Dear IAN,

Major Pennants

Round 2
Fresh from an opening-round win, the Major Pennant team travelled to Macquarie Links on Sunday 8th. Adam Elliott and Nick Hutchison led the side out early in two tight, see-sawing matches. Adam finished strongly to win 3&2, while Nick battled to the last to secure a 1-up victory. Ryan Farrell moved to No. 5 and produced a terrific comeback, overturning an early 3 down deficit to win 2 up. Harry McKerihan continued his excellent form, racing to a four-hole lead and closing out comfortably 5&4.

Cameron Gillespie was again impressive with a 4&3 win, and at No. 2 the ever-reliable Lennox Cleary controlled his match from the outset to win 3&1. Matt Tierney fought hard against Macquarie’s No. 1 but was defeated 6&4. A convincing 6-1 away victory lifted the team to the top of the table heading into the home match against Cumberland.

Round 3
On Sunday 15th February the team hosted Cumberland. Major Pennant debutant Joel Warren got the side off to the perfect start with an impressive 2&1 victory. He was backed up by Nick Hutchison, who continued his strong form with a hard-fought 4&3 win, and Harry McKerihan, who again dominated his opponent in a commanding 7&5 victory.

Adam Elliott and Ryan Farrell found it tougher, Adam going down 3&2, while Ryan lost 5&3 to Cumberland’s No. 1. With only two matches left on the course the result remained in the balance, but Lennox Cleary held his nerve to secure a crucial 2&1 win. Cameron Gillespie then produced clutch up-and-downs on the 16th and 17th to halve his match, sealing an overall 4.5–2.5 victory.

The team now travels to Cumberland this Sunday for the return match, where a win would almost certainly secure the group a semi-final berth.

Northern Peninsular Interclub Challenge (NPICC)

The first round of the NPICC was played on Thursday, 5th February at Mona Vale, where our team faced Manly. After a hard-fought day, with several matches going down to the wire, the contest finished in a draw, with four matches each.

The second round was played on Monday, 9th February against Cromer at Wakehurst. Once again, it was a closely fought contest, with matches decided over the closing holes. Despite a strong effort from our team, Cromer won 5 to 3.

The match on Monday the 16th was played against Wakehurst at Manly. While preparing to tee off, Scott Haley unfortunately strained his lower back and was unable to compete. Jamie Duff, who had come along to support the team, stepped in at the last minute, using Scott’s clubs, to take his place. A big thank you to Jamie who took his match all the way to the 18th.

The team battled hard, with most matches close throughout the day; however, Wakehurst ultimately secured the result, winning 5 matches to 3.

Founders Cup
The Founders Cup is a 36-hole stroke handicap (nett) event held over two Medal rounds, January and February.
The 2025 winner of the Founders Cup was Sascha Plate with a score of 134 nett. Congratulations Sascha.

16th Hole renovation
The renovation of the 16th hole is nearing completion. It is anticipated that the hole will be fully turfed and the new tees completed by the end of next week. The new work has involved approximately 6000 sq metres of new turf.

The three new bunkers have been shaped, their edges turfed, and the bases prepared with Klingstone. Bunker sand will be installed closer to the reopening date. We will continue to keep the Membership informed of the hole progress and advise when the hole is expected to reopen for competition play.

15th Fairway
From Monday, 23rd February, works will commence on reshaping the front portion of the 15th fairway. This will involve relocating and reshaping the mounds currently positioned on the right-hand side of the fairway to infill and redefine the area in front of the ridge leading onto the fairway.

Repairs to the 10th and 12th greens
Due to sections of the 10th and 12th greens experiencing turf dieback, re-turfing work will commence on Monday 16th February. Recent conditions have caused isolated areas of the putting surfaces to decline beyond recovery and therefore not up to the standard required for play.

To maintain the quality and health of the greens, the affected areas will be removed and replaced with new turf. Kurt and his team expect both greens to be completed by Thursday 19th February.

All repaired sections will be marked as Compulsory Ground Under Repair (GUR) until the turf has fully established.

Relief must be taken from these areas in accordance with the Rules of Golf and the Local Rule in place.

Course Renovations
The course will be undertaking a full greens renovation involving hollow coring and sand topdressing. This is a major maintenance program and the course will be closed for two days, 9th and 10th March to allow the work to be completed efficiently.

Coring relieves compaction and improves airflow, drainage and root growth. Topdressing the green with sand strengthens the soil profile and helps maintain a firm smooth surface. This maintenance plays a critical role in maintaining the long-term health and longevity of our greens. It has been 8 years since the greens were fully cored.

Rangefinders with Slope Function – Competition Use Reminder
Members are reminded that distance measuring devices, such as rangefinders and GPSs, are permitted during Club competitions. However, any additional features beyond distance measurement must be disabled.

Many rangefinders include a slope function, which measures elevation changes between you and the target and adjusts the distance to reflect uphill or downhill shots. The Rules of Golf permit distance information only.

Features that provide extra assistance, including slope, wind speed or direction, or other environmental calculations, are not permitted during Club competitions.

If your device includes any of these functions, they must be turned off or set to tournament mode before play. It is the player’s responsibility to ensure their device complies with the Rules. Use of a non-compliant device during competition will result in a two-stroke penalty for the first breach and disqualification for a second breach.

Question:

Alex was playing on a very windy day. On one hole he had taken relief and dropped his ball. As he was preparing to play, a very strong gust of wind blew his ball from its position at rest and it rolled into a penalty area.

Which is correct?

A.     Alex must play his ball from its new position if necessary taking an appropriate penalty.

B.     Alex must place his ball on its original position and play without penalty.

Henry Lovell Mann:

Served as the President of LRGC between 1921-1927.

Alfred Lambert:

Captain for one year in 1922 and from 1922-1940 the Secretary (Manager)

Peter Merrilees:

Fred Campbell:

William Whytock:

The Scottish born Captained at Long Reef from 1924-1928, and also served as the President of Balgowlah and designer of Cromer Golf Club.

Sandra Mellowes | Archives Committee

Answer: B is correct. Alex must replace his ball on its original spot and play again without penalty. Usually when a ball at rest has been moved by natural elements such as wind and water it is played from its new spot.

In this situation the ball has rolled from its original position in the General Area and rolled to a different area of the course. ;A penalty area;.

Exception 2 to Rule 9.3 deals with this situation. If a ball at rest has moved to a different area of the course from its original position it must be replaced on its original position. This also applies9.3 if the ball has gone Out of Bounds caused by natural elements.

If Alex had played from a different place he would have been penalised for playing from a wrong place. Breach of Rule 9.3.
