Dear KIM,

Member Update

Bunker Master Plan

The large mounds of soil are slowly disappearing on the 18th hole as the bunkers are completed between the 18th fairway and practice fairway. There have been questions about the time it's taking to complete the 18th hole and what's happening between the fairway and practice tee. As many of you would have witnessed at some point, the right side of the 18th hole suffers major drainage issues and water can lie in this area for weeks after heavy downpours. The drainage has been upgraded as well as drainage installed in the fairway bunkers that lead to a pit behind the practice tee. The right rough between the new fairway bunker and the 18th green will be shaped into very subtle undulations to fit with the mounding short of the 18th green. The team will remain at the 18th hole next week, completing the greenside bunker and finishing off the three bunkers with klingstone.

Changes to the width and design of the waterway on the left side of the 18th hole and between the 4th and 5th holes are awaiting approval from Council before the works can commence.

We have sand! A delivery of 40 tonnes of sand is due today and another 40 tonnes over the weekend, allowing the bunkers on the 5th and 8th to be completed over the coming weeks.

Stage one of the Bunker Master Plan included holes 1,2,3,5,8,17,18 and was expected to come to an end in early July before the contractors were scheduled to return to other courses with active projects. However, the contractors have confirmed their availability to remain at Long Reef and see out the entire Bunker Project completion this year.

Clubhouse Compliance Construction

Works have commenced in the Café kitchen, Function kitchen and Function rooms this week, bringing both kitchens up to compliance standards and modernising the Pacific and Reef Room including the replacement of the Bi-Fold doors. Trades will be on-site over the next six weeks with the expectation of completing the project by early August. During this time there may be minor disruptions to the services we are able to provide and any significant disruptions will be communicated to Members as early as possible.

Holes-in-One

Congratulations to Michael McNee who made himself very popular with the Members of the Club on Saturday 17th June by holing his tee shot on the 13th hole.

Catherine Wiggett also had her first hole-in-one on the 10th last Sunday. Wendy has a photo in the Women's section, but I wanted to congratulate Catherine too. I believe there may have been a little hangover on Monday morning as a result of the celebration!

Bronze Medal for Anders

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Long Reef Member Anders Kobula clinched the bronze medal in the Special Olympics held in Berlin this week.

Competing against a field of highly skilled athletes from around the world, Anders showcased his remarkable abilities throughout the tournament finishing with rounds of 82, 93, 92 & 93.

The season wrapped up with a disappointing and comprehensive loss away at Kogarah who topped our section and progressed through to the semi-finals (which they won last weekend). The 2021 winners will now take on the 2022 winner, Monash in the final.

I would like to thank Jimmy Knox for captaining the Team and to all those that represented the Club this season.

Upcoming Events

The July Medal will take place this Saturday and the Whytock Cup will be played in conjunction. All the Medal winners from the last 12 months have been notified of their qualification and I wish them all good luck for the weekend. The Whytock Cup is one of the major Club trophies and will be presented on the Club Championship final day in October.

We are expecting delivery of our new "Medals" this week for each Grade and Women's winner - the heavy duty ball marker will come in a presentation case if you wish to keep it good but I expect some Members may wish to use it and have a bit of banter with their mates over having one!

Men's Foursomes Championships

The timesheet will come out as normal at 6pm next Monday (3rd July) and the qualifying round will take place the following Saturday (8th July).

As usual, it will be a one tee start and play will be in groups of 6. The Championship is open to all, with A Reserve being for daily handicaps between 8 and 13, B Grade is 14 to 20 and C Grade is 21 and over. The handicap of the lower marker in the pairing will determine the grade. The top 4 qualifiers in each grade will progress through to the semi-finals, which will be played at the start of the field on Saturday 15th July, with the finals being played on Saturday 22nd July. The Championship final will be played over 36 holes with the first 18 being played at the start of the field while the Grade finals will be over 18 holes and will start immediately behind the second round of the Championship match.

There will be 3 x 4 ball tee times set aside for Women to book and play in their Stableford competition and there will also be 3 x 4 ball tee times for Men, who don't want to play Foursomes, to play socially at the end of the field (around midday). There may be the opportunity to open more spots when we see how the Foursomes spots fill.

Pennant Hills Tee Swap Opportunity

We have initiated a 'tee swap' with Pennant Hills Golf Club as part of a trial with potential to increase participating clubs and provide LRGC Members with greater golfing opportunities across Sydney. Pennant Hills have been kind enough to offer us 1 x 4 ball each Friday at 12.04pm. This is a Medley competition time where a $15 comp fee only will be applicable.

