Reef Breezes | Wednesday 16 November 2022

Dear IAN,

From your Captain

Medal winners

Score of the Day and C Grade Medal winner was Tony Valentine with an excellent nett 65. A countback was required to separate Tony and B Grade winner Dave Karlsson. The A Grade winner was Tommy Mastroianni with nett 67 while Janet Atchison was the Women's Medal winner with nett 71.

Glen Evans had a good day finishing runner up to Tommy in A Grade after a countback, he shared the Hidden Holes with Peter French, he won Nearest the Pin on the 2nd and converted that shot into a 2. Ian Brown was third in A Grade (68).

Ian Wilson was runner-up in B Grade (66) with Lennox Cleary taking out third after a countback on nett 67. Peter French's nett 67 to finish runner-up in C Grade obviously contributed to his share of the Hidden Holes while Peter Lindwall was third in C Grade.

Luke Edgell won Scratch after a countback with 1 under par while Rob Cordaiy was Nearest the Pin on the 13th and Roland Merhab won the Chubb's voucher for his shot on the 7th.

Innes McLennan holed his second shot on the 8th to take out the Circle and obviously record a 2, while other 2s were achieved by Jane Hagan, Ian Brown and myself.

Midweek Strokeplay Cup & Premiership

It is very close in all grades after the first round last Wednesday. Congratulations to Richard Wray who won Score of the Day and C Grade with net 67.

Jimmy Knox won Scratch (2 under par) and also leads the A Grade net (68). Ross Bockman (2nd)  beat Jimmy Little (3rd), Ian Brown and Geoff Cranfield after all of them finished on net 69

Chris Michell won B Grade with net 68 after a countback with Brad Roberge  while Will Sloman was third (70) also after a countback.

Maurice Fischer and Trevor Lobb both finished one shot back from Richard in C Grade with Maurice taking out second spot after the countback.

You can check out the full list of Gross and Nett scores, by grade on the website to see what you need to do in the second round on Wednesday 23rd November.

Saturday 12th

With the fine weather continuing and the course firming up and providing a bit more run, the great scores just kept coming. You're a bit hard done to when you have 43 points and need to go into a countback to settle Score of the Day.

Both Mark Robertson and Michael Rogan won B Grade and C Grade respectively with that score with Mark coming out on top after the countback. Michael did, however, also combine with Damien Moore for an incredible 52 points to win the 4BBB-they won by 4 points from Scott Haley and Hugh Wilson!

Rex Adams won A Grade with 41 points with Kristian Hooker second and Andrew Varasdi third after they beat Scott Haley and Jimmy Little on a countback when all four of them finished on 39 points. It wasn't Jimmy Little's day because he and Kristian also lost out on a countback to Chun-Ta Wu for Scratch after all three of them finished on 1 under par off the stick.

If you think this next line sounds familiar, it is (no, I haven't copied and pasted incorrectly!!).The runner-up in B Grade was Ian Wilson and the third place getter was Lennox Cleary after both had 41 points.. Yes, that is the second Saturday running they have finished in those positions in B Grade!!

Mark Stevens was the C Grade runner-up with 39 with Colin Thomas third after a countback on 37.

Jenni Brown was the Women's winner on the day with 38 points.

Malcolm Weir won $64 for his record 18 points in the Hidden Holes while Adam Philip won Nearest the Pin on the 2nd and Corey Battams was closest on the 7th. Both holed their respective putts for 2s. Nine people had twos with. Adam, Jimmy Knox and I each having two of them.

2s were definitely only a consolation prize because shot of the day went to Mark Pitt who took Nearest the Pin on the 13th courtesy of his hole in one (pictured). In his first 30 years playing at Long Reef, an ace had eluded Pitty but that is now his third hole-in-one in the last 14 months and all of them have come at the 13th. There's no doubting what his favourite hole is.

Upcoming events

You will have received the Email about entry into the Invitation Day on Saturday 10th December. If you are bringing a guest, you have priority access to the timesheet (it opens at 12 noon Friday the 18th). You will be able to book 2 Members & 2 Guests per row. If there are spots available on Monday 5th December, the timesheet will open as normal for Members to put their names down to play in either the morning or afternoon shotgun start competition. Entry fee will be $20 per person on this day and Christmas hams will be available as additional prizes.

