Senior and Junior Champions

These two prestigious events were played in conjunction with the qualifying rounds of the Club Championship and the defending Champions of both retained their respective trophies.

Chun-Ta Wu is our Junior Champion with an aggregate score of 143 while Jimmy Little beat Ian Brown on a countback, after both finished on 151.

Congratulations to both Chun-Ta and Jimmy.

Club Championship and Grade Cups

Last weekend saw the Matchplay kick-off and from 16 qualifiers in each grade, we now know the semi-finalists, who, next Saturday, will play for a place in the 36 hole finals.

In the Championship, top seed and defending Champion, Chun-Ta Wu beat Mitch Bockman 6&5 to set up a tie against Jimmy Little, who beat Dom Dowling 5&4. The other semi-final will be between Jimmy Knox, who beat Nick Hutchison on the 19th and Luke Edgell, who beat Adam Lynn 2up.

In A Reserve, Lennox Cleary was too good for Simon Couch, winning 5&4 and he will now play Andrew Hayward who beat Nigel McCook 1up. Chris Yates saw off Warren Evans 4&2 and he will take on Richard Smith, who beat David Bradley 2&1.

Greg Dousset beat the number one qualifier in B Grade, David Wing, 4&2 and in the semi-final he will play Cameron Daddo, who beat his good mate, Rick Christensen by the same score. Michael McNee beat Rex Adams 4&3 and will now play Will Elliott for a place in the final, after he beat Richard Spence 1up.

The number one qualifier in C Grade, Carter Harris, booked a semi-final match-up with Sacha Plate by beating John Dertateossian 2&1, while Sacha comfortably beat Brad Johnson 7&5. Yukata Yoshino was way too strong for Anthony Korbel, winning 7&6 and he will now play Aram Margarian, who beat Denis Watchorn on the 19th.

The semi-finals will be played first thing next Saturday (21st) so if you are up early and can come down and watch, please feel free.

If you can't make that, the finals will be played on Sunday 29th October and it would be great to see as many Members as possible come out and support. Immediately after the conclusion of the finals, we will be holding our presentation of the Club Championship trophy and Grade Cups, as well as all the other major trophies of the last year.

I won't promise, but you might find that if you come along and support and stay for the presentation, there may be a refreshment and some nibbles in it for you!!!!

Desperate times call for desperate measures!

When you're one down playing the last and your opponent is in a good spot, you need to go for the miracle shot and that is exactly what Adam Lynn did last Sunday.

Adam Lynn getting muddy

Unfortunately, it didn't come off as hoped but I believe mud is good for the skin so Adam's feet are at least in good shape!

Hole-in-One's

In the first round of the A Reserve Matchplay last Saturday, Glen Evans holed his tee shot on the 2nd for his first ever hole-in-one. Congratulations Glen.

I can just picture the scene on the 2nd tee after the excitement calmed down and Richard Smith went to tee his ball up and Glen says "this for a half, Rich".

On Sunday 8th October, David Murrell started his round with 2 wipes, a 1 pointer followed by a 2 pointer before acing 4B for 6 points!

Today (Wednesday 18th Oct) Laurence Archer also holed out on 4B. He said it was the only hole he didn't 3 putt all day!!

Congratulations gents!

October Medal

Carter Harris won the C Grade Medal and Score of the Day with nett 66, beating Josh Dowse by one. Gary Martinolli took out third place in C Grade, beating Denis Watchorn on a countback, after they both finished with nett 68.

Nett 68 was the winning score for the Medal winners in both A Grade and B Grade - Nick Hutchison won A Grade while Malcolm Weir beat Angus McPhee on a countback to win B Grade. Colm Galloway was runner-up in A Grade with nett 69, while Nigel McCook was third with nett 71, after a four way countback with Harry McKerihan, Jimmy Little and Brad Verrills. Richard Spence was third in B Grade with nett 69. Vanessa Murphy won the Women's Medal with nett 75.

Saturday 14th October

Paul Toussaint had a very successful day because his 44 points won him C Grade and Score of the Day and he partnered with Chris Mitchell, who himself had 40 points and won third place in A Grade, to take out the 2ball Multiplier. They were a hot group because another of their playing partners, Jack Sloman had 41 points and came third in C Grade. They were the last group to finish so you have to feel for Harry Maynes who looked home for both C Grade and Score of the Day with his 43 points but had to settle for second.

Matt Savage was the A Grade winner with 41 points and Shane Parsons beat Chris Mitchell in a countback for the runner-up spot.

Kevin Macmillan won B Grade with 39 points, one ahead of a group of 6 but Keith Masterton and Pete Munro filled the other places, after the countback.

Vanessa Murphy backed up her Medal win from the previous week and again won the Women's comp with 38 points.

Wednesday winners

Michael McNee won A Grade and Score of the Day on Wednesday 4th with 41 points, with Andrew Frith beating Don Brown, after a countback for second and third - both had 38 points.

Andrew's 38 though was enough to see him win the Vince Horan Memorial Trophy against the monthly qualifiers from the previous year. Congratulations Frithy Junior!

