Reef Breezes | Wednesday 6 September 2023

Dear Kimberley,

From your Board

Below are notes from the Board Meeting held on Thursday 31 August 2023

Lease offer from NBC
The proposed 30-year lease for the Club was included as an agenda item at the Northern Beaches Council meeting held on 22 August, however due to the meeting running over time, the approval for the Lease was deferred to the next Council meeting scheduled for 26 September.

Feedback from Council staff is positive that our application will be supported.

The public notification report including all submissions has been posted on the Club's Members portal.

Clubhouse Compliance Works
The Clubhouse Compliance works have been successfully completed, meeting our deadline of 16 August for our first events, the Bridge Inter Club and Women's Visitors Day. The booked functions and weddings immediately post re-opening all went flawlessly. Congratulations to Ben and his team managing a massive project without hitch.

The work rectified many non-compliant issues in the kitchen and storage areas, improved structural aspects of the function rooms and kitchen that had dilapidated due to the Clubhouse proximity to the beach over many years, and provided an opportunity to renovate the function rooms to provide a more modern look and feel. A lot was done in just six weeks.

Some minor defects are being addressed in the coming weeks.

The project has been delivered under budget with the final variations being resolved.

The staff are offering the opportunity for golfing Members to go "behind the scenes" and see the "back of house" kitchen and other Club areas on Monday 11 September and Thursday 14 September at 2pm. Not only do we want you to see the "engine room" of what the Club does we would like you to see the improvements and where the Club and our staff continue to face challenges. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to get a look under the hood. Please can you let Kim at Reception know if you would like to attend.

Clubhouse Master Plan
The site audit of the entire Clubhouse and its surrounds has been completed and the Building Dilapidation Report is under review to understand the condition and structural integrity of the existing building which will assist the required consultants during the next steps of the masterplan.

Members Discount Increased
The golfing Members discount on food and beverage from the Café & Bar has increased from 10% to 15%. The Club has once again received considerable inflationary increases from suppliers as well as the Government's bi-annual excise tax was increased in August. The increased discount to golfing Members will offset the impact of the input increases on our pricing.

Bunker Construction
The Bunker Construction at the 14th hole is nearing finalisation and work will move to the 7th hole on Wednesday 6th September.

During September, several loads of sand are expected to be received which will complete the 18th and 6th holes. Despite the sand shortages, the construction will continue through to completion to take advantage of the Shapers availability and the predicted dry weather.

Updates will continue to be posted on the Members portal.

Road Safety being addressed in Anzac Avenue
Following the tragic death of 5 year old Alfie Darby on Sunday 30 July 2023 in Anzac Ave, local residents came together with the Collaroy Rugby Club and Long Reef Golf Club to address Council regarding safety concerns within the Griffith Park and Collaroy Basin area.

A meeting was held with Council representatives in the days following to review the current speed limits, parking regulations in side streets, safety options around the Griffith Park Sports field and improved and safer pedestrian access for all community users in the area.

The Council will continue to work with the Golf Club and other Griffith Park stakeholders to ensure the discussed measures develop.

Board Elections
The Board election process commences in September and the Board for the following two years will be inaugurated at the Annual General Meeting on 26 October 2023.

Nominations for the Board open on Wednesday 20 September, and nominations forms can be requested through reception or by contacting ben@lrgc.com.au.

The Board Elections timeline is as follows:

  • 20 September - Nominations for Board open
  • 4 October - Nominations for Board close
  • 11 October - Ballot for positions on voting paper
  • 12 October - Voting opens
  • 22 October - Voting closes
  • 26 October - Long Reef Golf Club AGM

We would like to encourage anyone wanting to volunteer to support our Club through an exciting transitional period (golf course renovations and Clubhouse modernisation) to get in touch with myself or Ben. We would like the opportunity to explain what being on the Board entails and how you can make a valuable contribution to your Club.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like clarification or further expansion on any of the items above.

Keith Warren | President

A Day to Remember

Monday 4th September will live long in the memory of Rod Adams. Below is a screenshot of Rod's front nine scorecard last Monday.

