Reef Breezes | Wednesday 5 April 2023

Dear IAN,

From your President

Board Meeting Notes

Below are notes from the Board Meeting held on Thursday 30 March 2023.

1. BUNKER MASTER PLAN

The bunker construction work commences with the shapers arriving on site on Monday 17 April. The work will start from the 1st hole and whilst the 1st hole is out of play, all competition and social rounds will start from the 9th tee.

The first stage of the work will include holes 1,2,3,5,8,17 & 18, with completion of this stage expected by early July.

Weekly updates and important information will be made available on the Members website as necessary. Please ensure you check for updates prior to your round.

2. CLUBHOUSE COMPLIANCE WORK AND MASTER PLANNING

The Clubhouse compliance work focussing on the two kitchens and Pacific Room is currently in the early contractor involvement stage. The Function Kitchen and Pacific Room will close on 26 June to complete the compliance work and re-open on 14 August.

During this time there will be some disruption to the Café, however notice will be provided to Members and guests in advance.

The Building Committee are currently undertaking research into master planning for the future of the Clubhouse. As part of the compliance works, investigations into the existing structure will be carried out to assist with understanding the dilapidation of each area of the building and assist in determining the approach to a Clubhouse masterplan.

3. PROGRAMME BOOK

Member phone numbers will no longer be printed in the Programme Book to ensure Members are in control of their details they wish to provide to other Members. The Members Portal contains a directory which each Member can determine which details are visible to other Members. In the Members Portal please visit the 'My Information' tab > 'My Details' > 'Update...' > 'contact details' and tick the 'private' box.

4. JOINING FEE

The joining fee will increase to $3,500 for applications received from 1 April 2023. There is currently an extensive waitlist and the new fee will reflect the Club's position among our neighbouring clubs and the current benchmark of joining fees.

5. ALLOCATED PARKING SPACES

It has been raised that allocated parking spaces are being used by others than the persons they have been allocated to. It was agreed that given the shortage of parking available it was preferable for those spots to be used by others when the allocated person was not utilising the spot. It is to be at the discretion of the person to whom the spot is allocated to offer the spot to others with the objective that all parking spots are utilised.

Please note the loading zone parking space is for couriers and suppliers dropping deliveries to the Club. Do not park in this space as it will add congestion to the car park when deliveries arrive.

6. FINANCE

The result for February was a net surplus of $187,962. Year to date net surplus is $1,120,598.

The good weather we have continued to experience has maximised usage of the golf course by Members and social players, and all areas of food & beverage continue to trade strongly.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like clarification or further expansion on any of the items above.

From your Captain

Strokeplay Cup

Last Saturday saw the sudden death play-off for the Strokeplay Cup and congratulations to Matt Hunter who won on the first extra hole. Matt hit a great third shot to a foot for a tap-in birdie which I couldn't match. The trophy will be presented to Matt at the major prize presentation in October. Well done Matty!

Long Reef Medal & Salver

We had 94 players enter our annual Vardon and Jean Derrin events last Saturday and it was certainly a game of two halves with near perfect conditions at the start of play before the southerly made things a great deal tougher, only for torrential rain to come in and make it even harder for the later starters.

The Medal winner with a very creditable 68 was Dom Falk from Goulburn. Dom's three under par beat Zach Mullins (NSW) by two shots with Andy Hugill (Mona Vale) beating Chun-Ta Wu on a countback for third after both finished level par. Dom was the lowest handicapper in the field with a GA handicap of +5.9 and I'm sure we'll be hearing about his triumph again when his Dad and the rest of the Goulburn crew come up for their annual visit in July. Well done Dom!

It was great that we could get a local winner (and second!) in the Salver, and Kate Shanks continued her fine form with an excellent round of 81 to beat the field. Emma Thurlow was runner-up after a countback with 85. Great round Kate, congratulations.

My sincere thanks go to George Wing who volunteered to be our rules official and to Danny Vera who kept play moving. I would also like to thank our Course Team for the way they presented our course and to the Catering Team who provided something to eat so promptly after we all finished.

Women's Grade

In the last Newsletter, I wished our Women luck for their final match against Woolooware at Wakehurst. They needed to win and then hope Cromer beat Eastlakes. They could only control their match and they did that with a 4-1 win and I'm delighted to say that the other result did go their way and they won the Division 3 Pennant. Congratulations to all involved over the season.

Special mention must go to Kate Shanks who finished the season undefeated - which didn't look likely when 3 down after 8 but a big comeback ensured she achieved that outstanding result.

Hudson Shield

The quarterly winners played off on Saturday 25th March and "Par" events may be most people's least favourite event but not Simon Thorn. He managed +1 on the day which was good enough to win the Hudson Shield. It too will be presented to Simon at the 2022/23 Major Trophy presentation later in the year. Congratulations Simon.