Ken Compton was the B Grade winner with 40 points, one ahead of Mitch Cleary who beat Alan Dean, on a countback for second.

Warwick Akhurst took out C Grade, also with 40 points with Brian Cronan (39)  beating Chris Sparkes on a countback, which also included David Moss and John Cranfield.

Greg Black and Peter Nicholls beat Ross Kocass and Stewart Nettleton on a countback in the 4BBB after both pairings finished with 47 points.

Chun-Ta Wu won Scratch with 1 over par.

Steve Buchan won B Grade and Score of the Day last Wednesday with 42 points and also teamed up with Brian Cronan for 50 points to win the 4BBB.

41 points was the winning score in both A Grade and C Grade with John Williams and Peter West achieving that respectively. John and his partner John Briscoe also finished runners-up in the 4BBB (48 points).

A countback settled the other places in A Grade with Jamie Duff beating Geoff Osborne, after both finished with 40 points.

In B Grade, Michael Bowyer was runner-up with 38 points while Martin Bowyer was third with 37.

Doug Moult was runner-up in C Grade with 39, one ahead of Peter Stephenson and Gary Martinolli with Peter winning the countback for third.

Jimmy Knox was the Scratch winner with 1 over.

Bunker update

We're on the home stretch!!

Work has started on the 11th hole, which only leaves us the 12th, 13th, 15th greenside and 17th to go and weather permitting, we are expecting to finish around the first week of December.

Earlier this week, we shortened the 9th to a par 3 to protect the Team working on both the left hand side of the 11th and the new fairway bunker on the 9th. That bunker was not included in Craig Parry's original plan but he always knew he needed to do something to make it a tougher par 5 for the longer hitters and so discussions continued with a view to implementing his idea when finalised and when we completed the rest of the work on the 9th.

Sand went into the left-hand bunker on the 10th on Monday and we will Klingstone and fill the remainder of the right-hand bunker when we complete the construction work on the 11th.

Thank you

It has been an honour and a privilege to be your Captain for the last four years - it's even been very enjoyable...most of the time!!

This will be my final Newsletter as Captain so please forgive my self-indulgence while I thank a few people.

Whether it was COVID, the rain that just kept falling, or more recently, the bunker plan, I have enjoyed an incredible working relationship with Pete, Kurt and all of the Course Team and I now have a far greater appreciation for the work that they do daily to present our fantastic course the way they do.

In Ben, I have had a great sounding board and I have truly appreciated his input when I've started any of my many sentences with "what if?" or "what do you think?". His guidance certainly helped me be the best Captain that I could be.

The Golf Committee that I have had the good fortune to Chair has had many Members and I thank them all for their contribution. I would like to mention my Vice-Captain for three of the four years, Cam Gillespie who, amongst other things, stepped in to cover the prize presentations on a Wednesday or Saturday when I couldn't make it.

The next exciting chapter of our Professional services will come to fruition in early 2024 but I want to thank all of the Teed Up Team that have assisted me with timesheets, results, representative team uniforms, Chippers and everything else over the last four years.

Finally and most importantly, I would like to thank you, the Members.

I have often said that we have a great golf course but it is the Members that make Long Reef a great Golf Club.

Nobody seems to be able to remember when a Captain was previously elected by the Members so I will always be grateful for the fact that you elected me twice.

My role was to serve you and your best interests and in doing so, I promised to be open and honest with you and encouraged two-way communication and I have appreciated all of your feedback, whether it was supportive or not - it shows you care.

All I can say is that I gave it my best shot for you.

 Doug Campbell | Captain

Rules with George | Question

Question: Alf was playing a match. His ball was in a bunker on the 13 th hole. When it was his turn to play he was very careful not to cause his  ball to move. He found that his ball was lying in a slight depression in the sand before he played his stroke. After addressing his ball carefully as he made his backswing for the stroke he lightly brushed the sand behind the ball with his club. He completed the stroke and got the ball safely onto the green. He said to his opponent Joe, "It was not really possible to complete the stroke without touching the sand just behind the ball".

As a result of his action, which applies?

A) No penalty for Alf - touching the sand was accidental  and not made with the intention of testing the sand.

B)  Alf gets one stroke penalty.

C)  Alf gets two strokes penalty.

D)  Alf gets the General Penalty of Loss of Hole.

Graham Philip Mars Crofts (known as Peter)

LRGC Captain 1956

It is rare that information you have been seeking for years walks through the Club House door! Peter Crofts is one of two Captains who are not honoured with a photo on the Captain's Collage, but now we know just what this important Captain looked like! His son Phillip telephoned the Club to say he was to visit Sydney from Coffs Harbour and asked if would we like two photos of his father!

During an interview with Phillip I was able to learn something about Peter, as he was known, and his time as a Captain and share the information we had. So as we prepare for an election let's look at the Club's 9th Captain of nearly 67 years ago.

club image

Left: Peter Crofts receives a trophy and the prize of a tea set in the 1950s.

Peter joined the club, an experienced golfer, soon after moving to Dee Why in June 1951. He  had grown up in Gordon, a member of a large sport loving family. Two of his brothers were also very keen golfers. One was a member of Avondale and was a Club Champion. The other a member of Pymble where he claimed the title of the lowest left handed marker in the district! As the story goes Peter was playing golf on the day that son Phillip was born.

