Reef Breezes | Wednesday 12 July 2023

Dear IAN,

Member Update

Lease offer from NBC
The proposed 30 year lease for the Club has been posted on the Northern Beaches Council public notification website for 28 days between 9 June and 9 July.

The feedback received by Council from the community will form part of a report to be presented to the Councillors to make their determination on granting the 30 year term. We are not anticipating an adverse outcome. As this process progresses, Members will be updated via the newsletter & Members News.

Clubhouse Compliance Works
Construction commenced across the Function and Cafe kitchens as well as the Function Rooms on 26 June. We are currently on target to meet the 4 August completion date.

The Cafe Cool room is now in operation and is a vast improvement on the previous storage solutions the Cafe team were having to navigate.

Bunker Construction
The Bunker Construction has been underway since 17 April 2023, and to date, holes 1-3, 5, 8 and 18 have been completed. Prior engagements had the Golf Course Shapers finishing stage one of the Bunker Master Plan at the end of June and returning to LRGC in early 2024, however, changes to their schedule has allowed them to remain on to see out the completion of the project. Whilst weather and supplies will continue to be a major factor, we are anticipating significant work to be completed over the next three months, bringing the project near completion.

Updates will continue to be posted on the Members portal.

Membership Subscription Finalisation
Membership renewal numbers have been finalised and it's pleasing to report the Club has once again maintained a very positive retention rate.

The final attrition for full playing membership was 4.9%. Thank you to the large majority of Members who ensured payment was made by 31 May. A reminder that all Full Playing Members who paid by 31 May, have received 3 x member guest passes that are redeemable through the Pro Shop.

New Members
Taking into account the attrition rate and ensuring timesheets remain accessible through the winter period, the Club extended invitations to 35 applicants from the waitlist to join as Provisional Members. This is the first intake since December 2022.

A credit to how special Long Reef is as a Course, Club and Membership, many of these new Members had waited over 18 months to join.

We continue to have a waitlist.

Course Machinery Purchase
The production and supply delays that have been witnessed worldwide over the past three years continue in the turf machinery industry. Four items of Toro machinery were approved for purchase by the Board including a Toro Spray Unit vehicle, a Rough Mower, Greens Mower and Walk Greens Mower. Currently the expected delivery time is June 2024 (12-14 months).

The Club is still waiting on a Toro Greens Mower and Toro Surrounds Mower that were ordered in mid-2022.

Board Elections
The next Board elections are to be held through September and October this year. In terms of the constitutional amendments passed at the October 2022 AGM, the term for the next Board will be 2 years. Though we anticipate a high level of stability, some opportunities may arise.

We would like to encourage anyone wanting to volunteer to support our Club through a transitional period (golf course renovations and Clubhouse modernisation) to get in touch with me, Ben, Doug or any other Board Member. We would like the opportunity to explain what being on the Board entails and how you can make a valuable contribution to your Club.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like clarification or further expansion on any of the items above.

From your Captain

MiScore
From Monday 17th July, we will be returning to "self scoring" and there will be an update to the MiScore app to include a new hole by hole comparison feature to make checking scores with your designated "marker" much easier. All Members that use the app will need to close and restart the app prior to their next round to ensure the update has taken place before their first round after this weekend.

Under the new method, a Member will record and submit their own scores but record the score of their playing partner for reference and verification. If a playing partner is still using a paper scorecard, they will record their own score using that and verification will still need to occur after.

Please CLICK HERE for more details if you require them.

New Golfing Events
To try and introduce some variety into our competition formats and provide some more fun at the same time, we will be introducing three new competitions into the programme over the coming months.

Handiskins is the ultimate game of skins for club golfers. It will be an optional competition and registration will take place on Saturday 5th August and will be played over five qualifying rounds between that date and 23rd September, with the best three aggregated rounds determining the top 4 qualifiers. Those four Members will have the opportunity to play-off in the final on Saturday 30th September, for upto $1,200 in vouchers - this figure will vary depending on the number of participants and all will receive an invite to the National Championship on the Gold Coast..

There is a one-off entry fee of $39 (over and above the standard $15 comp of the day fee), of which $4 goes to the Challenge Foundation supporting kids with cancer. There are prizes for every qualifying round as well as the final prize pool. We need a minimum of 25 Members to register for the event to proceed and if we can secure 40 participants that will generate the $1,200 final prize pool.

Additional details and the rules for the Club final are HERE.

The Club is going to support "Doing It For Jarrod" in conjunction with our 2 Ball Ambrose event on Saturday 2nd September (the weekend after the greens renovations). More details will follow nearer the time but the intention is to enhance the fun side of playing Ambrose while also hopefully raising a bit of money for a cause started following Jarrod Lyle's premature death to cancer in 2018. You've got a couple of month's warning to find something yellow to wear!!!

