Dear KIM,

Bunker Masterplan

Bunker Master Plan | Construction Commencement

The bunker works will commence on Monday 17th April, with construction on holes 1,2,3,17,5,18 and 8 (current planned order of completion) in stage one. If we don't have any major setbacks or lose too many days to poor weather, stage one will be completed by early July.

To minimise disruption to play, there will only be one hole out of play at a time and the temporary holes 4A and 4B will be played. 4A will be a Par 4 from the 4th Women's tee to the chipping green and 4B will be a Par 3 between 135m - 150m from the left side of the 4th fairway to the 4th green.

Whilst the 1st hole is out of play for the first week of construction, all play will be starting from the 9th tee as a one tee start.

The construction zones will be kept to a minimum and we request all Members and visitors to keep out of the work zones.

Weekly progress updates will be posted on the Members Portal, so we encourage Members to regularly check in for updates on work in the week ahead and any changes to local rules, holes in play etc.

Scoring in Competition

The scorecard will reflect the course in play for the day and the temporary holes will use the rating of the hole out of play. i.e. when the 1st is out of play, hole 4A will be played as a Par 4 and have the stroke index of 9/21 for men and 3/19/37 for women. Hole 4B will have stroke index 6/25 for men and 15/30 for women. More information on scoring will be provided when the temporary holes come in to play.

If you are playing a Handicap Matchplay event, hole 4A will assume the Matchplay Index of the hole out of play and hole 4B will assume the normal Matchplay index of the usual 4th hole (i.e.. 3)

If you happen to be playing your match during the week that the first hole is out of play and you are starting on the 9th tee, you refer to the Matchplay Index as though the 9th is Hole 1, 10th is Hole 2 and so on.

Klingstone Bunkers

Each new and retained bunker will have a Klingstone bunker liner installed which is a gravel base cured with the application of a polymer spray. The benefits of Klingstone bunkers are:

  • Prevention of contamination of bunker sand, a current problem with the soil and clay bases.
  • Improved stability in the base and face of bunkers which will result in less plugged balls.
  • Maintains integrity of the drainage system and will result in bunkers out of play less after heavy rain events.
  • Reduces maintenance such as drainage work, weeding, pumping of bunkers and replenishing of sand.
  • Provides a more consistent playing surface than the current bunkers.

The following video provides more detail on Klingstone bunkers CLICK HERE to view

Course Maintenance

It has now been a little over a week since the greens were cored. They are obviously still a bit bumpy but they were cut earlier this week for the first time after the renovations and they will steadily improve over the next week or so. It always takes 2-3 weeks for them to recover fully so please be patient and do your bit to help by always repairing your pitch mark correctly and ideally another one or two. Looking after them in this recovery period is vital in ensuring they come back in the best possible condition. Thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

If you have played this week, you will also have noticed that preferred lies are in place for a ball in the closely mowed area because the course team are now scarifying the fairways. The temporary local rule applies to all holes while the work is carried out. The preferred lie is only an option so in the interests of pace of play, I would encourage you not to take a preferred lie unless it is necessary - there is little need to be taking one if you are playing a hole that has yet to be scarified.

Ben will go into more detail later in the Newsletter but the first phase of the Bunker Plan will commence on 17th April.

Representative Teams

Our NPICC team went down narrowly 4.25-3.25 in their final against Mona Vale at Bayview last Monday. Whilst they fell agonisingly short, it was still a very good season and congratulations and thank you to all the Members that represented our Club this year.

Our Women's Grade Team continue their campaign against Woolooware at Wakehurst this Friday and I wish them good luck.

I am pleased to let you know that Jimmy Knox will captain this year's Masters Pennant squad and along with himself, he has selected Ross Bockman, Ian Brown, Doug Campbell, Jamie Duff, Tony Holley, Jimmy Little, Adam Lynn, Mick McKerihan and Nick Sherlock.

Greenkeeper's Revenge

As if coring the greens wasn't enough, Kurt took to the brief and found some testing spots for the pins last Wednesday - just as well we were having four goes at every approach shot and putt!!