The Captain's Cup (very prestigious!!) will be played in conjunction with the December Medal on Saturday 3rd. The winner will be the best nett score of the day. That is also the first round of the Strokeplay Cup - awarded for the best gross aggregate score across the December to March Medals. In addition, from December onwards, Strokes Gained is providing each Medal winner with a complimentary one month Membership to their new studio in Brookvale ...Christmas has come early for some lucky winners - good luck to all!

For the last three months, we have been trialing a white tee Stableford competition on Medal days for those not wishing to play stroke. It's fair to say that participation has been particularly poor but rather than just stop, we are giving notice that if you wish this option to continue, we need much greater take-up. However, given what I have just outlined above about what's on offer on Saturday 3rd December, I'm not sure many will opt to play Stableford but if you do want this option to continue, I would encourage you to enter the white tee competition on that date.

Good luck to Steve Prior who will be one of twelve competing in the Australian All Abilities Championship at The Victoria Club between December 1st and 4th, to be played in conjunction with the Australian Open.

On Tuesday 22nd November we are hosting an annual Charity Day in support of Westmead Children's Hospital and Jack Newton Junior Golf. As a result, the Members' competition will be a two tee start from 6.30am and there will be no Rookies competition and spots will be limited for the 9 hole competition. Thank you in anticipation of your understanding.

Major Pennant 2023

The draw sees us in a section with Camden, Stonecutters Ridge and Twin Creeks - so we've got some travelling to do!! The opening match is at home to Camden on Sunday 29th January. I'm not expecting many Members to come to the away games but it would be great to have some support for the home ones. Our other home games are February 19th (Twin Creeks) and March 5th (Stonecutters Ridge).

After being unavailable last year, it's good to have Luke Edgell back and Luke Shahmatov is a strong new addition this year. Recently crowned Club Champion Chun-Ta Wu will be at the top of the order in a squad that also includes the three men he beat on his way to the Championship - runner-up Cam Gillespie, Matt Hunter and Kristian Hooker. Retaining their spots in the squad from last year are Ryan Farrell, Dan Baldacchino and Harry McKerihan. Please join me in congratulating them all on their selection and wishing them good luck in the season ahead - let's see if we can get back into division 1.

Rule Changes

Normally around every four years, the R&A and USGA review the rules of golf to ensure they remain relevant and enhance the playing experience. With effect from January 1st 2023, the rule change that will impact most of us most often, relates to taking "Back-on-the-Line Relief".

This relief procedure, often used for penalty area and unplayable ball relief, has been simplified so the ball will now be dropped on the line and may roll up to one club-length in any direction without a re-drop being required. This change simplifies what had become a slightly complex procedure that was often breached by golfers without them realising they had done so. It represents a return to the essence of the easy-to-apply, pre 2019 process, which was almost entirely free of inaccurate application by golfers at any level of the game.

Enjoy your golf.

Vale | Timothy Murphy

The Club is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Tim Murphy who had been a Member of the Club since 1998.

Tim will be remembered as a gentleman and friend who would do anything for anybody. He loved his golf and a beer after.

Tim played rugby league for three clubs - Wests, Balmain and North Sydney and I believe is the only player to have ever been the first-grade captain at three clubs.

We extend our condolences to his wife Norma, son Ben, daughter Emma and his six grandchildren.

Rules with George | Question

Question:  Fred was playing the 13th Hole in a stroke round. His tee shot appeared to finish in a bushy area in front of the tee.He found what he thought was his ball, declared it unplayable and dropped  it with a penalty of one stroke (RULE 19)  within 2 club lengths of where the ball was lying. He played his next shot onto the green,

When he marked, lifted and cleaned his ball he discovered that it was not his original ball.. He realised that he had played a wrong ball

He knew that he must correct his mistake with a penalty of two strokes. He found his own original ball about 10 metres from the green, in a playable position. He played that ball onto the green close to the hole and holed out in one putt.

What was Fred's score for the hole?