Winners

Dane Gemmell probably also likes "Par" as he won the day that Saturday with +8 while Mick McKerihan beat Jimmy Knox on a countback for A Grade (+4). Knoxy did, however, win Scratch. Murray Zimmer also had +4 in winning B Grade. Jenni Brown won the Women's comp with even - making it her third winning Saturday in a row!

Mick Harding celebrated his birthday on Wednesday 22nd March and did so by winning Score of the Day (42 points), A Grade and Nearest the Pin on the 2nd - Happy Birthday, Mick! Chris Payne was only one back in taking out C Grade and Coleman Jenkins won B Grade with 39 points. Tim Cruickshank was the Scratch winner with 1 under par.

Both "Circles" have been won in the last fortnight with healthy collects for their winners - Ian Brown hit his tee shot on the 13th to 30cm on Wednesday 22nd March to collect 36 balls while Jimmy Knox stuck his 2nd shot on the 8th to 1cm as part of his +4 score on Saturday 25th and won 32 balls.

David Ford was particularly unlucky last Wednesday. He missed out on a hole in one on the 13th by the narrowest of margins- 1 cm and Browny had won the circle the week before. But spare a thought too for David Mason, playing in the last group of the day, who hit his tee shot to 2cm only to find the other David had hit it to 1cm!!!

Scott Fitzsimmons won Score of the Day that Wednesday beating Rich Smith on a countback after both finished with 41 points to be the B and A Grade winners respectively. Michael Varvaressos won C Grade with 40 points. Nick Mundy was the Scratch winner with 1 under par.

April events

A reminder that the entries for the Mixed Foursomes Cup and Championship open at 5pm today (Wednesday 5th April).

The April Medal will take place on Saturday 15th April.

The Barling Trophy which is open to all Men and Women with over 20 years Membership will be held in conjunction with the Stableford competition on Sunday 30th April..

Practice range

With work starting on the bunkers before the next Newsletter, I wanted to outline the practice range arrangements while the temporary hole to the chipping green is in play.

"Witches hats" will be put across the practice range in a line slightly beyond the 125m post - balls must not be hit beyond them when practicing, I don't want to go into what will follow if that does happen, instead expect all Members to respect the rule and protect their fellow Members. All practice play must be in a southerly direction and will be from the artificial turf only.

As always, please ensure you pick up your practice balls when you are finished.

Enjoy your golf and Masters weekend!

All the best,

Doug Campbell | Club Captain

From your Women's Committee

Winners are Grinners - Women's Grade 2023

After all the virus and wet weather interruptions over the last few years, it has been simply awesome to be able to play every week of Grade and compete at some top golf courses, both near and far, during February and March.

This year our team was in Division 3 and our players were Kate Shanks, Emma Thurlow,Natalie Driver, Peta Bird, Jenni Brown, Rachel Buxton, Sue Kruse and Karen Smith. We played at and against Lakeside, Cromer, Wakehurst, Elanora, Massey Park and Woolooware.

After a narrow loss to Lakeside in round 1 our team rallied and went on to be undefeated for the rest of our games. It was certainly a nail-biting final round at Wakehurst with us,Lakeside and Cromer all within half a point of each other at the top of the table, and all having the ability to win the division depending on how the day played out. Peta was first to finish with a flawless 7&6 win, Emma followed a couple of holes later winning 5&4, Nat sealed the team win with her 3&2 in the bag, Rachel had a tight match going down on the18th and Kate made it that little bit sweeter with her come from behind 2&1 win. This convincing 4-1 win over Woolooware meant we secured the winners flag!

To add some sugar on top, Kate was also awarded the undefeated players medal having played all matches with 5 wins and 1 draw. Congratulations Kate!

All players represented Long Reef wonderfully, both on and off the course, playing their matches with great sportsmanship every single week. They also played some incredible golf and had a lot of fun in the process. There is no doubt that our team would not have done so well if it wasn't for our amazing caddies - Wendy Millson, Mick Snell, Pam Burke, Wendy Thomas, Sue Kruse, Karen Smith, Sally Hill and Jan Daniel - thank you!

An extra special thank you must go out to Mick who not only caddies but is our team minibus champion driver for the distant courses. This not only gave us an opportunity to catch up as a team and relax prior to and after our matches, but Mick got us all there fresh,on time and ready to play (except for Lakeside where we ran onto the tee, but we won't talk about that!).

Thank you also to all the Long Reef members who cheered us on with encouragement and enthusiasm as always, and those that came to Wakehurst on the last day to support the team. Next year we're looking forward to visiting some new courses, the likes of NSW, TheAustralian and Pennant Hills, as we move up to Division 2. Bring it on!

