Bunker Master Plan Update

The past fortnight has seen commencement and completion of the 7th hole which included the removal of the three greenside bunkers and construction of two new bunkers with some interesting run offs and undulations.

Whilst it was only a minor set back in the scheme of the project, the three greenside bunkers on the 14th hole required the klingstone base to be relayed due to water damage during the klingstone application.

The new turf around the 7th and 14th bunkers has undergone its first trim, we should see these areas in play soon.

Construction efforts have now shifted to the 10th hole, where bunkers the three existing bunkers have been flattened and two new greenside bunkers are being constructed.

We recently acquired three loads of sand, which will be distributed between the 7th and 14th bunkers in the coming week.

We appreciate your ongoing support as we work towards the completion of our Bunker Masterplan.

From your Captain

4B Knockout

Having played together in the qualifying round, Colm Galloway and Russell Young came up against Jimmy Knox and Jane Hagan in the final a couple of weeks ago and this time, Matchplay turned the tables with Colm and Russell winning 2&1. As the scoreline suggests there wasn't a lot in it but crucial long putts by Russell on the 14th and again on the 17th saw them sneak home.

Handiskins

We have now played all 5 rounds of Handiskins. Congratulations to Phil Moss who is our 5th round winner with a score of 45 points!

Our 4 finalists playing skins for $1200 on Saturday 30th September are:

  • Dragan Mitrovic
  • Michael Cooper
  • Paul Bowler
  • Jimmy Little

You can view the leaderboard HERE.

Congratulations to all who supported the event, we look forward to hosting it again next year!

Personal bests

The last couple of weeks has seen a few Members record their lowest rounds to date.

On Wednesday 6th September, B Grade winner Anthony Papandrea shot 76 off the stick for 45 Stableford points. That gross score was matched by Brandon Starc in winning A Grade on Wednesday 13th September and beat his previous best score by two shots.

Neither Anthony nor Brandon won Score of the Day because two other Members also had personal bests on those same days. James Taylor had 46 points in winning on Wednesday 6th and had his handicap cut by four shots as a result while Jeff Seed broke 80 off the stick for the first time in winning on Wednesday 13th.

Tim Cruickshank shot 1 under to win Scratch and A Grade on Wednesday 6th and then went three better the following Wednesday to record his best ever round in again winning Scratch. Like all golfers, he'll talk about the bogey, bogey finish and what could have been as opposed to focusing on his fantastic achievement.

Well done to all on their best rounds ever...so far!!

Other winners

Anthony Papandrea may have lost out to James Taylor for Score of the Day on Wednesday 6th but he got revenge when he teamed up with Michael Maras to beat James and Alan Shuttleworth on a countback for the 4BBB!

Colin Thomas and Jim Wilcock have had a couple of good weeks in C Grade with Jim finishing runner-up on Wednesday 6th with 41 points and backed that up with 40 points on Saturday 9th, beating Colin for the runner-up spot after a countback. Not to be denied, Colin had 39 points on Wednesday 13th and took out C Grade after a three way countback.

Jack Sloman won C Grade and Score of the Day on Saturday 9th with 44 points while Tristan King won A Grade and Scratch with 41. Daniel Muncke took out B Grade with 36 points and Nat Driver won the Women's comp with 38 points.

Tom Sullivan, Scott Dawson, James Ellis and Ben Grozier combined to win the Irish Team Stableford event with 92 points, after a countback.

Brandon Starc and Andy O'Brien teamed up to win the 4BBB  with 49 points on Wednesday 13th beating Trevor Clayton and John Williams on a countback.

Congratulations also to Phil O'Regan who had 43 points in winning on Sunday 10th and to Tony Johnson who won on Monday 11th with 41 points.

And an overseas winner

Congratulations to Cian Hughes, who took his recent, fine Australian form back to his college in the US and won the first event of the season. Cian shot rounds of 70,68 and 70 to finish 8 under overall and win the event by three shots.

Good luck to everybody trying to qualify in the Club Championship and Grade Cups.

Enjoy your golf!

Tell us about yourself?

I grew up in Queensland and moved to the Northern Beaches of NSW when I was 11 years old and haven't moved since. I'm a proud father of two young girls and love living here in Long Reef.

What do you like to do on your days off?

I like to spend as much time as I can on my days off with my daughters, I like to go running and enjoy going out with mates.

How long have you worked in LRGC?

I started working at Long Reef in 2009 as an apprentice, about 5 years later I was offered the opportunity to move up and take the 3rd in charge position. I have always enjoyed working at Long Reef, it's hands down the best job I've had to date.

Tell us about yourself?

I grew up in the Collaroy/Long Reef area, pretty much living in and around the ocean. For as long as I can remember I have loved the coastline that we live on, spending my time surfing.

