Reef Breezes | Wednesday 29 April 2026

Dear Kimberley,

Below are notes from the Board Meeting held on 28 April 2026

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS / PURGING OF ACCOUNTS

2026/2027 Membership renewals were issued on 9 April via email. If you have not received your invoice, please contact membership@lrgc.com.au.

Members are reminded that House Account and Prize Account balances must be utilised by 31 May 2026. Any remaining balances after this date will be purged. Accounts can be used in the Clubhouse or the Golf Shop.

Please note that any prizes won from 1 May 2026 will be retained in Members’ Prize Accounts.

CLUBHOUSE MASTER PLAN – DA DECISION

As communicated to Members on 24 April, the Northern Beaches Local Planning Panel has refused the Club’s Development Application for alterations and additions to the Clubhouse. This outcome was disappointing, particularly as the application had been assessed and recommended for approval by Northern Beaches Council’s professional planning staff and an independent planning assessor.

The Building Committee, in conjunction with the Board and our consultant team, will take the necessary time to carefully assess the Club’s available options, including the potential for an alternative development. This process will involve consideration of the most appropriate review pathway, the information required to address the Panel’s findings, and the best approach to ensuring the interests of the Club and its Members are protected.

Members will be kept informed as the Board works through the next steps.

COURSE MACHINERY

The Board has recently approved the purchase of a new John Deere Gator utility vehicle and a Toro fairway mower as part of our ongoing commitment to upgrading and improving our course machinery. These additions will enhance the efficiency of our course maintenance operations and support the team in continuing to present the Course to the high standard expected by Members and guests.

QUARTERLY FINANCIAL RESULTS

The Quarterly Financial Results have now been published and are available on the Members’ website and noticeboard. Please click here to view the results.

BY-LAWS UPDATE – RETENTION PLUS MEMBERSHIP

The Board approved the following change to 3.6 (ç) of the By-Laws extending the maximum time period in the category for Members who have young families. “Retention Plus Members have no access to Reciprocal Club benefits as set down in Section 6 of these By-Laws. They are not eligible to participate in Club Championship, Monthly Medals, and any event which is included in the Club’s Annual Major Trophy Events as defined in Section 2 of these By-Laws.

However, Retention Plus Members may otherwise enter to play on days any of the above events are scheduled. Further, they must remain on this class of membership for a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 24 months. The exemption for Retention plus is extended to up to five years from the birth of a Members child.

FORMALISING THE CLUB’S ARCHIVES COMMITTEE

The Archives Committee has operated in various forms for many years, supported by the dedication of members who have helped preserve and celebrate the Club’s history.

This has included the outstanding contribution of Sandra Mellowes and the wider team, who have done an incredible job caring for and documenting Long Reef’s 105-year history.

The proposed change formalises this important work by recognising the Archives Committee within the Club’s By-Laws and establishing it as a formal Committee reporting to the Board.

Moving forward, the Committee will continue to work closely with the Board to improve the Club’s records and archives systems, preserve key historical material, and better showcase Long Reef’s rich history for current and future generations.

Course Update – April 2026

The Course has received 587.9mm of rainfall so far this year. This consistent rainfall has been very beneficial for the Course, helping the turf recover well and maintaining good growth across all playing surfaces. As a result, our dams are now at 100% capacity. The full dams will ensure we have a reliable water supply to continue presenting the Course in great condition for members and guests.

The greens have responded exceptionally well following the renovations undertaken at the beginning of March. Recent maintenance practices, driven by the continued effort and attention to detail from the Greenkeeping staff, have supported a strong recovery and promoted healthy, consistent turf coverage. Members should continue to notice improvements in smoothness, firmness, and overall putting quality as we move into the cooler months.

We’re pleased to announce that the 16th hole is now officially open for play following the completion of the major construction works. This project has brought significant improvements to the hole, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding throughout the process. The turf is still in its establishment phase and will still take some time to fully mature and blend in with the rest of the course. We’re excited for the members and guests to enjoy the new look 16th and the enhancements it brings to the golf course.

Now that work on the 16th hole has been completed, our focus has shifted to improving other areas across the course, including ongoing remedial work on fairways and surrounds, pathway maintenance, and the continued spraying and control of weeds.

Question:

Playing in a Stroke Round, Bruce was going well.

Playing the 9th hole he hit a good drive which finished on the fairway.

When it was his turn to play his next shot he did what he normally did, 'Had a practice swing'.

As his club came through it just touched the ball and sent it approximately ten metres forward although he had no intention of striking his ball. Somewhat shamefaced he declared the contact with the ball to be accidental Terry another member of the group asked him what he would do next.

Which is correct?

A. There is no penalty as he did not intend to hit the ball. Bruce said he would  play the ball from its new position.

B. Because Bruce has moved his ball accidentally, a penalty of one stroke will apply and he will play his ball from its new position.

C. Bruce has moved his ball accidentally. He must add two penalty strokes and replace his ball on its original position.

D. Bruce must replace his ball on its original position and add one penalty stroke to his score for the  hole after playing his ball.

Answer: D is correct

(Rule 9.4b) Ball Lifted or Moved by a Player).

Rule 9.4b is a Rule which requires  a moved ball to be replaced on its original spot with a penalty of one stroke.

If Bruce failed to replace his ball on its original spot, he would have incurred the General Penalty of two strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in matchplay.

If a player accidentally causes a ball to move on the putting green there would be no penalty but the ball must be replaced on its original spot.