As you can see, his incredible 29 points on that nine (which was more than I managed in 18 holes!!), included a hole-in-one on the 7th. He "only" managed 18 points on the back for a grand total of 47 points. Needless to say, he won the Monday comp. Congratulations Rod on a fantastic round of golf.

Doing It For Jarrod

For those of you that played last Saturday, I trust you enjoyed the day and I would like to sincerely thank you for supporting our initiative to raise money for kids cancer through the Jarrod Lyle Foundation. Your donations towards a sausage sandwich and guessing the number of tees raised $1,153.30.

I would like to thank Jenny Schulenburg for suggesting and organising the event and then cooking on the BBQ all day. Kurt, our Assistant Course Superintendent was actually on leave but he too gave up his time to pick up the tongs and cook the snags while Kimberley Conaty took on the role of salesperson.

Thank you to both the Team and you for making the day a success.

There were some great scores on the day too, with Jeremy Gruzman and Scott Haley (nett 60.75) just edging out Jane Hagan and Paul Bowler by 0.25, with Jenni Brown and Nat Driver a further 0.5 behind in third.

Tim Cruickshank and Brad Verrills won Scratch with 64.

Winners

Adam Peacock won A Grade on Wednesday 23rd August with 37 points and Score of the Day on a countback from John Steuart, who won B Grade and combined with Alan Morisset to win the 4BBB with 45 points. David Costello OAM was the C Grade winner with 36 points. Adam completed the trifecta by also winning Scratch.

Michael Rogan blitzed the field on Saturday 26th winning Score of the Day and B Grade with 43 points. Next best was a Grade winner, David Wing with 40 while Barry Young won C Grade on a countback from David Murrell, after both finished with 38 points. Michael also teamed up with Damien Moore to win the 2B Aggregate with 77 points.

Luke Edgell was the Scratch winner and Vanessa Murphy won a three way countback, ahead of Janet Atchison and Nat Driver to take out the Women's comp.

Sami Gaundar proved the best with only 5 clubs on Wednesday 30th August, although it did need a countback as 4 others shot 38 points as well and two of them - Omar Rutherford and Rod Adams can consider themselves particularly unlucky as they were in C Grade with Sami too. Chris Darby and Tony Smithyman were the other two with 38 points and Chris took out B Grade ahead of Tony. Michael McNee won A Grade with 37 points. The Irish Team Stableford winners were Trevor Campbell, Tom Gee, Brian Cronan and Steve Buchan. Matt Hunter won Scratch with an impressive round of level par.

Club Championship & Grade Cups

The two qualifying rounds for the Men's Club Championship, Grade Cups and Senior and Junior Championships will be held on Saturday 23rd September and Saturday 7th October.

Priority on the timesheet for both those dates will be given to Members wishing to qualify for the Matchplay.

Therefore, for those Members, the timesheet for Saturday 23rd September will open at 6pm on Sunday 17th September - instead of Monday 18th. The playing time that you select on that date will also be your playing time on Saturday 7th October. You will enter the draw process as normal on Sunday 17th and when you get into the timesheet, you will also be required to pay the $30 entry fee. If you are also entering playing partners, you will need to pay their entry fee too (and get it back off them!!!). The early access to the timesheet will close at midnight on the 17th September.

If you do not wish to pay the $30 entry fee upfront to guarantee your spot for both rounds or you just want a game on Saturday 23rd, if there are still spots available, the timesheet will re-open as normal on Monday 18th at 6pm and you can enter your name and any playing partners at that time. If you wish to try and qualify for the Matchplay, you will need to pay the $30 entry fee at the Pro shop on Saturday 23rd and put your name on the "qualifying" sheet. Your name and playing time will then be added automatically to the timesheet for the second round. You do not need to enter your name on this "qualifying" sheet if you pre-paid.

If you enter your name and pre-pay the $30 on Sunday 17th and for some reason you need to change it, please contact jenny@lrgc.com.au - do not try and move yourself
Please note that the $30 entry fee is non-refundable.

