Reef Breezes | Thursday 9 February 2023

Dear Kimberley,

From your President | Board Meeting Notes

Below are notes from the Board Meeting held on Wednesday 25th January 2023

1. BAG, BUGGY, BATTERY STORAGE AT PRO SHOP

Following on from the note in the 11th January edition of Reef Breezes, the Board continue to monitor the risks in allowing lithium batteries to be charged under the Pro Shop and will be implementing additional measures to reduce the risk of a fire in the area.

Members Equipment Storage agreements will be distributed to Members utilising the Equipment Storage facility.

2. CYBER SECURITY AUDIT

The Club's external IT provider conducted a Cyber Security Audit on the IT infrastructure in use at the Club and provided a comprehensive report indicating the Club currently has the appropriate controls in place.

3.  BUNKER MASTER PLAN

The Bunker Master Plan from Craig Parry Design was distributed to Members via email on 20 January 2023 and an information night was held for Members to hear from Craig Parry and view the hole by hole design.

The project will commence in mid-late April with the first stage covering holes 1,2,3,5,8,17,18. It is expected these holes will be completed by mid-August depending on weather and minimal setbacks.

A copy of the Bunker Master Plan can be viewed here.

4. CLUBHOUSE CONSTRUCTION

As communicated through the November 'From Your Board', remedial and compliance works are scheduled in the Function Kitchen, Pacific Room and back storage area between 26 June 2023 and 7 August 2023. The Club has appointed INTREC as the construction manager for the project, with early investigation works commencing this month.

5. FINANCE

The result for December 2022 was a net surplus of $186,965 defined by the largest month the Club has had in green fees, cart hires and food & beverage sales. This was also the first December since 2019 where there hasn't been COVID prevalent in the community or overarching restrictions. The net surplus year to date is $732,339 and the updated full year forecast surplus is $1,115,931.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like clarification or further expansion on any of the items above.

Deadlines looming

The closing date for entries into this year's Mick Snell Cup - individual handicap Matchplay - is this Sunday. If you wish to be included in Monday's draw, please visit the "Bookings" page in the Member's portal and register your name on the sheet dated Sunday 12th February.

If you wish to bring your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or neighbours for a fun introduction to golf this Sunday (12th), please book their spots by Emailing jenny@lrgc.com.au. It's free and the fun starts at 3pm and runs until 4.30pm.

Strokeplay Cup

After the third round last Saturday, Matt Hunter has an eight shot lead over Ian Brown in A Grade. Wayne Portlock has a narrow one shot lead over Scott Haley in A Reserve with James Dean just a further shot back, Stephen Rowe has a commanding seven shot lead over Glen Brown in B Grade while Josh Malin has a massive ten shot advantage over Greg McHugh in C Grade.

The final round will be played in conjunction with the March Medal on Saturday 4th March.

There are only two ladies that have played in all three rounds and Jenni Brown leads Jane Hagan by 18 shots.

Founders Cup

This is awarded for the best nett aggregate scores in the January and February Medals and this year's winner is Chris Stoneman with a nett score of 141 (68 and 73 respectively).Well done Chris.

February Medal winners

Doug Moult shot an outstanding nett 64 last Saturday to win Score of the Day and the C Grade Medal by three shots, He narrowly beat A Grade Medal winner, Mark Gillespie who's nett 65 also beat the rest of his grade by three. Richard Thomas was the B Grade winner with nett 68. Nick Mundy's level par round took out Scratch.

The Women's Medal winner was Natalie Driver with nett 73.

Saturday 28th January winners

There were three sub par rounds on the day with Glen Evans shooting 1 under par (off 6), a score matched by Nick Mundy but Scratch went to Luke Shahmatov who almost went bogey free but a five on the 17th meant he finished with 69 (2 under).

Glen can feel a little hard done to because he went under par for only the second time in his life but his 43 points was not enough as Alan Shuttlworth shot a brilliant 44 points to win Score of the Day and B Grade. Glen did take out A Grade with Peter Skiffington winning C Grade with 40 points.

Special mention to Mitch Bockman who shot level par overall and within that saw the high of an eagle 2 on the 6th, immediately followed by a double bogey 5 on the 7th - golf gives with one hand and takes away with the other!!! Why do we love such a frustrating game so much??

Wednesday 1st February

There were a lot of players who beat their handicap so well done but congratulations to Pete O'Reilly who won Score of the Day and B Grade with 41 points, one ahead of fellow B Graders Kevin Macmillan and Doug McGrath, A Grade winner Roger Ehret and C Grade winner Kevin Stanton and runner-up Ross Guignon. Jimmy Little won Scratch with level par.

Major Pennant

After a very convincing 6-1 home win against Camden, the Major Pennant Team got a reminder of how hard it is to pick up points away from home when they went down by the same scoreline away at Camden last Sunday. We were always looking second best overall but around the turn we were up in two matches, square in one and only 1 down in another so with a strong finish, we might have sneaked a half but as the scoreline suggests, local knowledge prevailed and only Chun-Ta managed a win. We have another away match this Sunday at Twin Creeks before coming back to Long Reef on Sunday 19th for the reverse fixture.

Chun-Ta has had a big couple of weeks -I am delighted to inform you that yesterday he was one of five boys selected to represent NSW at the Australian Junior Interstate Teams matches in Tasmania this April and he has also just accepted a place at the University of Minnesota to continue his studies and further develop his golf game. He's still got Year 12 to complete this year and will head to the US around mid 2024. Congratulations Chun-Ta.

