Reef Breezes | Wednesday 23 August 2023

Dear Kimberley,

Clubhouse Compliance Works

The Clubhouse Compliance works have been successfully completed, meeting our deadline of 16 August for our first events, the Bridge Inter Club and Women's Visitors Day.

Over the past 8 weeks, we addressed structural and compliance issues in the kitchens and storage/back of house areas to provide a safer and more effective workspace. These included the installation of an additional cool room and freezer room (removing 4 individual freezers and 5 fridges), upgrades to services such as hot water and the Clubhouse electrical mains as well as addressing kitchen equipment and infrastructure that was dated or posed a WHS issue.  .

In the Pacific and Reef Room, the 6 vertical supports were in urgent need of replacement and the bi-fold doors were dilapidated after 20 years of exposure to the beachside conditions. Whilst replacing these urgent items, the AV offering was upgraded as well as carpet, ceilings and lighting renovated to create a more modern look and feel.

We will communicate opportunities for Members to be taken through these areas to gain an understanding of what was carried out and future works required, however don't hesitate to reach out to our management team if you are at the Club and would like to look.

The project has been delivered under budget and the detail will be finalised in the coming weeks.

Below are some of the before and after pictures from the works.

Doing It For Jarrod

The timesheet for this 2 Ball Ambrose event comes out next Monday (28th August) so please ensure that you put your intended playing partner on the sheet immediately after your name as the timesheet on the day will determine pairings. The event will also double as a Keno qualifier.

Ambrose can be a fun game but we are also looking to raise valuable funds towards the Jarrod Lyle Foundation (supporting kids with cancer) Jenny & Alex will be cooking a BBQ on the 9th tee for a $5 donation which will get you a sausage sandwich kindly donated by Devitts! Next time you are at the bar in the Club, please also drop a gold coin in and have a guess at the number of yellow tees in the jar to win the prize on display. Thank you in anticipation of your support and please wear a bit of yellow if you have some. There will even be a best dressed prize on the day!!

Handiskins

The 3rd round of Handiskins was played last Saturday. Congratulations to Cam Gillespie & Paul Bowler who have been the round 2 & 3 winners who both had scores of 39 points respectively in the 2 rounds. The leaderboard has started to take shape with Cam Gillespie sitting in the top spot on 108 with the next 4 placed between 104-106. The event is far from over though with only the best 3 of the 5 round scores needed to count! Good luck to all participants in round 4 which will be played on Saturday 9th September.

Mick Snell Cup

The final was played on Friday 11th August and congratulations go to Jane Hagan who became the first woman to win this trophy. Even though she was giving shots away for the first time in the entire competition, she used her distance advantage over Phil O'Regan to great effect and played some outstanding golf. By my reckoning, when she won 5&4, she would probably have been around 8-10 shots under her handicap so even though Phil played well, Jane was just too good.

4Ball Knockout

The semi-final line-up for this Saturday has been decided after last week's ties.

The number one qualifiers, Jimmy Knox & Jane Hagan beat Simon Couch and Darren Bradstreet 3&2 and will now face Greg Hunter & Cha Lo who beat Luke Murphy & Josh Malin on the 19th. The number two qualifiers Matt Pook and Michelle Ackerman will come up against Russell Young & Colm Galloway who beat Dragan Mitrovic & Ian Perrin 2up.

Upcoming dates

Greens renovations - the course will be closed on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th August

Spring Eclectic - this was scheduled to start on Saturday 2nd September but is being cancelled. With a temporary course and different holes out at various stages, logistically it was in the "too hard" basket.

Annual AON Charity Day - There will be no Members' competition on Tuesday 5th September - There will be a 9 Hole Members competition in the afternoon between 1pm & 2pm. This timesheet will open as usual.

Combined Services / Legacy Day - there will be no Members' competition on Monday 25th September but I do encourage you to sign up for this event and support a very worthy cause. The event involves an 8am shotgun start and is followed by lunch. Entry forms are now available from the office. Please refer to the noticeboard in the Clubhouse for more details.

Club Championship & Grade Cup qualifying

There will be a separate Email to all eligible Members nearer the time and I will also repeat the below in the next Newsletter so it is top of mind nearer the timesheet opening..... but read on and if you have any questions then please feel free to ask Jenny or I.

The two qualifying rounds for the Men's Club Championship, Grade Cups and Senior and Junior Championships will be held on Saturday 23rd September and Saturday 7th October.

Priority on the timesheet for both those dates will be given to Members wishing to qualify for the Matchplay.

