Bunker Construction Update
Only 10 working days ago, the last bunker construction update in the Reef Breezes mentioned the 18th hole was nearing completion and construction would move on to the 4th green. Fast forward two weeks and the 4th greenside bunkers have been shaped, drainage installed, turfed and only awaiting the final klingstone application and sand. Now on to the 6th hole, which includes re-design of both greenside bunkers, removal on the large mound short left of the green and some subtle changes to the contouring around the green.

See the detailed design drawing (below) which Craig Parry drafts and the shapers follow during construction. At the commencement of each hole, the team mark out the design and then Craig reviews on site and can adjust as necessary. The frequency of Craig's visits has been a major benefit to successfully executing the work.

The 6th fairway bunker that has been used as a dumping area for excess spoil over the past 12 months is now finished. The area has been shaped to include low lying rolling undulations and top dressed with the turf chaff taken from the old 4th green surrounds. Once grown in, the fairway on 6 will be reshaped to include some of this area.

The plan is to concentrate in the area of the 6th, 7th and 14th greens over the next month.

Regular sand deliveries have been scheduled, however the statewide shortages continue to delay the return  of some bunkers.

Keep checking in on the Members Portal as updates and great drone photos are posted regularly.

Clubhouse Construction
The Function rooms and kitchen were closed for construction work in the last week of June and I'm very pleased to say the project is on track to meet the completion date of early August. Not only will the completed works result in improved and compliant kitchen facilities and modernised spaces for events, importantly it has provided an opportunity to investigate the existing condition of the Clubhouse including services infrastructure (hydraulic, electrical, and fire), as well as the structural integrity of the aging building.

There has been some disruption to our services and excess noise at times, thank you for your co-operation and we look forward to unveiling the upgrades in the next edition of the Reef Breezes.

Foursomes
Last Saturday saw the finals of the Men's Foursomes Championship and the A Reserve, B and C Grades. The Championship match was played over 36 holes while the grade finals were over 18. That said, after the first 18 holes, Mitch Bockman & Steve Prior were all square with Tony Holley and Ian Brown so in effect, all ended up being played over one round in the end.

Mitch & Steve made a strong start to the second round, winning the first four holes. Ian and Tony won a couple back but a birdie on the 9th had Mitch & Steve 3up going into the back 9 and when they were 4up with only 6 holes remaining, the finish line was in sight. However, momentum can shift quickly in Matchplay and even quicker in Foursomes and in winning 3 out of the next 4 holes, Tony & Ian had cut the lead to 1up with 2 to play. Tony hit his side's second shot over the back of the 17th green leaving Ian with a very tricky shot while Steve's approach spun off the front right of the green. Ian got their ball to the edge of the green but that still left a tricky putt to even get down in two. Seeing this, Mitch went for the safe option and used his putter...and promptly holed it from off the green for a birdie three and to win the Championship 2&1. Well done to Browny & Tony on making the final but congratulations to Mitch and Steve who's win puts a new pairing on the Foursomes Champions' board.

Steve Prior & Mitch Bockman Foursomes Championship Winners

I mentioned earlier that momentum in Foursomes Matchplay can be a hard thing to arrest when going against you and that was proven with all three grade finals ending up being one-sided affairs. Ian Perrin & Dragan Mitrovic got on a roll against Ross Kocass and Andy Regan from mid-way through the front nine and eventually ran out 6&5 winners in the A Reserve final. In B Grade, the number 1 qualifiers, Peter Watson & Rex Langthorne AM were too strong from the outset with Mark Pitt and Trevor Waters missing a few too many putts (which is easily done in Foursomes!!) and they ran out comfortable 7&6 winners. The C Grade final was tight for the first 8 holes but Peter O' Reilly & Chris Payne got on a run around the turn against Harry Maynes & Yutaka Yoshino, winning 4 of the next 6 holes to move from 1up to 5&4 winners. Well done to all the grade winners.