That said, the winning scores were almost as good as standard 4 Ball Ambrose events. Congratulations to Peter Stephenson, John Davison, Brian Tapp and Tim Becker who won the day with a nett score of 56.875. The runners-up were also the Scratch winners with 9 under par (62) so well done to Nigel McCook, Marc Sier, Harald Svensen and Nick Sherlock,

5 Club

Last Saturday, 9 Members proved you don't need 14 clubs to play to your handicap but Score of the Day went to Billy Edwards with 39 points - 2 ahead of the next best. Great work Billy!

Jake Schmidt won A Grade with 37 points and his 2 over par off the stick also won him Scratch, after a countback. Mark Gillespie (36) was runner-up in A Grade, beating Ross Bockman on a countback. Luke Whittington was runner-up to Billy in B Grade with 37 points, one ahead of Richard Spence. Peter Lindwall beat Jack Sloman in a countback for C Grade after both finished with 36 points while Evan Gibbs took third with 35.

Enjoy your golf

From your Welfare Coordinator

With this newsletter it is pleasing to be writing about Members on the road to recovery and returning to normality.

After 3 weeks of hospitalization David Costello is back home and returning to somewhat of a "normal life". He still has further treatment for his Melanoma ahead but is in good spirits.

Rob Keir is back home after a lengthy stay in hospital and is hoping to return to golf in 5 weeks. He is keen to catch up with the Friday Club Members and might be seen walking some holes in the next few weeks.

Good to see Steve Sapsford back on the course last week - playing his first game in a couple of months.

Steve's dad Ken recently had a heart operation but is now back home recuperating.

There are still some spots available in the Sargood Charity Golf Day on Monday the 3rd April. Bookings can be made at reception. It has now been confirmed that Ash Gardner will be the other guest speaker.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Joel was playing in a stroke event. Playing the 4th hole he was relieved to find his ball just past the penalty area on dry ground. He said I played an old ball in case I did not make it. He placed a new ball in the position of his original ball and played it towards the 4th green.

Which is correct?

A)  Joel acted correctly. He may change his ball without penalty.

B)  Joel has played a wrong ball, so with 2 strokes penalty he must correct his error  and play his original ball.

C)  Joel gets a one stroke penalty and must play  out the hole with the substituted ball.

D)  Joel gets two strokes penalty and must play out the hole with the substituted ball.

From the Archives | Our Course in the 1930s (18 holes)

This photograph is new to us . It is from the Warringah Library collection and is described as Long Reef Headland 1930s. Features and landmarks tell us that it was taken after 1931 when the 18- hole course was finished and then officially opened in 1932. If we could see the tramline which ran parallel to Pittwater road on the headland side we could date it a little better as we know that the tram line was closed and removed in 1939.

club image

Long Reef Headland 1930s

It is hoped that the diagram below helps see the extend of the first 9-holes at the top of the hill and the new 9-holes where the swamp used to be nestling beside and into the sand dunes. Bunkers are easy to identify but greens and tees a little harder to find.

The dark area was the remaining undrained swamp which was to be allocated to the club in 1965 on request. This is where you would see the 1stand 2nd holes and 3rd tee today. There were many trees in the roadside park, used as a camping site, which were removed by the Civil Defence in 1942. This is where the gun was positioned in 1942 on what had become the army's Field Firing Range. The shells were aimed somewhere in the arc out to sea across the headland and in to the South Pacific Ocean.

The oval, tennis court and the clubhouse can be seen. Many houses were yet to be built on the land across the road and in the space where the Salvation Army homes are now.

Griffith Park and Long Reef Golf Club -1930s

The copies of the photos below are of  a very poor quality. The first shows three players on a green beneath a huge sand dune. It must have been taken sometime between 1931 and 1942 the year the sand dunes were flattened.

Here we see the entrance gate to Griffith Park on the corner of Pittwater Road and Anzac Avenue sometime before 1942. Tents can be seen under the small trees in the background. There was also a tram stop on this junction created after 1921 when the Club opened.

Hopefully there will be a larger copy of this 'new' photo on display in the club or Pro-shop soon.

Sandra Mellowes | Archives Committee

Rules with George | Answer

Answer:  C) is correct.

Prior to 2023 the penalty for playing a stroke at an incorrectly substituted ball was the General Penalty. This meant loss of hole in match play and 2 strokes penalty in stroke play. Now the penalty is one stroke in both forms of play. When a ball has been substituted for an original ball it becomes the ball in play and a stroke may not be played at the original even if it is found within 3 minutes search time.

Rule 6.3, Rules of Golf 2023, Apply.
