Dear IAN,

From your Vice Captain

Club Championships & Grade Cups

After a few short and sharp storms rolled through on Friday morning the sun then came out for what was a perfect weekend for golf.

Saturday was a perfect day for the 1st round of Club Championships.

A Grade saw Chun-Ta finish with 2 double bogeys on the home stretch to still finish with a great score of 1 under par 70. Luke Shahmatov carded a great round of even par and Jimmy Little not far behind with 72. The 2nd round will be interesting with 75 sitting in 8th position.

A Reserve is also a tight one with Alan Herriot and Corey Battams both shooting scores of 80. Close behind is Kerry Andrich with 81. Currently 8th position is shared amongst 5 players on 83. The top 8 in A Reserve will be a close one!

B Grade saw some fantastic scores with the leaders sharing the honour between Lennox Cleary, David Karlsson & Paul Korbel all shooting 82. Again, will be a race to the top 8 with 86 sitting inside the cut line.

Once all players have completed their rounds next Saturday, the matchplay draw will be created and qualifiers will be contacted to advise tee times for the following day. Please note, tee times will be from 6.20am.

Monthly Medal

On Saturday the October Medal was played alongside the 1st round of Club Championships. A grade was won by Ian Perrin with 68 on a countback, Phil Blanshard took out B grade with a fantastic score of 63 and C grade was won by Luke Cheng with another great score of 65. 63 was hard to beat with Phil also taking out the overall score of the day. Member Survey

The Member Survey was sent to all Full Playing Members last Friday. If you have not received the survey to your nominated email address, please check your junk mail.

On a regular basis we conduct a survey to gauge satisfaction levels of our Members on all aspects of the Club. The response in the past has been excellent and, as a result, we have been able to implement many improvements and changes to reflect what our Members suggested.

The 2022 survey will enable us to further benchmark our performance and identify those areas that need to be improved. The results will assist the Board and the Club's management in their role as custodians of the Club's future direction.

Members will have until 31st October to complete the survey. If you have had any trouble accessing it, please contact reception.

MiMembership - Dine In Voucher | Accounts | Payment Options

club image

Following on from the success of the MiClub golf management software (timesheets and results), the Club has moved over to the MiClub Membership software - MiMembership. There will only be small changes noticeable to Members, mainly related to your accounts.

You may have already noticed the Members Portal displays five accounts (see image). Members can access these accounts through the Member Portal and view transactions and outstanding invoices at renewal time.

The Dine In voucher is no longer visible through the accounts section but has been applied to each Members membership card. As the year progresses and Members are unsure if they've used their voucher, it can be checked at the bar.

We look forward to seeing more Members enjoying the facilities as we head in to the warmer months.

Goulburn v Long Reef

Goulburn is a reciprocal club and we have been playing this event since 1952 uninterrupted till covid. At its peak there were over 50 Long Reef members heading to Goulburn (check the photo's in the locker room). Long Reef usually wins at home and Goulburn usually wins there, although Long Reef has won away more than Goulburn and we are at least one up : )

The current members that travel do it in various ways, some head down on Thursday playing golf on the way, then playing in Canberra on Friday, others on Friday and Saturday, and some just for the day, many play in the local Competition on Saturday which has a prize for the best Long Reef score (Dave Cooper memorial trophy). For those that like a punt Saturday 5th is ladies day at Goulburn race track, a great country race meeting with race lovers coming from all over the state.

There is plenty of accommodation in Goulburn with Motels, Hotels and Airbnb, another great way to stay is renting a house through smalldetails.com.au which specializes in Goulburn and has been looking after long Reef members for many years, look online or call Megan 0402113337.

Clear your diary and get out of Sydney for the weekend and support our country cousins and continue this great long standing tradition.

Rules with George | Question

Question:  Playing from the 16th tee Jim hit his tee shot slightly left. All players in the group saw the ball go into a 'pineapple bush' just short of the fairway and not come out. "No problem" said Jim "I know exactly where the ball is".

The players all went to their own balls. Joe saw Jim drop a ball within two club-lengths of where his original ball entered the bush. Joe said to Jim that he was lucky to find his ball so quickly. Jim told him that he head not found his ball but had declared it unplayable and dropped a ball under Rule 19-2c within 2 club-lengths with a one stroke penalty. Which is correct?

A) Jim acted correctly so has played his third stroke.

B) Jim acted incorrectly so must take the general penalty of 2 strokes so will have played four strokes.

C) Jim acted incorrectly so has now played five strokes after incurring three strokes penalty.

Hugh Brittain-White Memorial Trophy

Hugh Brittain-White

In December it will be forty years since Hugh Brittain-White died. Hugh grew up just across for the road from the Golf Club at 983 Pittwater Road. He was born in January 1960 the youngest of four children and the only son. He attended Pittwater House School.

His father Roy, had joined Long Reef in 1966 and he proposed Hugh for membership as a Cadet in 1974. He then became a Junior member from 1976, an Intermediate from 1978 and finally an Ordinary (Full) Member in July 1981.

Geoff Cranfield remembers him at school as a fun loving young man, and as a good golfer. They played in the Junior Pennants together as well as both junior and senior events at the club. Hugh won the Junior Championships in 1976 and 1977 and frequently played number one in the Junior Pennant Teams. A 1978 Results Book shows that he was competing in A-Grade off a handicap of 5 at that time. His Junior Pennant team that year included players Peter Withers, Frank Maiolo, Peter Stiles, Jeffrey Wood and Geoff Cranfield.

Sadly he died with leukaemia in 1982 at the age of 22. Geoff remembers what a shock it was to everyone and of course Hugh's family was shattered. He passed away only a matter of weeks after becoming unwell.

Following Hugh's death his parents created the Hugh Brittain-White Memorial Trophy which was presented for the first time a year later in 1983. It was presented to the Junior Champion in his honour. The winners name was to be inscribed on the Honour Board, engraved on the trophy and the winner also to receive a trophy donated by the family. For some years a member of the family would attend the Presentation and give a pewter mug to the winner.

The Championship is a 36 hole stroke event now run in conjunction with the Club Championships. It will soon have another Junior Champions name added to the trophy!

- This is the first time we have been able to show a photograph of Hugh  - many thanks to the Brittain-White family who have sent in four photos recently to add to the club's archives and also thanks for the effort made by Steve Twigg, Geoff Cranfield, Rob Cordaiy and Mick Snell that made it happen.)

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: C) is correct

Jim was permitted to declare his ball unplayable even though he did not find his original ball. Because he did not find his original ball he did not know exactly, the position of his ball so is permitted only to take stroke and distance relief so his correct position to play was back on the tee. Rule 19-2 applies - Because he dropped his ball within two club-lengths of where he thought it was he has played from a wrong place so in addition to his one stroke penalty for declaring his ball unplayable he also incurs the general penalty of two strokes for a total of three strokes penalty. So he has now played five strokes.

This is a situation where the Committee may be required to make a decision regarding a serious breach of the rules and apply a penalty of disqualification in stroke play, or loss of hole in match play or no score for the hole in Stableford.