Mick Snell Cup
Congratulations to Phil O'Regan and Jane Hagan who have won their way through to the final. Phil saw off Paul Bowler, 2&1, in a tight match while in the other semi-final, Jane beat Steve Cunningham 5&4.

Winners
Score of the Day and B Grade winner on Saturday 22nd July was Richard Lloyd with an excellent 42 points. Terry Hill was the A Grade winner with 40 points while Milos Kleint also had 40 points to take out C Grade. Terry also combined with Oli Robinson to win the 4BBB. Cian Hughes won Scratch in his last game before returning to college in America. He won a few Scratch prizes while he was back on his summer break, so I'm sure Dad, Paul, will take advantage of the money in his prize account while he's away!! Jenni Brown won the Women's competition.

Brad Roberge won B Grade and Score of the Day on Wednesday 19th July with 40 points and combined with brother Craig to win the 2ball aggregate event as well. Mark Frith was the A Grade winner with 39 points and Simon Thorn's 37 points saw him win C Grade. Cian won Scratch - see what I mean!!!

38 points saw Richard Thomas win Score of the Day and A Grade on Saturday 15th July. 37 points was the winning score in both B and C Grades with Adrian Meyers and Roger Sharp recording that respectively. No, it wasn't Cian - it was Tim Cruickshank that won Scratch that day, but yes it was after a countback with him!! Janet Atchison was the Women's winner with 31 points. The 4 ball was won by Greg Bush, Matt Dixon, Murray Rowe and Chris Gladstone.

It was a White tee challenge on Wednesday 12th July and Steven Hill came out on top and also won A Grade with 41 points. Anthony Papandrea was the B Grade winner with 37 and Gino Debono won C Grade with 39 points. Gino also teamed up with Peter Cook to win the 4BBB with 48 points. I won't tell you who won Scratch - just guess...you'll be right!!

10th hole
It may have slipped a little recently but please remember to call-up the group behind when you reach the 10th green.

Handiskins
The first of the five qualifying rounds of this new competition will be held on Saturday 5th August - the more Members that register to play, the greater the prize pool that we play for. This could be an exciting new addition to our competition programme so I look forward to seeing how it is supported. The one-off $39 registration fee is payable before starting the first round. This is an additional competition so the regular $15 comp fee is also payable.

Programme book updates
With the winter greens renovations moving back by one week (now August 28th and 29th), some events that were scheduled around them have moved.

The 5 Club competition will now be held on Wednesday 30th August and the 2ball Ambrose (Keno qualifier and Doing It For Jarrod event) will take place on Saturday 2nd September so the Spring Eclectic will now start on Saturday 26th August.

Upcoming events
The Vince Horan Medal will be played in conjunction with the August Medal and the winner will be the best overall nett score.

The qualifying round for the 4B Knockout will take place on Saturday 12th August. Please ensure names are entered onto the timesheet with the intended playing partners together and register your desire to qualify on the sheet in the Pro Shop before starting your round. The top 8 qualifiers will play matchplay the following Saturday (19th) with the winners of those ties playing semi-finals on Saturday 26th and the final will be held on Saturday 9th September. Please only register to qualify if you are available to play on all dates.

Enjoy your golf!

Michael Mulquiny | Head Chef

Tell us about yourself?
Brought up on the Northern Beaches with my 3 brothers and 2 sisters, we spent a lot of time at the beach. We were involved in the surf club and participated in competitions but loved all beach activities such as swimming, surfing, fishing and water skiing on Pittwater.

What is your background?
I'm from a large family, so there's always a family gathering or a birthday to celebrate. Food has always been a massive part of our family growing up and continued through to adulthood. Apart from me, my brother is also a Chef, and my Mum has always loved to cook!

My passion for cooking definitely came from learning to cook with my Mum, she is a fantastic cook and makes the best meals for every family occasion - everyone loves her cooking!

What's a great three course menu to make for dinner with friends and family?

