominated the development of the early years of the Club.

He had joined the Club in 1921 at the very first meeting. By January he was the Hon. Secretary and he was also elected the Club's first Captain at the AGM in July 1922. He held the Captain's position for just one year as the dual role was too "hectic" for him so he resigned the Captaincy. In 1924 he was nominated for and became the Club's first Life Member. (See Honour Board.)

By 1925 the Club realised what a full-time important and very busy role the Secretary had to play so he was made the first full-time paid Secretary at a salary of $6 per week. As a former teacher with his last position as Head Master of Narrabeen Primary school before he retired, he applied all his administrative and communication skills to the job.

Over an 18-year period he was there alongside Presidents Mann and Hudson and Captains Whytock, Rawnsley and then Slocombe to guide the Club through the building of the Clubhouse, the official opening, the creation of the next 9- holes to make an 18-hole course, the effects of the 1930s Depression and prepare the ground work for the Club to become a Limited Company in 1939.

The Club Members were so surprised when "Pop" (Lambert announced his retirement in 1940.  After all he had always been there!

But he said, "I am nearly eighty!" "Pop" Lambert died in July 1943. For many years right up to the '70s his memory was honoured when golfers played for the A.P. Lambert Cup." *

His framed photo appeared in the last edition of the newsletter but perhaps the 1927 cartoon below tells us a great deal about his manner and personality!

A note from the Course Team

The course team would like to offer Members free mulch. Members can fill up bags, bins, trailers or boots. Collect from the waste area behind the 11th green.

Rules With George | Answer

Answer: A. is correct.

Glen's initial action in removing the interfering immovable obstruction was a breach of Rule 8.1 a. If he had played his ball there would have been a penalty of two strokes.

When Glen replaced the stake in its original position Glen had avoided the penalty for moving the stake by applying Rule 8.1 c "Restoring Conditions Improved in Breach of Rule 8.1 a(1)".

It was fortunate that Glen was able to restore the original condition by using the original stake in its undamaged condition, otherwise the General Penalty would have applied. Having restored the initial situation Glen was entitled to look for an alternative method of seeking and obtaining relief.