Peter was born at the end of the First World War in 1919 and served in the second. He was sent overseas to Libya  and the Middle East, part of what was to become known as the Desert Rat's legend. His battalion  was brought back to help defend Australia in 1942. He was then stationed in the Northern Territory where his role was to co-ordinate the railways. He  was in the army as was one other brother, two others served in the Air force so they had their own Returned Servicemen's inter forces golf match every year for years. Peter was a Captain at the Club when the AIF days would have been so important and well supported with members from both wars taking part.

Peter's name can be found on the Services Cup (1939-45) Honour Board as the winner for 1952 and 1956.

Peter had trained as a Quality Surveyor but had various jobs mainly as a salesperson. In the Membership books, he is described as both a Sales Manager and a Manufacturer's Representative.  By the 50s he had joined Tim Payne, also a club member, in a sports equipment business. This involved travelling and selling all over the State. One of the regular destinations was the Sports Shop and Golf Pro Shop at Goulburn. They became good friends with Sports Shop owner Reg Mayo and as they were all keen golfers Reg would invite them to play. This they did on several visits. On one occasion Reg invited them to include any other friends from Long Reef who would like to play one weekend.

As is recorded in the Goulburn Golf Club History, in early 1955 Peter, Tim and a group that included then Captain Wally Smith, Charlie de Lepervanche and Andy Edgar played a friendly match against Goulburn, in Goulburn. During the weekend arrangements were made to create reciprocal rights and later that year a Goulburn team came up to Long Reef. In 1956 30 players returned to Goulburn and that was the beginning of the Goulburn Weekends with all the tall stories and antics that are still being told and acted out today! Peter and Tim started it all!

Peter was already on the Long Reef Club Committee by this stage. Two years after joining the Club he served  on it in 1953 and 1954 in a general position. Ernest Medland Payne, Tim, joined him  there in 1954 and took his place on the committee 8 times over the next 11 years. The men were great mates and colleagues and as happened in those days Peter's children knew him as Uncle Tim! Peter was a fair single figure golfer in his own right with a handicap hovering around 5 in the 50s. Phillip who caddied for his father remembers  the larger than life stories of Keith Miller and Sid Barnes. He also remembers those well told tales of golf bags being thrown off the cliff on the then 14th (now 16th) by disgruntled golfers at a time when the course had no boundaries and the beach was in play. He remembers his Dad doing particularly well on the then 8th as his albatross hole. They may have been 3 or 4 apparently on that very hole, probably a short par 5 then, but he never had a Hole-in -one. At some stage Peter was also a member of The Australian Golf Club. This was a corporate membership.

Peter followed Wally Smith as Captain in 1956. The Bowling Green  was in full use by older male members. The new Club House build was half-way through and in 1956 the second phase was announced. Peter was there to see the printing of the first newsletter in 1956 which kept the members and Associates informed of progress. In 1957 a category of Social membership was revised. On the course in 1956 new piping was added to serve the southern and south west holes. 1957 was a very dry year leading to hand watering at night. In his two years as Captain Peter was to welcome a new President to the Associates Committee, Mrs P. Murray, following Annis Soutar's long reign of 16 years! 1957 saw the first win  of the Associates Championship of Dulcie Fouracre our all-time multiple female winner. She had broken a run of wins by Ruby Watts who had won 5 times in the previous 7 years.

In 1957 a suggestion made to the club committee the previous year by the Associates committee to hold a Mixed Foursomes Championship was approved and included in the Programme with Captain Crofts support. Peter would have presented the prize to the first winners, multiple singles Club Champion winners of the previous year Des Lofthouse and Ruby Watts.

In 1959  Peter left the Club and Dee Why for a home in the Shire, but was never happy there so he returned to live at Beacon Hill and returned to the Club in 1962 . He remained a member until 1966 when he moved north with his job -something to do with razor blades!

Thanks are extended to both Phillip and  his family for thinking of getting the photos back to the club. They seem very happy knowing that we appreciate the photos and that the club will remember Peter and acknowledge his contribution to the Club.

Two other pieces of memorabilia have been added to the Archives since the last newsletter.

Archive Committee member Les Browne was asked by the granddaughter of the late Jack Macqueen to help sort out his paperwork. Les found an article written by Vic Cropper (former LR Captain),  in one of his regular contributions to the Manly Daily, describing Jack's achievements as a golfer and administrator. He was also a member of Long Reef. More of this story can be told another time.

Thanks also go the a friend of the Archives, Ross Bockman who kindly donated his Senior Championship 2021 shirt, the 100th Birthday year  prize. The T-shirt shows the birthday logo and will be kept alongside other memorabilia of that year as well as Ross' Australia Representative Shirt.

Thanks are extended to all three gentlemen, Phillip, Les and Ross for their help.

Answer:  D is correct. Alf loses the 13th hole.

  • In the area right in front or right behind the ball

Penalty for a breach of Rule 12.2 is the General Penalty of 2 strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play.