The Shootout will take place on a date (to be finalised) in Summer and will be played in conjunction with a family funday at the Club. Similar in qualifying mechanics to Handiskins but it will be the top 19 qualifiers aggregated from two of four lead-up rounds that will progress to compete in the shootout. All 19 will tee off on the first hole together and at the end of each hole, one player will be eliminated until only two remain playing the 18th. The worst nett score on each hole will be eliminated. In the event of a tie (of which there will be many in the early holes!!) a chip-off will determine who progresses and who goes out. Further details of the qualifying round dates, Shootout date and Fun Day activities will follow nearer the time.

I hope you get behind the above events and importantly enjoy them.

Whytock Cup
The first "major" of the 2023/24 Membership year took place on Saturday 1st July. Most of the Medal winners from the previous 12 months played off in conjunction with the July Medal. There were some excellent scores - Jamie Duff took the Clubhouse lead with nett 68 and that looked like it may be good enough. However, Rob McLaughlin and Paul March were playing together a few groups behind and both had Duffy in their sights, In the end, Rob tied Duffy's nett 68 but it was Paul who finished strongly for an outstanding nett 66 to win the Whytock Cup.

Congratulations Paul! You'll get the chance to defend next year because not only did his nett 66 win the Whytock Cup, it won the C Grade Medal, automatically qualifying him for next year's event.

The Masters has the tradition of the previous winner presenting the green jacket to the new champion. Once can't be called a tradition... but we took advantage of Ross Kocass (2022 winner) being in the Club at the time of the presentation. Pictured: Paul March & Ross Kocass, current and previous Whytock Cup Winners.

July Medal
As well as Paul's 66 winning C Grade, that was the winning score in both A and B Grades too. Mike O'Carroll has been a Member for 37 years and his B Grade win was his first Medal in all that time. Well done, Mike! Hopefully it was worth the wait. The wait isn't quite that long (and he does have a Club Champion's Medal!!) but Jimmy Knox's wait for a first monthly Medal looked to be over when he shot nett 66. Knoxy posted the score in the first group of the day and it stood until the last group of the day until Andrew Hayward chipped in to birdie his last hole and snatch the A Grade Medal and Score of the Day on a countback. It was Andrew's first ever competition win at Long Reef so one he will certainly remember. Well done, Andrew. Jimmy's 1 under par did win him Scratch.

Whilst there were a couple of first time Medal winners in the Men's competition, that certainly wasn't the case in the Women's, where congratulations go to Jenni Brown (nett 70) who won another monthly Medal - how many is that now Jenni? At least, it's the first of the new ball marker ones!!!

Severe Weather
The lightning storm at the end of June prompted a review into how we handle such events and while I won't outline the whole revised approach in this section, I encourage you to read the attached document or view it in the Member's portal, at your convenience. Click HERE to view.

In summary, we will be investing in an automated system that will send an SMS warning to designated stakeholders when lightning is in the area and approaching. It will then be linked to our siren and will sound, without the need for human intervention, when lightning is detected 10kms away. Play will be suspended and all players must mark their ball and leave the course immediately.

Please remember that your safety is still ultimately your responsibility and if at any time you feel unsafe, you should leave the course.

Thank you to those Members that raised concerns.

"Sorry Partner"
Last Saturday was a Foursomes event and the qualifying round for the Championship and Grade semi-finals. The outstanding score of the day was Rex Langthorne AM and Peter Watson who won B Grade with nett 66.5, which was 4 strokes ahead of B Grade runners-up Rob McLaughlin & Dave Farrell. A Grade and Scratch winners were Ian Brown & Tony Holley. The C Grade winners were Pete Hensman & Denis Watchorn, who won on a countback from Colin Thomas & Andrew Dunn, when both finished with nett 73.

The Grade winners are obviously the number one qualifiers for the matchplay in those grades and the top seed in A Reserve is Ross Kocass & Andy Regan.

Congratulations and good luck to all the qualifiers. The draw is as follows:

Championship

(1) Ian Brown & Tony Holley vs (4) Andrew Daddo & Simon Couch

(2) Mitch Bockman & Steve Prior vs Doug Campbell & Jimmy Knox

A Reserve

(1) Ross Kocass & Andy Regan vs (4) Les Browne & Terry Hill

(2) Dave Mason & Wayne Portlock vs (3) Dragan Mitrovic & Ian Perrin

B Grade

(1) Rex Langthorne AM & Peter Watson vs (4) Steve Sheppard & Chris Stoneman

(2) Rob McLaughlin & Dave Farrell vs (3) Mark Pitt & Trevor Waters

C Grade

(1) Pete Hensman & Denis Watchorn vs (4) Yutaka Yoshino & Harry Maynes

(2) Brad Jones & Russell Lee vs (4) Pete O'Reilly & Chris Payne

Pennant Hills tee swap

Adam Davies & Greg McHugh were the first Members to take advantage of our new tee swap initiative when they played Pennant Hills last Friday lunchtime.

club imageclub image

The weekly 12.04pm tee time on a Friday is available for Members to book via the online portal. It opens at 5pm on the Friday prior and all 5,6 & 7 day Members are eligible to book. You will only be charged Pennant Hill's $15 comp fee and you will play in their Medley competition.

