Carter Harris won the C Grade Medal and Score of the Day with nett 66, beating Josh Dowse by one. Gary Martinolli took out third place in C Grade, beating Denis Watchorn on a countback, after they both finished with nett 68.
Nett 68 was the winning score for the Medal winners in both A Grade and B Grade - Nick Hutchison won A Grade while Malcolm Weir beat Angus McPhee on a countback to win B Grade. Colm Galloway was runner-up in A Grade with nett 69, while Nigel McCook was third with nett 71, after a four way countback with Harry McKerihan, Jimmy Little and Brad Verrills. Richard Spence was third in B Grade with nett 69. Vanessa Murphy won the Women's Medal with nett 75.
Saturday 14th October
Paul Toussaint had a very successful day because his 44 points won him C Grade and Score of the Day and he partnered with Chris Mitchell, who himself had 40 points and won third place in A Grade, to take out the 2ball Multiplier. They were a hot group because another of their playing partners, Jack Sloman had 41 points and came third in C Grade. They were the last group to finish so you have to feel for Harry Maynes who looked home for both C Grade and Score of the Day with his 43 points but had to settle for second.
Matt Savage was the A Grade winner with 41 points and Shane Parsons beat Chris Mitchell in a countback for the runner-up spot.
Kevin Macmillan won B Grade with 39 points, one ahead of a group of 6 but Keith Masterton and Pete Munro filled the other places, after the countback.
Vanessa Murphy backed up her Medal win from the previous week and again won the Women's comp with 38 points.
Wednesday winners
Michael McNee won A Grade and Score of the Day on Wednesday 4th with 41 points, with Andrew Frith beating Don Brown, after a countback for second and third - both had 38 points.
Andrew's 38 though was enough to see him win the Vince Horan Memorial Trophy against the monthly qualifiers from the previous year. Congratulations Frithy Junior!
Ken Compton was the B Grade winner with 40 points, one ahead of Mitch Cleary who beat Alan Dean, on a countback for second.
Warwick Akhurst took out C Grade, also with 40 points with Brian Cronan (39) beating Chris Sparkes on a countback, which also included David Moss and John Cranfield.
Greg Black and Peter Nicholls beat Ross Kocass and Stewart Nettleton on a countback in the 4BBB after both pairings finished with 47 points.
Chun-Ta Wu won Scratch with 1 over par.
Steve Buchan won B Grade and Score of the Day last Wednesday with 42 points and also teamed up with Brian Cronan for 50 points to win the 4BBB.
41 points was the winning score in both A Grade and C Grade with John Williams and Peter West achieving that respectively. John and his partner John Briscoe also finished runners-up in the 4BBB (48 points).
A countback settled the other places in A Grade with Jamie Duff beating Geoff Osborne, after both finished with 40 points.
In B Grade, Michael Bowyer was runner-up with 38 points while Martin Bowyer was third with 37.
Doug Moult was runner-up in C Grade with 39, one ahead of Peter Stephenson and Gary Martinolli with Peter winning the countback for third.
Jimmy Knox was the Scratch winner with 1 over.
Bunker update
We're on the home stretch!!
Work has started on the 11th hole, which only leaves us the 12th, 13th, 15th greenside and 17th to go and weather permitting, we are expecting to finish around the first week of December.
Earlier this week, we shortened the 9th to a par 3 to protect the Team working on both the left hand side of the 11th and the new fairway bunker on the 9th. That bunker was not included in Craig Parry's original plan but he always knew he needed to do something to make it a tougher par 5 for the longer hitters and so discussions continued with a view to implementing his idea when finalised and when we completed the rest of the work on the 9th.
Sand went into the left-hand bunker on the 10th on Monday and we will Klingstone and fill the remainder of the right-hand bunker when we complete the construction work on the 11th.
Thank you
It has been an honour and a privilege to be your Captain for the last four years - it's even been very enjoyable...most of the time!!
This will be my final Newsletter as Captain so please forgive my self-indulgence while I thank a few people.
Whether it was COVID, the rain that just kept falling, or more recently, the bunker plan, I have enjoyed an incredible working relationship with Pete, Kurt and all of the Course Team and I now have a far greater appreciation for the work that they do daily to present our fantastic course the way they do.
In Ben, I have had a great sounding board and I have truly appreciated his input when I've started any of my many sentences with "what if?" or "what do you think?". His guidance certainly helped me be the best Captain that I could be.
The Golf Committee that I have had the good fortune to Chair has had many Members and I thank them all for their contribution. I would like to mention my Vice-Captain for three of the four years, Cam Gillespie who, amongst other things, stepped in to cover the prize presentations on a Wednesday or Saturday when I couldn't make it.
The next exciting chapter of our Professional services will come to fruition in early 2024 but I want to thank all of the Teed Up Team that have assisted me with timesheets, results, representative team uniforms, Chippers and everything else over the last four years.
Finally and most importantly, I would like to thank you, the Members.
I have often said that we have a great golf course but it is the Members that make Long Reef a great Golf Club.
Nobody seems to be able to remember when a Captain was previously elected by the Members so I will always be grateful for the fact that you elected me twice.
My role was to serve you and your best interests and in doing so, I promised to be open and honest with you and encouraged two-way communication and I have appreciated all of your feedback, whether it was supportive or not - it shows you care.
All I can say is that I gave it my best shot for you.