Therefore, for those Members, the timesheet for Saturday 23rd September will open at 6pm on Sunday 17th September - instead of Monday 18th. The playing time that you select on that date will also be your playing time on Saturday 7th October. You will enter the draw process as normal on Sunday 17th and when you get into the timesheet, you will also be required to pay the $30 entry fee. If you are also entering playing partners, you will need to pay their entry fee too (and get it back off them!!!). The early access to the timesheet will close at midnight on the 17th September.

If you do not wish to pay the $30 entry fee upfront to guarantee your spot for both rounds or you just want a game on Saturday 23rd, if there are still spots available, the timesheet will re-open as normal on Monday 18th at 6pm and you can enter your name and any playing partners at that time. If you wish to try and qualify for the Matchplay, you will need to pay the $30 entry fee at the Pro shop on Saturday 23rd and put your name on the "qualifying" sheet. Your name and playing time will then be added automatically to the timesheet for the second round. You do not need to enter your name on this "qualifying" sheet if you pre-paid.

If you enter your name and pre-pay the $30 on Sunday 17th and for some reason you need to change it, please contact jenny@lrgc.com.au - do not try and move yourself. Please note that the $30 entry fee is non-refundable.

Other Winners

David Wing won A Grade, Score of the Day and the Super 6s last Saturday with 40 points. Greg Hunter was the B Grade winner with 38 and Sascha Plate won C Grade with 36 points. Cam Gillespie was the Scratch winner for the second Saturday in a row and Alyssa Starc won the Women's comp. The 4B comp was won by Ross and Mitch Bockman, Steve Prior and David Bradley. Special mentions go to Michael Hodgett and Paul Bradford who scored 5 points with 2s on 4A and 4B respectively. It took me 6 holes at one point on the back 9 to amass 5 points!!!!

David Ronald won B Grade and Score of the Day on Wednesday 16th while Andrew Koch won A Grade with 37 points and Sami Gaundar beat Craig Wood on a countback to win C Grade when they both finished with 36 points. Craig did however, combine with Tony Smithyman to win the 2 Ball Aggregate event. Ross Bockman was the Scratch winner

On Saturday 12th, Mark Pitt must have been playing a different course to everybody else in the field because his Score of the Day (44 points) was four better than any other male. Joel Warren won A Grade with 40 points while Gary Martinolli won C Grade with 38.  Cam Gillespie was the Scratch winner. You have to feel for Emma Thurlow who won the Women's comp but her 41 points would ordinarily have been good enough to take out Score of the Day. Jimmy Knox and Jane Hagan combined for 48 points to win the 4BBB.

Simon Thorn won C Grade and Score of the Day on Wednesday 9th and combined with William Nunn for runner-up in the 4BBB. Cam Gillespie had a successful day taking out A Grade with 37 points, he won Scratch and was NTP on the 2nd. Mark Pitt was only warming up for his Saturday round by winning B Grade with 38 points but he did also partner Terry Hill to beat Simon and William on a countback for the 4BBB.

Enjoy your golf!

The Pennant season has come to an end and 2023 has been a fantastic year for all our Pennant teams. Every team took their relevant competition down to the last week of the season. It started with our Grade team winning GNSW Grade Division 3. The NDPC started with our Silver Pennant team being joint runners-up, just missing out on games won. Bronze Plaque came 3rd with games going down to the 18th on the last day. Bronze III also came 3rd and just missed out on the last day. Bronze IV's last game was held at Long Reef Golf Club and unfortunately, the games didn't quite go our way and the team came third (Photo from our Bronze IV Pennants day Friday 11th August). Thank you to all of the convenors and to Cath Piper who is on the Northern District Pennants Committee. We look forward to the 2024 Pennant season.

Thursday 10th the Remembrance Trophies were played for. Congratulations to Clare John (30) who won the Scherrie Hughes Plate (18) holes with +2. The 9-hole trophy Forget Me Not was won by Judy Hore (39) with a Square.

Alex Knight | Operations Manager

What is your background?
I was born and raised in the Southern Highlands with Mum, Dad and 1 older sister. My sister and I both relocated to Sydney once High School was completed, my parents still live in Mittagong in our Family home.

As a teenager I was introduced to Golf joining Bowral Golf Club at 13. I only lasted 2 years at the Club as I also competed in water polo, tennis and swimming and something had to give.

In my mid 20s I decided to leave Australia to experience living abroad and relocated to Ottawa, Canada for 3 years. At one point I thought I might permanently reside in Canada but after experiencing my 3rd winter of continually -40 degree days Sydney was calling.

In Canada I worked across multiple restaurants and bars and also completed my WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) certificates. I develop a passion for wine and enjoyed Canada's heavy European wine influence drinking a lot of French, Italian, Spanish varietals and of course Canada's famous Ice wine. Although nothing compares to our Aussie wine!