There is a timesheet set up which will open 7 days in advance at 5pm. It will be open to all 5, 6 & 7 day Members. To be fair for all Members, this will be monitored to allow different Members the opportunity each week. There will be a waitlist option for those who miss out.

All correspondence regarding playing at Pennant Hills is to be made through Jenny Schulenburg (jenny@lrgc.com.au) - please do not contact Pennant Hills directly.

Congratulations to Catherine Wiggett who on Sunday 25th June hit the perfect shot on the 10th hole to record her first hole-in-one. The other players with Catherine knew it was a great shot but it wasn't till they got to the green and couldn't see the ball that they looked into the hole and there it was!

Kurt Schulenburg

How long have you been a greenkeeper for?

I started my apprenticeship at 16 with Elanora Country Club, I worked to become the 3IC & Irrigation Technician and remained at Elanora for 11 years. From there I moved up the coast to become the Assistant Course Superintendent at The Springs where I also worked at a turf farm & irrigation company on the weekends. After 3 years at the Springs, I moved back to the Northern Beaches where I became the Irrigation Technician at Terrey Hills Country Club for 3 years. Following that I remained on the Northern Beaches and moved to Long Reef to become the 3IC for 3 years, I had a 3 year break moving to Bayview as the Assistant Course Manager for 3 years, before returning to Long Reef where I have remained the Assistant Course Superintendent for the past 15 years.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy playing golf when I can and walking my cavoodle Coco. Living on the Beaches, my kids both surf so I love watching them down at the beach, I also volunteer as a coach for my youngest son's football team at Mona Vale Raiders.

What are your goals?

I am looking forward to completing the bunker master plan. I'd also love to head to Augusta to work at the Masters one day and hopefully have the opportunity to become a Superintendent.

Kimberley Long

What's your background?

I graduated from Uni with a Psychology degree but quickly fell into IT. I worked for international software companies and project-managed IT infrastructure and bespoke software for over 15 years and then ended up in Training and Development.

What do you do on your days off?

My 4 boys are now aged between 26 and 18, so I have a bit more free time than when they were younger. I decided to learn AusLan, so that's what I'm  currently doing on my days off, but I'm not very fluent yet!

Goulburn versus Long Reef visit

club image

Sunday the 30th July, 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of this now historic competition. It is the oldest interclub competition in Australia.

Goulburn have at least 18 players confirmed to play. The sheet to play for Long Reef is on the notice board.

The format is 2 ball best ball and is open to all categories of membership.

There will be breakfast to meet the players before tee off around midday. Presentation and dinner will be held at DYRSL this year as the club is doing renovations.

Get your name down early to get your place in the field and make our reciprocal club members feel welcome as they do for us every November.

The overall winners at Goulburn last November on a count back were, Billy Edwards and Jimmy Knox from Long Reef and Noel Ostini and Charlie MacDonald from Goulburn. Best Long  Reef score was Alan Herriot and Greg Dousset (who were the only Long Reef team to win their match) and best Goulburn score was Graeme Northey and Mick O'Neill.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Terry's ball was in a bunker with a wide grass vertical collar. He attempted to play his ball out of the bunker but the ball ended up embedded in the grass collar.

He knew that the reference point for taking relief is right behind the spot where the ball is embedded. In this case that meant that the spot would be above the sand in the bunker.

Which is correct?

A. Terry cannot take free relief because his ball and the relief area are in the bunker and there is no possible spot in the general area where he can drop his ball within the rules.

B. It is possible for Terry to find a different reference point and relief area for this embedded ball.

From your Welfare Coordinator

It is with great sadness I report the passing of Bob Thomson. Bob joined the Club in 1986 and was an early morning player. He regularly played with his son Paul until ill health struck. The funeral service will be held tomorrow at 10am in the Lorikeet Chapel at the Frenchs Forest Cemetery. This will be followed by a celebration of Bob's life at the Manly Skiff Club at noon.

We extend our deepest sympathy and thoughts to his family during this difficult time.

Neil Lucey is currently recovering and receiving rehab at Arcadia Private Hospital after having both knees replaced. OUCH.

Lindsay Bates is now back home and slowly recovering from his fall.

We wish both of them the best for a speedy recovery.