A) 4        B) 5            C) 6           D) 7      E) Fred was disqualified.

Friday Club Report

It's a pantomime!

It's hard to believe we have only two competitions to go before Friday Club Hamper Day and our Christmas holiday break.Christmas is traditionally "pantomime season". A season of singalong, slapstick comedy, simple storylines and, above all, happy endings. At Friday Club HQ we don't need it a festive season to put on a spectacle, we can do that anytime.

Congratulations are extended to our new Life Members John Steuart, Ross Lanes and Mick Snell. They are the 38th, 39th and 40th members of our club to receive this honour and acknowledgement. As the club's early historian Ross Lanes is a very important part of the archive family and of course Mick Snell is currently a very active member of the committee.

Now in charge of our framed photos Mick recently found this portrait of the Queen "out the back"! (picture left) The frame is looking very dog-eared but seems to be a very good likeness of a young Queen. The authenticity note which should be on the back is long gone. Mick says it would have been hung on the walls at a time when men had to removed their hats in house in her honour.

You never know the painting may be a valuable treasure! The painting/print is signed by Denis Fildes. He was born in England in 1889, son of Sir Luke Fildes and joined the navy as a cadet to go on to achieve the rank of Commander. He was badly burned in the First World War when his ship the Cromarty was blown up in 1915. He turned to painting for a living. At first he specialised in flowers and seascapes but then turned to portraits and specialised in the Royal family but also painted Naval and Army Officers and also famous figures like Sir Edmund Hilary. His portraits which are mainly standing  poses still hang in Galleries and Military establishments like the Royal Naval College. The Imperial War Museum holds his archive. He died in 1974.

There is one photo of this portrait hanging over the old bar in the 60s (now the Gaming room) in the archive collection and another in the dining-room in 2001. As can be seen below this 2001 photo was taken when the clubhouse was still a reflection of the 1960s rebuild and renovation. This was just before the walls of the dining-room and the former Associates room lost all wall hangings in favour of a naked, dare I say sanitised non-golf club look, as the facilities became used more and more for outside bookings and a source of income.

Women's and Men's framed photos were sent to the respective locker rooms, paintings too eventually went "out the back" and the trophy cabinets were tucked away in the Member's bar or side entrance outside the toilets. In 2002 major changes to the clubs floor plan were to start, (although ad-hock changes had never stopped since 1923) including extending the dining-room out over the putting green, moving the Bar and creating the Terrace phase 1. The wooden honour boards were updated with plastic versions and remain for all to see.

The dining room (picture right) in 2001 with the portrait of the Queen on the wall between the In and Out serving doors. Lunch (sandwiches) and coffee was self-served from a long table with an honesty basket for payment. Small tables were set for threes as all games were played in threes then.

There are many backs of heads in the photo but I wonder if you can identify the women members of the time. Jill Greentree, Sandra Gillies, Jann Driver, the late Nancy Hohnen and the late Tibby Playfair dominate the front row.

club image

Here (picture left) we see Marilyn Denner, the late Jackie Grantham. Then it is Sammy Suzuki who along with her husband donated the clock. It was Sammi's farewell day as they returned to Japan soon after. Sammy had been on the women's committee for five years, two of them as Treasurer. The late Pauline McTaggart  is next to Sammy with Pam Shepherd and Lou Gordon making up this group. There were many more women in the room that day and the committee had already gone down to the office to do the cards!Frank Jenkins our Bar Manager for many years is in the background.

After retiring from his position he helped the caterers of the time Chris and Carol Saunders. For a few months J&D catering took over and then Flair Catering owned by Jo Bright and Steve Lee arrived, in late 2002. Jo and Steve remained for the next 12 years. This is when the weddings en masse really began and the Queen took an early retirement to the cupboard!

Sandra Mellowes | Archives Committee

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B) is correct. Fred must correct his play of the wrong ball, which he did.

The stroke played with the wrong ball and any more strokes played before the mistake is corrected including any penalty strokes solely from playing the wrong ball, do not count..

Fred had played 3 strokes with his ball plus the two penalty strokes for playing a stroke at a wrong ball. Rule 6.3 C applies.
