Bunker Update

The past nine days have been spent on the 5th hole, removing two greenside bunkers and the fairway bunker 100 metres out from the green. A new greenside bunker has been constructed on the right edge of the green and the surrounds shaped to provide a 'run off' area that will pose a challenge to any player missing the green to the right. This will be a common theme on the Course where bunkers have been removed and the undulations continue from the green surrounds, promoting options to play a range of shots. The area of construction on the 5th hole is very large and over 800m2 of turf has been laid this week, which is currently GUR.

Work over the next week will include reshaping of the fairway bunker on 5th, reduction of two mounds in the 5th fairway and construction of the new fairway bunker on the 4th hole.

The bunkers on holes 1,2 and 3 are still out of play whilst the bunker edges and surrounds settle, however we are anticipating the sand going in late this week and then returning to play shortly after. When these bunkers reopen, please be mindful of where you enter and exit the bunker, to avoid damage to the edges.

Below is a picture of the current fairway bunker on the 4th hole after 10mm of rain over night. The improved drainage system and bunker design will result in immediate drainage when receiving this small amount of rain fall.

From your Captain

Medal Winners
After more than 400 attempts in his 37 years of membership, congratulations go to Perry Yeldham who won his first Medal on Saturday 6th May. His nett 65 was three better than anybody else achieved, so won him Score of the Day and the C Grade Medal. It was the second Saturday in a row that Perry won.

Nick Hutchison was both the Scratch winner (73) and the A Grade winner with nett 69 while Greg Black won B Grade with nett 68.

Catherine Wiggett won her first ever Women's Medal after a countback with Janet Atchison after they both finished with nett 74.

Girl Power
We haven't had many Women win Score of the Day on a Saturday since it was introduced, but not only did that happen last Saturday, two ladies also took out the 2 ball aggregate competition of the day too.

Congratulations to Alyssa Starc and Kate Shanks - their combined score of 77 points was a massive eight shots better than any other pairing. They almost played equal parts, but Alyssa edged Kate with 39 points to 38. Alyssa had an outstanding day because not only did she win the women's comp and share in the 2 ball, her 39 points also won the overall Score of the Day. If that wasn't enough, she won Nearest the Pin on the 7th and converted that into one of her two 2s.

The male winners on the day were Dom Dowling (A Grade - 37 points), Daniel Muncke who lost out to Alyssa on a countback for Score of the Day (B Grade - 39 points) and Craig Wood (C Grade - 37 points).

Luke Edgell was the Scratch winner on a countback after he, Dom and Jimmy Little all shot level par.

Hole-in-One
Congratulations to James Taylor who holed his tee shot on the 7th last Wednesday. (pictured)

Just a reminder that if you want your hole-in-one recognised and recorded on the board in the Clubhouse, please make sure that you inform Reception and complete the necessary paperwork and we'll also grab a photo of you ringing the bell!!!

They are at it again!!
Chun-Ta Wu and Steve Prior have continued their winning form away from Long Reef. Chun-ta won the Eastlakes Amateur a couple of weeks ago - he shot one over par (73) to end up in a 3 way play-off. He successfully holed a 30ft birdie putt on the second extra hole to win. Steve followed up his Australian Amputee Open by sharing the NSW Amputee Open. After a first round of 73, the conditions turned nasty for the second round and his 83 left him tied with Mike Rolls from Victoria. Rather than play-off (18 holes in that wind and hail was enough!!!), they mutually agreed to share the title. Congratulations to them both!

Masters Pennant
Our team got off to a bad start with a rare, heavy (6-2) defeat at Castle Hill last Sunday. Most of the matches were close with all except one going to at least the 16th. Unfortunately, we ended up on the wrong side of the tight ones but fortunately we at least managed a couple of points with Jimmy Knox winning 3&1 and I won 3&2. We're at home to Castle Hill this week and need to at least reverse the scoreline before taking on Penrith home and away over the following two weeks. If you would like to come down and watch, the first match goes off at 11.05am both this Sunday and next.

Bunker Program
As you have probably seen and read above, work is progressing well and thank you for all the positive feedback on how things are looking. Craig Parry has been onsite almost daily overseeing every aspect of the work and having him locally will definitely show in the finer details.

We anticipate sand will go into the bunkers on the first couple of holes completed later this week but we will likely restrict the access points for a little longer to help bed down the walk-in points, lips and surrounding areas. Please ensure you take extra care on the surrounds.

Where possible we will continue to have all the normal holes open on weekends. If we are playing 4A again on a Saturday, I'll look to ensure the pin is in a more friendly position next time!!!!

Enjoy your golf!

Rules with George | Question

Question: John was playing the 16th hole during a stroke round. He had hit his ball well down the fairway and the ball had run into an area where he felt that he would not be able to play an optimal shot. He declared his ball unplayable and picked it up. He looked around to see which of the options of Rule 19 he would employ.

He dropped his ball in a position where he felt that he would have a clear shot from a reasonable lie. As he began to address the ball, he became aware that his ball had been in a large area of ground under repair from which he was entitled to free relief. John may change his plan, pick up his ball and drop again without the penalty for an unplayable ball.

John acted correctly? A) Yes  or  B) No

From your Welfare Coordinator

It is with great sadness I report the passing of Roger Ehret last Wednesday. Roger joined the Club in 1984 and was a regular golfer during those 39 years. Always quick with a joke, his presence around the Club will be missed. More can be read about Roger and his involvement with the Club in the Archives report below.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday 18th May at 10.15am in the North Chapel of the Northern Suburbs Crematorium. This will be followed by a celebration of Rogers's life at LRGC from 12.30pm.

We extend our deepest sympathy and thoughts to Roger's family during this difficult time.

On a brighter note, some of our Members have had some health issues and are now on the road to recovery.

Helen Kook will be returning home on Friday from hospital and Roger Poignand is now back home with a new pacemaker.

Rob Keir and David Costello are finding that life is returning to normality.

Brandon Starc and Glenn Lovelace are now rehabbing after collar-bone and shoulder operations respectively.

It was extremely pleasing to see Abigail Gruzman at the Club last Saturday having lunch.

If anyone knows of a Member that is experience illness, injury or "tough times" please ring me on 0418 118 410 or email servicewithservice@yahoo.com.au  so that I can contact them on behalf of the Club.

From the Archives | Roger Ehret

club image

The Archive committee would like to send deepest sympathy to Roger's wife Kerry, children Robert and David and all the extended family following Roger's death last week.

Roger was a friend of the "Archives", an enthusiastic supporter, a provider of memories and a donator of his personal club memorabilia.

A Club Member from 1984 he seems to have had his greatest success as a golfer in the 90's as can be seen through the donated medals, and tankards. However, he was the last player to win the medal when only one was awarded across all grades. His most recent big win was the Vince Horan trophy in 2010.

A favourite piece of his memorabilia is the silver mug in its original purple velvet box that he won during a Cromer v Long Reef day. Of late his games were played with the help of a cart.

Roger will be remembered for his kindness and his very dry wit! As our local NRMA man for many years he frequently saved the day!

 Sandra Mellowes | Archives Committee

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B) is correct.

Unfortunately, John had already put a ball into play to take relief from his unplayable ball. It is too late for him to claim free relief under Rule 16.1.  Clarification 19.2/4, Official Guide to the Rules of Golf applies.