Please do not abuse the privilege but allow different Members to book each week. There will be a waitlist if it is over subscribed but please only put your name on the sheet if you are fairly certain that you can play because withdrawing late may result in another Member missing out.

Greg and Adam had a great day and highly recommend signing up - there are two spots available for this Friday.

Enjoy your golf!

Ian Brown | Administration

Tell us about yourself

I am married to Renata, a feisty Italian woman and we have three amazing daughters, a doctor, a teacher, and one doing her HSC.Happily married - I'm happy, she's married. We live in Fairlight.

What's your work background?
After Uni I was a futures trader for 25 years. I also had a go at Real Estate but working Wednesdays and Saturdays was no good for my golf game.

Are you any good at golf?
When I first joined Long Reef 15 years ago, the goal was single figures, then you get ok at the game and aim for scratch. I did get there, but I am currently off 3 due to a schizophrenic short game. I've had 2 holes in one and played for our great Masters Pennant side. Jenni Brown and I won the Mixed Foursomes 4 times in a row. Tony "Ravi" Holley and I are trying to win the Men's foursomes.

What do you like about Long Reef?
I've been a Member for almost 15 years. I like it so much I work here! I look forward to every round, we are very very lucky.

Ross Holohan | Duty Manager

What is your Background?

I was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. The youngest of 4 boys, so my poor mum would have had an awful time reigning us in. Despite this I am extremely close to my family, in particular to my brothers, Eoin, Daragh and Marc. I am extremely proud of my family, where I am from and being Irish.

I went to St. Mary's College, Rathmines and played a variety of sports, representing my school's cup rugby team at U18 level while also playing football (soccer), wrestling and boxing for other sporting clubs. I also spent most of my youth skateboarding which took me around the country and to other parts of Europe. I was always trying to stay busy outside of school whatever means necessary. When I left school I followed what was and still is my main passion, acting.

I studied for 3 years, even spending a decent time in Padua, Italy, studying Commedia Dell'Arte.

Mainly what I studied led me to the field of stage acting, in particular Shakespeare and Chekhov, but also a range of different plays and shows.

What did you do before Long Reef?

Before I left Ireland, I spent a lot of time working part time jobs while also trying to become what I always wanted to be, a professional actor. I have performed all around Ireland, selling out shows in the Lyric theatre in Belfast, and the Mill theatre and Smock Alley theatre in Dublin.

I arrived in Australia aged 21 and have lived in Sydney since then.

I have had a variety of different jobs in that time. I've worked at different pubs, I walked around streets reading electricity meters and for 2 years I was a roof tiler. Long Reef has become a significant part of my life though, leading to friendships I hadn't had before starting here close to 5 years ago.

What do you do now?
Most of my time now is spent hanging out with my three children. Kieran, Edith and Desmond.

I still have a passion for most of the activities in my life, and am trying to perform in at least one stage show a year for one of the many great amateur theatre companies around Sydney.

I enjoy the odd game of golf, despite the tantrums I seem to be prone too.

Mostly I like to just hang out with my kids and my dog, go to museums, parks, the beach in summer and expose myself and them to a lifestyle not available to us Irish kids.

Rules with George | Question

Question: In a stroke round, Sam's ball was about one meter from the hole on the top level of the 14th green. Sam stroked his putt carefully but the ball missed the hole and kept running down the slope of the green, finishing off the green about 10 meters from the green. After considering his options Sam said, " I will declare my ball unplayable". Sam elected to take the stroke and distance option of Rule 19.2a with a penalty of one stroke. He placed his ball on the green at the spot from which he had previously putted. He carefully putted the ball into the hole.

Which is correct?

A) Sam acted correctly

B) Sam acted incorrectly and will have a further penalty.

From the Archives | Sally Woods and Carl Gunther

At the end of May long standing member Sally Woods died at the age of 93. At the end of June Carl Gunther died at the age of 90. They were both the epitome of what a good Club Member should be and very worthy of an extra acknowledgement. They both joined the club in the 70s.