I have played representative baseball for about 15 years now, competing at state, national, and international levels. I have been fortunate enough to represent Manly, Sydney, NSW, and Australia while travelling to Europe and the US to compete. After I graduated high school, I was offered a scholarship to play baseball at College in Arizona where I studied and played for a year. Since then, I have come home for a change in direction.

I plan on studying Landscape Architecture at University next year in hopes of becoming part of an architectural firm where I can help design landscape spaces that are environmentally conscious and help degrading areas.

What do you like to do on your days off?

I like to keep myself occupied with surfing and travelling, it makes me the happiest. Surfing allows me to be free from strict training schedules and enjoy the environment which we have where I can express myself through my surf. Recently I have travelled back to Indonesia to surf and want to travel to more areas around the world to find waves and experience different cultures. It's a passion of mine that keeps me going.

How long have you worked in LRGC?

I started working at LRGC in 2021 - my final year of high school. Nine months later, I concluded work when I left for college in the US. I started back at the Golf Club in June of 2023 and I'm grateful that everyone has been so welcoming.

Rules with George | Question

Question:  Albert and Brendon were playing a match. On the first hole Albert had the honour. In starting the hole Albert mistakenly played his first stroke from  outside the teeing area(such as from the wrong set of  tee markers) Brendon did not cancel his stroke as he was entitled to do.

Albert's ball went out of bounds. Since the stroke was not cancelled and the ball is out of bounds, Albert must take stroke and distance relief, by playing another stroke. Albert went to the correct teeing area , placed his ball on a tee and played his stroke.

Which is correct?

A) Albert acted correctly

B) Albert did not act correctly.

Women's Club Champions Part 2

Here we look at the most recent 5 Champions that make up the list of the 11 winners since 2000.

Of all our Champions Jenni Brown has probably won the most trophies. Originally a country girl (Boggabri) Jenni came to us via Balgowlah and Wakehurst G.C. and joined Long Reef in 1995. She won the crown in 2010 and has been runner-up on 2 other occasions. Jenni has 6 Foursomes titles to her credit along with 3 more runner-up finishes. With a variety of partners she has won 10 Mixed Foursomes Championships and has been a permanent fixture in our Grade team, participating in 3 winning teams.

club imageclub imageclub image
Jenni Brown 2008
Catherine Gould 2013, 16, 17
                Alyssa Starc 2019

A 3 time winner Catherine Reynolds (Gould) joined the Club in 1983 as a 14 year old after receiving a scholarship to Pittwater House. That was after 5 years of junior golf with the Jack Newton Juniors and Merewether G.C. She considered a Professional Golf career but after doing work experience in the Pro Shop decided against it. Catherine won her titles in 2013, 2016 and 2017. Always in the Grade team when time permitted she was involved in 2 wins in 2015 and 2017. She also won the Foursomes title 6 times and served as Vice President of the Club in 2017/18. Catherine remains a club member and now lives in Coffs Harbour.

Club Champion Alyssa Starc (Healy), "Midge" as she is known, is one of the most recognizable faces of Women's Cricket in the world and is a Test and multiple World Cup winner. She joined Long Reef in 2016 and it quickly became obvious that she was also a talented golfer. Alyssa won the Championship in 2019 and has represented the Club in the Grade team. Her availability to play golf is entirely dependent on her cricket schedule but it will be very interesting to see how good she can get when she eventually retires from cricket.

Emma Thurlow was our next Champion winning in 2020. Emma joined Killara G.C. in 1996 as a cadet and played there for many years. After living overseas for a time she returned to Australia and started a family. Emma joined the Club in 2017. Her husband Andrew is also a member and keen golfer and they share parenting responsibilities and work commitments to fit their golf in whenever possible. She is a regular in the Grade team, captaining the team to victory in 2023.

Our most recent Champion is Josie Garrett. Josie has won the trophy for the last 2 years (2021  and 2022). In 2021 she was fifteen years of age and in winning  she finished Jess Kliman's  22 year run as our youngest ever Champion. Josie started her golf as a Cadet at Cromer and then played for a short while at Manly before joining Long Reef. She attends Oxford Falls Grammar School where she is in Year 12 and is also School Captain. Hopefully she will stay with us for years to come as she will most certainly win more titles and play Grade.

As you can see it seems that the women find a home at Long Reef easily, most of them staying for many years. Could this mean that the Ladies have more fun than the men? This is not a question that can be easily answered and the reasons would be mixed and varied - perhaps we will try in another article!

Good luck to all as we look forward to the Championship results on October 29th.

Mick Snell | Archives Committee

Rules with George | Answer

Answer: B is the correct answer.

To take stroke and distance relief the ball must be played from the same spot as the previous ball. That spot becomes the reference point and the relief area is within one club length. Additionally, because for the relief stroke, the ball was not in the teeing area it must be dropped not teed. (See Rule 14.6b).

Clarification 6.1b(1)/1Ball Played Outside Teeing Area in Match Play and Stroke not Cancelled by Opponent, applies.