Greens Renovations

We were lucky with the weather and our Spring renovations went well. The recovery process is underway with the Course Team having now started mowing the greens and they will continue to roll, cut and dust them as appropriate over the next few weeks.

If you'd like to see how the process unfolds, click on this link which contains a time lapse video of the 18th green being done.

This is the part where I always say that we need to play our part too. We must ensure that we always repair our own pitch marks and ideally, any others that you see and please repair them correctly. If you need a refresher on the best method of repairing a pitchmark, please click on this link, or visit the Member section of the website. Thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

Fun (or maybe not so!) fact to finish

Since we introduced the temporary hole (4A) on April 17th, the average score on the hole is 4.85 - that's obviously almost a full shot over par on a very short par 4... and to think we considered making it a long par 3.

Thankfully I can't tell you what the average number of putts on the hole is because if any of you have had more 3, and even 4, putts than me, I feel for you!!!

Holly Arbon-Warner | Wedding Co-ordinator

Tell us about yourself?
I was born and raised in Dorset in the UK with my family but have spent the last 8 years living in Hong Kong with my Husband and little Dog. We moved as we wanted to see the world and my husband had the opportunity to play rugby for Kowloon and later went onto play professional for HK. I had previously trained as a primary teacher in the UK but fell into working as a Nanny in HK. I worked for some incredible families that I am still very close with today, a few of them now living in Sydney, which is lovely! However, I always knew I wanted to have a career in Weddings, so last year I undertook a course on Wedding Planning and became obsessed!

After growing tired of the fast-paced lifestyle of Hong Kong, we jumped at the opportunity to move to Australia and made our move in December 2022. We have since been exploring Sydney, setting up our lives here and planning our own 'covid' Wedding which finally happened in Greece this July!

What do you like to do on your days off?
Being new to Sydney, most weekends are spent exploring what this beautiful part of the world has to offer! I love to get out for walks with my little dog, getting into the gym or going to a Pilates class.

How long have you worked in LRGC?
I have just hit my 6-month mark at LRGC and I am loving every second! I work as part of the Functions department as a Wedding Coordinator / Function Manager and I truly LOVE my job. I have always wanted to work within Weddings and making our couples special day come to life is a dream come true for me! The team at LRGC have been incredible and I have learnt so much over the short period of time being here. I can't wait to see what lies ahead and to host all the Weddings this season in our beautifully renovated Pacific and Reef Rooms!

Tell us about yourself?
I've grown up in Anzac Avenue since the age of 5 and always loved Long Reef.

Recently I moved out of home with my partner and still living in the beautiful area. I've also recently got my Ps and absolutely loving the independence of it.

What do you like to do on your days off?
I love to spend my days off cooking, visiting friends and family and going out and trying new places and things with my boyfriend.

How long have you worked in LRGC?
I've worked at Long Reef GC for nearly a year now and I'm enjoying making coffees for you all, and all the chats I get with the Members.

Rules with George | Question

Question: James had started his stroke round on the 9th tee. His first stroke was fairly long but slightly left into a rough area.

He said he would play a provisional ,announced it correctly and took a second new ball out of his bag.  He played the provisional which unfortunately headed into the same general area as the original ball. Luckily after a short search both of the new balls with his identifying mark were found fairly close together. When the players looked closely at the balls they were not able to distinguish which ball was which.

Which of the following applies?

A) Both balls must be declared lost.
B) James may choose one of the balls as the original ball and play his second shot with that ball
C) James must choose one of the balls as the provisional ball, and play his third shot with that ball. The other ball is treated as lost and must not be played.

Melbourne Cup | Golf Members Pre-Release

It is the 70th anniversary of this interclub competition and we had the best turnout since COVID with 20 players coming to play in the annual challenge held at the end of July.

It was a close tussle with Long Reef coming out on top 5.5 to 4.5.

Winners of the major trophy, the "Ray Harvey Memorial" were Pete Verrils and Brad Jones from Long Reef and Digger Gann and Tony Boyd from Goulburn.

The Dave Cooper trophy for best Saturday score from Goulburn was Omo O'Neill.