From the Archives | Reginald Manning Ellis

club image

As mentioned in the last issue having realised recently that two of the small wooden shields we have in the Archives, won by R.M Ellis are examples of men's club medals used in the 20s and 30s, it was decided to see if more could be discovered about him.

Coincidentally, Ross Lanes found an old photo in his collection with the name Reginald Manning on the back and then the penny dropped! It had already been noted from the Minute Book that Reginald Manning Ellis was a timber merchant and supplied the wood for the clubhouse in 1922.

club image

Reginald and his wife Irene joined the club in 1926 a few years after he had become the club's go-to timber merchant as the "Golf house' was built and extended many times. Fifteen years later, in 1941, he applied for 8a membership status which meant his membership of the club would be suspended for the duration of the war. This led to the conclusion that there is a, a wood story, a world war story and a golf story.

Reginald was born in Laurieton in 1892 and moved to Sydney with his family where his father and mother started a Timber yard in Pyrmont. The A. E. Ellis and E. Ellis business moved to Pittwater Road Manly in 1912. After his parents died in 1920 and in 1925 respectively, the business stayed in the family. In the 30s financial troubles led to a new business plan and a partnership was formed with the Hayman family in 1932. Reginald was one of seven directors of Hayman and Ellis.

It is impossible to estimate just how many homes in the shire and wider Sydney were built around the wooden frames produced at the mill. Barges pulled into Manly cargo wharf with logs and left with treated wood.

During the second world war, as part of the war effort the company partnered with the Slazenger sports company supplying materials and building army camps, hospitals and canteens. They also took over a small ship yard in Newcastle to build small wooden vessels to be used in campaigns against the Japanese in the South Pacific. The company continued as normal after the war and finally ceased trading in 2000.

club image

Reginald served in both World Wars. Joining the 1st Australian Imperial Force in 1915 he served as an army private in England and France for the next four years. He became ill in October 1918, but returned safely to Australia on a NZ hospital ship in June 1919. His father died a year later.

He was 49 years old when he enlisted for the second time in January 1942. This time it was in the R.A.A.F. Promoted quickly from Pilot Officer to Flying Officer, he held that rank throughout the war. This time he didn't leave Australia and served with the Administrative and Special Duties Branch, often as a Barracks or Hospital Officer. His stations were spread far and wide from Darwin to Melbourne. In 1944 his last posting was at R.A.A.F Nowra, and the 5 Base Torpedo unit. He returned to Sydney and civilian life in September 1945.

Apart from winning medals, we know little about Reginald the golfer. We do know he was on the Club's general committee for 6 years from 1930-36. He seems to have been interested in both new membership and the financial side of the club in particular. The Great Depression challenged the development of the club. In 1932 he was part of the decision makers helping lessen the financial burden on members. The committee allowed a transfer of membership to non-playing and also the facility to pay fees in instalments for the first time. Again in 1932 he supported the Professional Frank Eyre's application for leave so that he could attend the Australian Open in Adelaide and that two guineas be donated to pay his expenses.

There were two different proposals by him in the Minute Book in 1935. He suggested securing an $100 insurance policy to cover loss and damage but also insuring against Highway Robbery whilst the money was in transit from the club to the bank! These were desperate times! The third medal we have from the 30s belonged to Mr K. Withers and on a different subject he in mentioned when Mr. Ellis proposed that a letter be sent to him saying that he was responsible for breaking a table top and that the committee requested him to pay for same. Perhaps Kevin was dancing on the tables with his wife Doris in celebration! (We know that Doris was a good golfer and went on to win the Championship in 1938).

Having made a contribution to the club from 1922 we know that he didn't return to the club after 1945. He moved from Manly to Haberfield. Research has not been continued for the years after he left the club. We don't know how his medals made their way back to the club but he was living with his daughter in Newport in 1977 when he died at the age of 85. Perhaps we are still walking on some of his floorboards! It feels like it in the older part of the club sometimes!

Reginald Manning Ellis was another small cog in the developing LRGC wheel.

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B is correct.

When the ball became embedded in the grass collar it was NOT in the bunker but in the general area (Definitions).

Clarification 16.3b/1: Taking Embedded Ball Relief When the Spot Immediately Behind Ball is not in General Area ( Official ... Guide to the Rules of Golf....2023 ). "

When this occurs the player must find the nearest spot in the general area that is not nearer the hole than the spot right behind the embedded ball. While this spot is normally very close to the spot behind where the ball was embedded, it could be some distance away.

To find a reference point and relief area that is not nearer the hole is required by Rule 16.3".