Bunker Master Plan

Thank you to all the Members that took the time to email me with their feedback and to those that came down to last Thursday's Information night with Craig Parry.

The full plan is available on the website and we also have it on display in the Members' area.

Work will commence in April and the first phase will include the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 17th and 18th.

A few Members were of the opinion that the course would be much easier when the work had been completed and were concerned about our course rating..We had already consulted with Golf NSW on this topic but after the evening approached them again and we have confirmation that they see no reason why our rating would change. We will obviously monitor scoring etc after the changes have been completed.

From your Welfare Coordinator

Rob Keir has been in hospital for the last twelve days after having a prostate procedure. We hope that he will be out soon and return to golf shortly.

Both Dragan Durdevic and Steve Sapsford have had strokes in the past month and are recovering. Dragan is looking at playing today and Steve will be having a walk around the course this weekend.

Peter Burke and David Costello have received positive reports in the last week. It is great to see them responding so well to their current treatment and we hope that these results continue.

If anyone knows of a Member that is experience illness, injury or "tough times" please ring me on 0418118410 or email servicewithservice@yahoo.com.au  so that I can contact them on behalf of the Club.

On Monday 3 April we will be holding a golf charity day for the Sargood Foundation. LRGC & the Sargood Foundation have a very close relationship including the "John Mullins OAM Memorial Grant".

Sargood's vision is to provide people living with Spinal Cord Injury an opportunity to live life to the fullest. Our role as a Sargood partner is to help raise money to assist with that vision. At Sargood those with Spinal Cord Injury are able to stay and enjoy both indoor and outside activities with modern adaptive equipment.

"From the bottom of my heart I thank the organisers from Sargood for their constant communication

and arranging every aspect of the trip in advance, the staff that looked after us whilst we were at

Sargood, the team at Long Reef Gold Club - Ben, Sam and all the pro shop and Bar/Restaurant

workers truly made it a flawless experience.

I'll finish by saying that Grants and Opportunities like this have the potential to really change peoples

lives and show them things that they can only dream of doing".

Shem Aitken - First recipient of the John Mullins OAM Memorial Grant

More information will be circulated to Members over the next few weeks but please keep the date free.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Dan had played his third shot to the 15th hole. The ball had gone through the top of the green and was resting just beyond a sprinkler head, about one club length from the green. He took relief from the sprinkler head, an immovable obstruction and dropped the ball, putting it into play in the general area of the course.

While getting his club to play his stroke a strong gust of wind moved his ball which rolled down the front of the green into a bunker.

Which applies?

A) Dan must play the ball where it came to rest in the bunker.

B) Dan may drop his ball again on its original spot, without penalty.

C) Dan must replace his ball again on its original spot without penalty

Two 1933 trophies are on loan to the club for the month of February and are on display in the Members'. Bar. One is the Dunlop Trophy presented to our Professional following his win in 1933. The trophies are on their way from the offices of GNSW to the Australian Heritage Society. Society Secretary, Les Browne is to be thanked for making them available.

See pictured 1933 NSW B-Grade Premiership Cup

The larger of the two trophies was presented to Long Reef in 1933. The first name to be engraved on it. It was in continuous use until 2001.

Inter-club competitions were played between the clubs in Sydney as early as 1900. The competing teams then included mostly the heavy-weights - for example in 1911 The Australian, Royal Sydney, Killara, Concord, Manly and Bonnie Doon created an elite competition. They played on neutral courses and had not  more than 12 a side. Results of the A, B, and C grade matches in 1911 can also be seen in GNSW archives and the lists include teams from some of the above plus "Hunter's Hill, Dobroyde, Parramatta, Drummoyne, and Cammeray." In 1921 the newly opened Long Reef Golf Club was keen to get in the mix! To get started Long Reef entered  B and C Grade and in 1929 also applied to enter an A Grade Team in matches. The Club was accepted but all matches were played away because we were only a 9 hole course

There is little doubt that we had the talented players, and the drive and leadership of Captain William Whytock, but the course itself held us back.  We can imagine established teams that did make it over the ferry, where the Harbour Bridge is now and then the Spit punt thinking they were off for a beach side holiday! Long Reef was very much the poor relation.

The Club had made a mark in 1927 as the C-Grade Pennant winners, but it was not until the completion of our 18 hole course in 1932 that we competed on equal terms. In the early 30s following the golf club building boom in  Sydney other clubs were encouraged to form teams and in 1933  there was a revision of B and C Division and new trophies created for both. The B-Grade (above) was sponsored by Schweppes. This Long Reef Golf Club win was 90 years ago this September.

There was a revision of the organisation of teams at the NSW Golf Council in 1934 AGM  and Long Reef was to go on to play at what became known as Group 1. A team of 15 players was suggested. With their good and consistent performances Long Reef continued to play in Group 1 from 1934 to 2001.

In 2001 The Metropolitan Major Pennant was established. It consisted of 5 Divisions where teams were either promoted or relegated based on their performance and overall score at the end of a season. Long Reef was placed in Division 1 in the first year in 2001 and maintained its Division 1 status until the beginning of 2022.

There have been some close finishes but the Men's teams of Long Reef have not won an A-Division/ Divison1/Group 1 Pennant just yet!

Wishing the present team the very best of luck in this year's competition

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: C) is correct.

Exception 2 Rule 9.3   Rules of Golf 2023. If a player puts the original ball, or another ball, into play by dropping, placing or replacing it and natural forces such as wind or water cause the ball to move and come to rest in another area of the course or out of bounds, the ball must be replaced on its original spot. If the ball had run further and come to rest in the general area it would not be replaced.