How long have you worked at LRGC?
I started at LRGC as a causal bar staff member in 2005, and excluding my overseas years have been working for the Club the majority of my career. It's exciting to see the evolution of the Club and to work at such an iconic venue.

What do you do in your spare time?
I am recently on a fitness journey and have been consistently going to the gym for the last 2 years (where I see many familiar Members faces there too). I of course balance this out with regular social outings enjoying great food and wine.

I try to plan an overseas holiday each year, generally somewhere tropical where I can relax and recharge. Napa Valley is next on the list for a visit.

Theresa Nhung Nguyen | Chef

Tell us about yourself
I grew up in Vietnam and have been in Australia for 25 years as of this October. I love living in Australia, it's so beautiful.

It has been a dream come true to work here, I had always walked past LRGC and thought it would be a beautiful place to work, and when I saw a position was available my dream came true!

What do you in your spare time?
Shopping, cooking, watching TV, I'm learning to crochet to make a headband for my son's girlfriend.

How long have you been a chef?
I've worked in hospitality for 15 years starting out as a waitress, moving up to becoming a Chef when I received my qualification in 2016. I have run my own takeaway business and now very happy to be working here at Long Reef.

Rules with George | Question

Question: Jim, Frank, Peter and Alex were playing in a stroke event. Jim and Frank had completed the hole.

Alex had a six metre putt and Peter's ball was lying about 3 metres past the hole well off the line of putt. Peter asked Alex if he would like his ball marked. He said no need. Alex putted and the ball kept rolling past the hole and eventually just touched Peter's ball.

Which is correct?

  1. No penalty to any player because it was an accident
  2. Alex gets a one-stroke penalty.
  3. Alex gets a two-stroke penalty.
  4. Peter gets a two-stroke penalty.

Part 2 | Men's Club Champions

The final seven Champions from 2000-2023

Last time we recognised 8 of the 15 Champions who have held the men's trophy since 2000.

Another former Champion who has gone on to the Professional ranks is Brett Drewitt. Brett is originally from Inverell and began playing for Long Reef as a junior. He was consistently selected in both Junior and Major pennant teams. He travelled to the U.S where he fought his way onto the USPGA tour for 1 year and is presently doing well on the Korn Ferry tour. He lives in the US with his wife and child.

Brad McDonald was the Champion in 2009 and was a member of the Major pennant team. Due to family and work commitments his golf has been very limited over the last few years. He plays 4 or 5 charity days a year but that is all time allows.

Bradley McDonald 2009

Bathurst bred James Brownlow was the winner in 2008. James was a product of the College system in the US where he completed his studies. He moved out of the area and played at the NSW Golf Club before eventually joining the Australian where he has been a fixture in their Major pennant team winning the 2022 Pennant. He now lives in Thirroul with his wife and daughters.

One of our most successful Champions was Shaun McTaggart. Shaun was victorious in 1996, 2000 and then from 2004 to 2008, six times in total. A local product Shaun, with both his parents George and Pauline serving as Club and women's Captain, is widely regarded as one of our finest ever match players and represented the Club on many occasions. He lives on Sunshine Coast with his wife and family.

     Shaun McTaggart, 1996, 2000.04,05,06,07

In 1999 and 2003 Steve Morshuis was the man to beat. Steve, a New Zealander, came to us from Bayview. He also spent time on the Board serving as Vice-President. After moving to the Gold Coast he played as a Senior Professional.

One of our legendary members won the title in 1995, 1997 and 2002. Ross Bockman grew up in Albury. In Sydney he joined Monash Country Club where he won multiple Championships. He came to Long Reef and was an instant success playing in the Major pennant team. At 73 years of age he regularly beats his age and is always in the Masters Pennant team. He represented Australia at the Senior level in 2009, 2013 and 2014 and shows no signs of slowing down.

The last Champion of the 2000's was John Walter. John won the title in 2001 and was Junior Champion in 1997, 1998 and 1999. He played Junior pennants, captained the Eric Apperly side and played Major pennants. He is also an accomplished tennis player. He lives on the Gold Coast with his wife and sons and plays golf at Sanctuary Cove when time allows.

That takes us back as far as 2000. Over the years we have had 43 different Men's Champions and we have looked at only 15 so look out for the next instalment of the Story of the Champions. Will there be a new name to add to the list in October?

Left to Right : Steve Morhuis 1999,2003, Ross Brockman 1995, 1997, 2002 & John Walter 2001

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: C) Generally in stroke play, there is no penalty if a ball in motion accidentally hits a person or outside influence..(Rule 11.1). However the Exception to Rule 11.1a specifically provides that

"In stroke play if a ball in motion hits another ball on the green and both balls were on the green before the stroke, the player  gets the general penalty of 2 strokes". In match play there is no penalty for such an occurrence".