Best overall four-ball was Sami Gaundar and Phil O'Regan. Best Goulburn four-ball was Paul Falk and Noel Ostini while Wayne Picknell and Glenn Bruce were Long Reef's Best.

The other half of this annual competition is in Goulburn on Sunday 12th November, so clear the diary, get away from Sydney for the weekend and enjoy the country atmosphere.

The sign-on sheet will be on the notice board in early October.

From the Archives | Club Champions

Part 1 Women's Club Champions

Most of the women's records were lost in 1950 in the flood! However we can name 35 female champions from 1945 if needed. Over two issues we look at the winners between 2000 -2023.

Since 2000 15 males have won the Club Championship. Only 5 of them remain active Members and we will be losing Chun-Ta Wu (our current Champion) to the US college system in 2024. The women have produced 11 Champions in the same time frame - of these 7 are still active Members of the Club and 2 have only recently left. It's not so much a case of where are they now but a review of their accomplishments and history. It is also of interest to see if any were home-grown.

Sandra Gillies was the first Champion of the new century winning in 2000 and again in 2007. She was also runner-up 7 times. Sandra played golf at school (Hornsby G.H) at Gordon and later Marrickville. Her serious golf career started in 1982 when she joined Long Reef and had lessons with John Kelly. Sandra was a fixture on the Assoc. /Women's Committee from 1989 to 2004 and in 1996 became the first female to be elected to the Club's Board serving as Vice Captain. This was followed with time served as a delegate to GNSW. She was rewarded for her service not only to Long Reef but to golf in general with election to Life Membership in 2016. Sandra and husband Bill a former Director of the Club moved to Queensland last year.

Jessica Kliman won the title 2001 on the back of her previous win in 1999. At the time of her 1999 win she was the youngest ever Club Champion and a most graceful golfer to watch. She went on to pursue a successful career in Television, got married and has a family. Many Members will also remember her mother Larka.

club imageclub imageclub image

Images from L - R: Sandra Gillies, Jessica Kliman, Jessica Simpson (Sullivan)

Multiple wins followed for Jessica Simpson (Sullivan) who was successful in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Jess was a baseball player and all round athlete who attended Narrabeen Sports High and joined Long Reef as a beginner whilst still at school. She quickly became the best female player in the Club and between 2002 and 2005 won 4 Championships, 4 Foursomes Championships and 4 Mixed Foursomes Championships. Jess is now a Police Officer and works in Regional NSW and still plays social golf.

Our most prolific winner since 2000 is Julia Bowen and she sits in third place in the list of all-time great multiple winners. Julia is behind Ruby Watts with 7 titles and Dulcie Fouracre with 8. Julia was successful in 2006, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018. She began serious golf in 2001 and joined Cammeray where she played and practiced and reduced her handicap from 45 to single figures in mid-2003. She joined Long Reef in 2005. She is also a Member of the Lakes G.C. where she has played representative grade golf and is a champion.

Kim Sloane came to the fore in 2008. You could say Kim is our most homegrown Champion and still playing very competitive golf. Her golf career began when she was employed as the Club Secretary in the early 80's - this position came with the golfing privileges of Staff Membership and so her golfing life began. She has a long and varied history with the Club as a Contract cleaner with husband Steve, and also working with Saunders Catering (Club caterers in the 90s) Kim has been a Member of the Grade team on many occasions and is still a well-respected player. She won the Foursomes Championship this year with Karen Smith.

In 2009 Tanya Heber-Nolan was the player to beat. Tanya has strong ties to the Club - her late father Elwyn being a Past President and Life Member. She has always been a solid golfer but work and family have interrupted her time on the course. She has represented the Ladies Grade team when available and has been Foursomes Champion on 5 occasions most recently winning the Weekend Foursomes with Jane Hagen this year.

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: C) is correct Rule 18.3c.

James had tried hard to have an identifying mark on both balls but it is particularly important that when playing a provisional ball, it can easily be distinguished from an original ball. James had two new balls and probably both had the same number. He had overlooked that fact.