Pennant Winners: L to R Jenni Brown, Sue Kruse, Peta Bird, Rachel Buxton, Emma Thurlow, Katie Shanks, Karen Smith, Nat Driver

On 31 March, the Silver Salver Pennants played their first match against Ryde-Parramatta at Cromer. The team of Rachel Buxton (field captain), Karen Smith, Kim Sloane, Alison Gattas and Sally Hill, reserve, Diana Sier had a fantastic start to their pennants with a 4-1 win.

Good luck to Rachel Buxton, Janet Atchison Kim Sloane, Karen Smith and Sue Kruse. Reserve, Sally Hill who play at Pymble versus Monash on Friday 14th April.

On Saturday 1st April the Long Reef Silver Salver was played. The day started with blue skies and Long Reef looked awesome, although towards the end of the women's play the wind had got up and clouds rolled in with the rain following. We had 9 visitors playing but local knowledge won the day. Kate Shanks played a great game and won with a gross 81, Emma Thurlow 2nd 85 C/B. The nett was won by Peta Bird (78) C/B.

Charity Day Thursday 23rd March

It is my absolute pleasure to share that the women's charity day for Brash A-T was a resounding success. For that, our committee would like to thank everyone for their generosity and support.

Thank you to Laura who gave us a very heart-warming presentation, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. To all those wonderful ladies who put their heart and soul into the fantastic cakes - a big thank you. A day like this has so many people who contribute, from Jenny and Kimberley in the office to Wayne in the pro shop. We are extremely grateful for the club who offer their full support. A special mention to Karen Smith who, as always, did an amazing job as the auctioneer. So many local businesses have supported us with donations, it would be lovely to show our continued support for them in return.

As usual these days don't run themselves, I would like to say the biggest thank you to these fabulous ladies, Adriana Bowyer, Sue Blanche, Lisa Jenkins and Wendy Millson for their incredible efforts.

I am happy to announce that we raised a total of $23,020.00 for this very worthwhile charity.

From your Welfare Coordinator

David Costello is now back home recovering after successful heart surgery. He has also received some very positive results from the immunotherapy and he will be back on the golf course very soon.

Rob Keir is now recuperating back home and hopes to start playing golf in about a month. He will be probably be seen at the Club in the meantime.

Glenn Lovelace after having a shoulder reconstruction is now starting rehab. He will not be back playing golf for at least another 5 months.

Ed Whiley who is halfway through Chemotherapy for his pancreatic cancer, is also seeing positive results with scans showing the cancer reducing.

Thank you to all those who supported the Sargood Charity Day last Monday. We were very lucky with only an odd shower and finishing the round in sunshine. I will advise as to how much was raised in the next newsletter. Thank you to those people who helped to make it such a successful day - Gordon Philp an amazing MC and auctioneer, Alyssa, Mitch and our special guest speaker Ash Gardner.  I would also like to thank our staff who are often unsung heroes - Ben, Kim, Jenny, Michael and Jo.

Last week we asked the Members to vote on their preferred charity for next year - the winner was Gotcha4life! Next years event will be held on Friday 5 April 2024.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Thomas was playing in a stroke round. In his bag he had the allowable 14 clubs. His 14 clubs included a new driver, recently acquired by him. This club had an adjustable feature for changing the performance characteristics of the club. He had with him the kit needed to change the characteristics of lie and loft. When he started his round he found that he had set up the club with too steep a loft. After two holes he quickly changed the loft to a different angle and then used the club.

Which is correct?

A)  Thomas has acted within the Rules. No Penalty.

B )  Thomas gets the General Penalty of 2 strokes

C )  Thomas is Disqualified.

The Lilith Gollan Memorial  Trophy

After much discussion and thought given to what sort of competition would be appropriate it has been decided that it will be a stableford competition held on the one day and as a 1 through 9 hole competition, open to all. As a Member of GNSW in 2006, and seeing what was happening in other clubs, Lilith was responsible for suggesting a short course competition on Thursdays. It started out as an 11-hole competition with the aim of keeping as many players in the game for as long as possible.

With the hope of presenting a trophy that has some tradition to it, the archive committee, a committee that she established, has made available an old trophy. It was only presented once, and that was in 1938, two years after Lilith was born. It was the trophy given to the Club Champion to keep, and was returned along with other trophies by the winner to the Club years later. The winner's name on the cup is Mrs K. Withers. This is her husband's initial - Kevin. Her name was Doris. Their Membership can be traced back to 1931, but it may have started earlier.

The original bowl and crossed golf sticks have been given a new and bigger black wood base and aluminium engraving plates added. Hopefully it links the old with the present, as a reminder of Lilith's 51 years of Membership. The competition will be available to enter online.

The trophy is presented by Judy Hore, and Sandra Mellowes.