Entrée
Freshly Shucked Oysters with Chopped Chili and Lime
Tiger Prawns (someone else peeling them!) with Avocado and Mango Salsa

Main
Spit Roasted Suckling Pig, Roasted Mixed Vegetables, Apple Chutney, and Various Pickles
Served with a Side of Freshly Baked Sourdough and Mixed Salad

Dessert
Mum's Apple Crumble + Loads of Custard!

What do you like to do outside of LRGC?
Going on surfing adventures up the coast with my brothers.

Toni Collins | Weddings & Events

Tell us about yourself
I have been married for 27 years and have two incredible daughters; one 22 and the other 18.  Our eldest is studying interior architecture and design and our youngest is studying nursing.

My work history covers roles in administration in an employment agency, advertising and event management, I can honestly say there has never been a dull moment and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I live the dream of living and working on the Northern Beaches.

What is your background?
My heritage is half Australian and half Italian. My father is Italian and came out to Australia as a 16 year old immigrant with his Mother (who was a widow) and his 6 brothers and sisters. Toni is my abbreviated name, I was named after my Italian Grandmother Antonina - now shorten to Toni for ease!

How long have you worked at LRGC?
I have worked at Long Reef Golf Club for 12+ years.  I originally applied to a tiny add in the Manly Daily placed by the previous catering company (Flare Catering) for a 2 day per week administration role and was asked to stay on when Long Reef Golf Club took over the catering in late 2014

What do you do on your day off/spare time?
Besides washing, cooking and cleaning for a busy family, I enjoy going to the gym and on my days off and will often be in Manly either at the beach or walking our dog.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Gerry and Algy were playing a match. Gerry had the honour and hit off the first tee from the blue tee markers. Algy without comment played his first stroke from the black markers. The starter called out "Play is from the blacks" Gerry said, "I have played from the wrong teeing area. I will play another from the black markers and correct that". The two players were uncertain of the situation.

Which is correct?

A) Gerry acted correctly. His second ball from the black markers was in play. His score with his ball in play is one.

B) Gerry's first ball from the blue markers is in play without penalty and must be played as it lies. His second ball played from the black markers was played from a wrong place. He gets the general penalty for the first hole, so loses the hole.

C) Algy could now cancel Gerry's first stroke.

From your Welfare Coordinator

It is with great sadness I report the passing of Larka Kliman. Larka joined the Club in 1995 and only this year had transferred to Retention Membership due to ill health. It was only 2 weeks ago that I saw her at the Club. We extend our deepest sympathy and thoughts to Larka's children Jess and Luke during this difficult time.

The funeral service will be held on Friday 28 July at 2.15pm in the North Chapel at the Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens, 199 Delhi Road, North Ryde.

Neil Lucey is now back home and we wish him the best in his recovery after having both knees replaced.

Peter Frith had one of his knees replaced yesterday. Hope the rehab goes well.

Lindsay Bates is recovering well from his accident and is planning a return to golf in early September.

This week I will be going to the funeral of a very close friend (not a Member of the Club) who committed suicide last week. He was financially secure, had a successful business, a loving wife and family, very laid back, ran a charity and had so many friends. We had only been discussing going out to dinner the week before and when Popi received the phone call, we thought they were confirming a date. We could not believe the news that he had taken his own life.

Actually, still can't believe it and probably never will. He had been suffering from depression but only the family knew. I keep wondering what I could have done to help - the one thing I came back to is that I never asked if he was OK, I always presumed he was.

The only answer I can find is better communication. Having the open and often hard conversations is probably something we don't often do enough, but something we should try to do more often. When we know someone is doing it tough, ask them if they are OK, be there for them, or if you think they are OK just check in anyway.

If you are going through tough times talk to some-one - tell them you are NOT OK.

I don't understand why someone makes that final decision to take their life but I hope that someone might read this article and phone a friend or Lifeline (131 114) instead.

I wish I had spoken to my friend that day.

On the 5th April 2024 we will be holding a charity golf day at the Club for Gotcha for Life. This is the Club's opportunity to make a difference. Please keep the day free.