Sally Woods

Sally joined Long Reef in July 1977 when she moved to Sydney from Bathurst.

Sally was an "Edgell". Her grandfather had started the food tinning factory just outside Bathurst in 1926. Sally and husband Gibb had a pig farm there too. Knowing what an elegant, quietly spoken person she was, it is hard to imagine her with boots on and a swill bucket in hand! She had her own role looking after the four children and it is likely she left the pigs to Gibb.  Sally played golf in Bathurst.

During her playing years at Long Reef, Sally achieved a high golfing standard as well as being a very gracious and efficient committee member and leader. Sally played in the Thursday field until 2009, but continued her involvement with the Club as a Bridge player and Social Member. Sally was joined at Long Reef by her daughter Tina Lance in the 90s for a few years.

For many years she remained a keen spectator on Championship days. Pictured Above: 2013 Sally, on the left, presents the Singles Knockout trophy, to Muriel Dawson. Along with Ruby Watts, Sally donated the prize money for the trophy for the Singles Knockout, although Ruby passed away some years ago, Sally continued the relationship with the event.

During her time on the Women's Committee she served in the following positions: General Committee 1980, Handicap Manager 1981-82, Captain 1983-84 and President 1988-90

Pictured: Associates/Women's Committee 1989
Back L-R Aileen McLelland, Jan Hanlon, Shirley Campbell (Jenkins), Shirley Blackburn, Josie Murray
Front L-R Joan Druitt, Sally Woods (President), Tibby Playfair, (Captain), Pat Brown

Having arrived in Sydney, there was more time for golf and Sally's handicap reduced quickly. Within the first year of joining the Club Sally had won The Committee Cup. Within two years she was playing in the Grade Team. Her best results were in the Bronze division. She was runner-up in the Premiership on three occasion in 1986, 1993, and 1995. Two Bronze foursomes wins were to come with Terry Mathews and she also reached the finals on four other occasion, three of these also with good friend Terry. The pairing had another runner-up result in 2006 this time in the C-Grade Foursomes.

Sally represented the Club many times in her more then 30 years playing membership, particularly in the Gordon Shield. It was Sally who proposed the idea of a Library in 1981, to be at a cost of 20 cents per book. The library has grown and is still very popular.

There is now a sign saying- The Sally Woods Library. We can remember her with every book or puzzle we borrow!

Carl Gunther

Carl joined Long Reef in February 1972 - fifty years ago. His wife Helen joined a year later and in their turn their two children were to follow. It was very much a family membership. Sadly Helen died last hear.

The Gunthers had moved to Collaroy in 1972, but Carl was already an experienced golfer. His mother was a good golfer and had encouraged him to play. He started playing at the age of seven and had been a member of North Ryde Golf Club before joining Long Reef. As a tennis playing swimmer Helen was reluctant to play golf, but of course grew to love it and became a great multiple Women's Club Champion, Grade player and Women's President continuing to play for the next 48 years when her health permitted. It may be fair to say that Helen became the star golfer of the family and Carl was so proud of all her achievements.

Carl and Helen became very keen Sunday players in the mixed events especially in the 80s and early 90s and entered the Mixed Foursomes together. They always stayed for Presentations. There was a large group of couples playing together then which led to weekends away, like the Blackheath Bowl with Lilith and Ray Gollan  and Bruce and Shirley Blackburn. They also attended the regular dinner dances at the club on Saturday nights and regular card games were arranged both in the club and at their homes. By all accounts Carl was an excellent Bridge player.

In an interview in 2016 Carl remembers his handicap on joining as being 24. He remembered doing well in the C-Grade Premiership in 1975  and we can find his name engraved on the Whytock Cup  for 1985. He was always good company on the course and in the club house and a very positive person.

Carl was on the Club Board/ Committee in 1996. This was the year of the most important decisions. Membership changed to 5,6 and 7 day categories, the Major course wetlands was underway and the club celebrated its 75 birthday. Carl was a member of the organising committee and  wrote in the "Reflections' magazine that was produced.

With retirement Carl started playing regularly in the Friday Club, at a time when it was considered Men only but he was more than supportive to see women included. He was President of Friday Club from 2010-13. He was there to organise a celebration of the Fridays club's 80th birthday. The club gained so much from Carl's membership.

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: A is correct. Although Sam took his relief from a point closer to the hole than its original position that was permissible.

In most relief situations, the reference point and relief area must not be nearer the hole than the original position of the ball.

When declaring a ball unplayable under Rule 19.2a and taking stroke and distance relief, the ball may be placed closer to the hole than its original position . The ball may be played from where the previous stroke was made.

Rule 19.2a "Stroke and Distance Relief" applies.

The player may play the original ball or another ball from where the previous stroke was made.