From the Archives | Prizes

Prizes - donations
Today, prize monies appear like magic in our accounts. It is efficient and convenient but computers are not so good at smiling, shaking hands and looking you in the eye! This started in 2017 but for decades there was a very different process.

The Club has always had great support from volunteers especially where donated trophies are concerned. With every new beginning and change of direction at the Club, like 1939 when the Club became a registered business or in 1946 when the course was repaired and re-opened fully after the war a list of volunteers would appear in the Minutes. Their intention was to create a new event or have a silver trophy for an established one.

It wasn't just the committee men or women who played their part. Everyone was invited to donate "things" to become trophies for weekly events. Although the men's and women's competitions were run separately and from different incomes and bank accounts the system was similar.

At the AGMs a list on a clipboard would be passed around and those in attendance indicated if they would donate an object as a trophy for weekly events. This could be for the Men's Wednesday or Saturday competition or both and Thursdays for the Associates (Women) across the three divisions. The men would include the donor's name across the top of the timesheet and it would appear in their programme book. On that day or near to it the donor would be invited to play golf with the Captain or President and be at the Presentation.

club image

Example -  The 1963 Men’s Programme Book.

The prize donors for November in 1963 were - Ron Anthony, Robert W. Thompson.

E. L. Armitage, F.C. Burke, and Des Lofthouse.

An item in the front of the book under the heading Trophies says...

"The Committee expresses appreciation of the generosity of those members who have so kindly donated Trophies for the season. It is desirable particularly as a matter of courtesy to the donors of Trophies, that the winners of  Competitions are in attendance at the Club at the time of presentation of Trophies."

Presentations were quite formal events. The Club President and Captain would be wearing their club blazers.

The prizes were mostly household items. Archive committee members Les Browne, Ross Lanes and Mick Snell remember serving plates, glasses, mugs, kitchen appliances, clock radios, wine and golf items. For a time, the thing of choice was equal to a set monetary value and the men's donor could bill the club. The women did not get compensated. Over the years the special golf game playing with the executives was scrapped and fewer and fewer members were donating, and perhaps the regular winners had enough collectables. So the comp fees were increased to account for a prize voucher to be provided by the club instead and handed to the winners.

The women continued the volunteer system until 1997 with a committee member being responsible for trophies, reminding and confirming. The men had gone over to handing out Club vouchers a few years earlier. Every female winner would also be given a Prize card, which showed the date of the event, the trophy donor and the winner. (See two examples of Sue Hardy's cards below.)

club imageclub image

Photos L-R Prize cards - Helen Kook was the donor in March 1996  and Terry Mathews in 1997. Rae Milsted with her prize cards.

club image

Chris Riddle and Jeff Wood winning their Bohemia Glassware in 1993 for winning the Mixed Foursomes.

Many of our players collected the prize cards and still have them, although perhaps the card outlived the "thing' that was won. The photo of Rae Milsted taken in 2012 shows proof of her golfing success and her bounty. Rae remembers for example, winning a dainty china figurine and gilt edged mugs.

All of this sharing, giving, and saying thank you added to the sense of club spirit. At Presentations, winners names came as a surprise to the majority. For the women it was a great way to learn names and share the achievement of  a handicap break for the day. In so many ways what was a time of special communication between members has been taken over by computers and they have no personal charm at all! The attendance at the men's presentations changed dramatically with the introduction of the breathalyser in the early 80s. The availability of more golf on other days of the week has also changed the number of players that come in or stay for a presentation on comp days. In spite of all the changes the women's committee in particular continue to run a Presentation which is full of praise, acknowledgement and information. The winners get a chance to speak and say how they did it!

Every gesture of help a volunteer made, (or makes) lessened the financial burden on the club and the workload of both committees and the then limited number of paid staff.

Answer:  B is correct.

Rule 6.1b(1) applies:

Algy, the opponent, could have cancelled Gerry's first stroke but that must be done promptly before either player plays another stroke. Gerry and Algy should walk to the second teeing area.
